So I set that vocal chain up, record it into logic, do I then start eq’ing and adding compression again in logic or do I just carve out the unwanted frequencies in logic once I’ve printed that vocal chain? I watched your other video explaining equalisation but I’m trying to figure out the process for doing it all start to finish
@homestudioacademy Жыл бұрын
Great question! If you record with Apollo Console App using the REC mode (meaning the plugins were recorded), then I would just use a Deesser and EQ to take out the harsh frequencies and then add delay and reverb at the end of the chain. However, I choose to record using the UAD MON Mode in the console app which means the plugins don’t get printed. This way I can make changes after the fact in Logic Pro. In which case, my chain would look something like this: 610B Preamp DeEsser Subtractive EQ 1176 Compressor LA2A Compressor Pultec EQ Delay (if applicable) Reverb But of course, nothing is set in stone and there is no “right” way to do it. Find the workflow that sounds good to you. This is just what has worked for me. Hope that helps you! 😊

For now, I just need a basic hook up with my Rane Pre/EQ, compressor & mixer. I'd really appreciate your advice on a the hook up (listed below), so I can use my Apollo & external gear together for now? For Example: Until I get into the console & plugins ... 1. Can't I just go from my external Rane pre to my ext compressor and then into Apollo's front Hi Z Input and still get a good signal and, just plug my L & R mixer outputs right into the 2 TRS inputs in the rear of the Apollo? And, until I get my rack mount dell computer set up (with quicker USB inputs made just for the Apollo USB Twin) ... 2. Can't I at least get an audio signal from the Apollo's L & R Outputs and plug them right into my current desktop computer? BTW, Do you know if the Apollo TRS inputs & front High Z inputs 'bypass the Apollo's mic pre? Some say yes, others say now. Thank You for your time & what you think? And also for your great video. I'm sure it's going to help me finally get this thing turned on! ha!

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful 😊 Once you download the Console App from Universal Audio's official website and get familiar with it, I think you'll be recording completely in the box more often. But to answer your questions: 1. Here is a youtube video from another creator who shows how to connect external gear such as an external preamp and a compressor to the Apollo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGq1p6J9fraIhrM Also, here is direct link to Universal Audio's official website explaining in more detail how to use Inserts on the Apollo: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/206780533-Using-Hardware-Inserts-with-Apollo-Twin 2. I don't think you can bypass the Apollo built in preamps using the High Z input on the front or the TRS cables on the back. You can however bypass the Universal Audio plugins by selecting the UAD MON mode. Just keep in mind, if you add a UAD plugin on the preamp section (Such as the 610B preamp) then it will still get printed. Hope it helps! 😊

I don’t really ever have any issues setting the gain levels. I try to stay with the meter hitting between -18db to -10db (green or peaking at yellow). When I use the 610B preamp I use the tube all the way up and then use the level knob to control the output level.

Im recording dry vocals from my twin x in (UAD monitor mode) and then adding all my UA plugins after in the daw. Compressors,eqs,etc. Im not that impressed with the sound. Do you recommend recording with some compressors or eq already on it and printing it in the daw?

Hi brother do you mean UAD MONITORING and UAD RECORD Option have different fonctionality ? one Will not give your vocals the plugin's color and send it to your DAW?
@homestudioacademy Жыл бұрын
Right. UAD record means you’ll hear the plugins in real time and they get printed into your DAW. Therefore, you can’t undo anything after the fact. UAD monitoring means you can hear the plugins in your headphones but they don’t get printed. Which means you can then add them in your DAW and make changes afterwards.

Hey Zain Malik, so there is no 1073 in this chain. I used a 610B preamp, 1176 Compressor and LA2A. The Console App gives you both options (UAD Record and UAD Monitoring). If you want to commit to the sound then choose UAD Rec, if you don’t want to commit and make changes later in your DAW, then choose UAD Monitoring. At the end of the day, it’s up to your preference.

You need to make sure you click on the 48v switch (also known as phantom power) on the Apollo because the NT1 is a condenser mic and it requires it to turn on. The SM7B is a dynamic mic which does not require phantom power.

I have a question thats hard to explain, but im hoping you can help. Im deciding on a Twin X USB so heres my question: Essentially im curious if theres a way to record a take, (monitor via console with FX) clean into my daw, and then if i decide i want to use that take but WITH the UAD plugins i was monitoring, if I can somehow run it back into console, to then print that take with the UAD chain enabled into my daw, without having to re- record a whole new take. That way I can monitor my vocal while recording (with FX), and then after its in my daw CLEAN with no FX, I can then decide if id want to use the UAD chain, without having to committ to that sound/take before knowing, also preventing me from having to record a whole separate take. Not sure if that makes sense, but if so id appreciate your thoughts. Thanks man!
@homestudioacademy Жыл бұрын
Yes, so just record using the UAD monitoring mode in the console app. This way you’ll be able to hear the plugins but they won’t be printed. Then, just go into your DAW and just add the plugins back with the same exact settings from the console app.

The point of using UA Monitoring mode is that it gives you the ability to make changes in post. For example: if you use the LA2A and you over compress, it will print that way and you can’t undo that.
