Thank you for putting these videos out. I feel like after watching them I can practise so many new techniques and be better at things I wasn't as good at before. If I may add my own observations to the things you say, as a person who took classical singing classes the thing I found to be the main factor to why people have trouble first getting a grip on breathing and tone placement and then the power of their voice is the shyness. I feared my voice for a very long time and I hated it, it took first this magical moment of really feeling the voice be in the right place "up in my head" that I started to slowly open up and not be afraid to be loud and put all of the power in there. There is a reason behind people who love to perform being quicker to learn and improve their siging abilities. I guess that would be my piece of advice to everyone who is just as shy but wants to learn to sing even if just for themselves, don't be afraid to really use that voice of yours. Start where no one can hear you, then sing with and for your friends, get drunk in a karaoke bar, once you realise you are really actually doing this for yourself because the music brings you joy, just let it flow out of you. That's the magic to feel.

Just want to say i've been struggling for a long time to semi self teach myself to sing. I've always had near perfect pitch matching but my tone has been terrible. And from going through loads of youtube videos I had sort of come to a dead end, trying to get support with a good tone and resonance. For some reason this video made a breakthrough for me, I can easily find where the resonance is with hmmming the n sound. Then turn it into a neee and i still got it. It's a consistent thing I can do to get on the right track. I also think I'm feeling what support should feel like. Just wanted to say thanks a lot!

So I am a soprano, which I've intuitively known, sometimes people said I'm an alto, because I can go lower, but I'm definitely comfortable singing higher and can belt higher. This was great! Thank you for this video!!
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes color has more of an effect on our range. For example, in men, many ranges share the same low end but their vocal color (dark to bright) will determine the limits of the high end and how high they can belt is a much greater indicator of voice type. True altos cannot belt super high, maybe C above middle C max. I can sometimes get to the D in belt voice and I am 100% a contralto. A brighter voice can carry the belt sound higher. Note that you could be a mezzo-soprano as well (between alto and soprano) but with a brighter color. Dark to bright colors exist in both Mezzo and Soprano ranges. Contraltos only come in one vocal color (Dark). Also be aware that the brighter the voice the less audible difference there is between belting and mixed voices. In super bright voices, the belt voice is much thinner than mine, for example.
@arxsyn6 жыл бұрын
VoiceHacks I envy the contralto sound. Their dark colouring, and the fantastic power in their voice, if they choose to wield it is astonishing. They can carry chest voice higher up in placement than other voice types--therefore in belting, their sound is all at once full, dark, weighty and LARGE. I mean HUUUUGE! Now tell me, who doesn't want that? If you can belt in pure chest at C5 you really are something very special. Timi Yuro I'm looking at you! Other vocal types' voices would just hurt and maybe break their voices if they tried. It's also cool that some low contraltos can sing into the baritone tessitura. Seriously, how low can they go? I think I'm just a Mezzo. Sigh. it's not exactly dark. I know l can go down to say least Bb2. But the majority of my voice is very warm and smoky. Typical lyric Contraltos don't necessarily all necessarily sound and androgynous. They may still sound feminine, but still very rich, warm and dark at the same time. Like caramel and chocolate. Still others sound "inky" like blue-black.

Definitely checking out your other videos because I’m singing some very challenging material now and need all the help I can get some days! I've studied classical singing since I was 16, and I got into musician program later, I quit tho and haven't really had any singing classes in 7 years*. People have just like, said "yeah I think you are a soprano". I think my tone is close to Tarja Turunen or I guess I've tried to sing like her. I've always thought I just can't sing pop songs really well(belting high), that maybe I'm just not a pop singer or non-classical. I did this exercise and I think I belt from C3(barely, Cis sounds more like a sound, like I could probably actually sing something like Evanescense-Going Under lowest note D) to D5(kinda much on the limit there), I guess it would kinda make sense if I'm an alto since I'm really not sure how many notes after C6 I can get to. F6 doesn't seem doable really at this point. But yea... shocking :o

@QuincyKane7 жыл бұрын
I'm currently working on this and the breathing exercise you shared in video #4. How often should I practice for these techniques to be effective? (It's difficult for me to find time, but I'll try my best to reach the minimum requirement).
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
Great question! My basic guideline is shorter time increments over more days, if that makes sense. So, it's more effective to rehearse 20-30 mins/4 days a week than 2 hours 1 or 2 days a week. Think of it in an athletic sense like going to the gym. Progress will depend on your own personal availability. But shorter bursts also allow muscle memory to build over time and prevent injury when we're early on learning and are more prone to making mistakes.

when you say to put the sound forward....... Then what should i feel at the back of my throat???
@voicehacks8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Good Question...so, while our larynx is inside our wind pipe/trachea/throat - we can't think about directly using something or feeling something in the throat. You need to literally imagine in your mind that all of your sounds are going forward. Watch my video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baHEnnZ5l7SssLM This will relax the throat and send the sound in the right direction to alleviate tension. You shouldn't really feel anything in the back of your throat. It should be relaxed during this exercise. Use AIR to power the sound. Breathe deeply before singing and relax the throat.
@GauravBanerjee3107998 жыл бұрын
VoiceHacks ok... got it....but i am just a little confused...between the tone placement...and the resonance placement.....can you explain this..please??
@voicehacks8 жыл бұрын
Tone Placement means imagining the direction in which all of your notes or sound will be traveling. Your tone placement determines the style that comes out when you sing. Rock vs Opera for example. Watch the video link I put above it will explain it more clearly. Resonance is where the notes vibrate in your body. So, regardless of tone placement, ALL low notes will resonate/vibrate in the chest, ALL high notes will resonate/vibrate in the face/sinuses/head. So even if I am using a forward tone placement, I will feel the vibrations in my chest if the notes are low. I will feel the vibrations in my face if the notes are high. But imagining the sound going forward and sending the sound forward is what makes it sound like "Rock" singing and what gives me control over the sound. If I am an opera singer, I am imagining all of my notes going up through the top of my head. But if they are low notes, I will still feel them vibrate in my chest, if they are high notes I will still feel them vibrate in my face, regardless of the style I am singing or the picture in my mind. The pictures will give you control and change the style of singing. But resonance is related to physics of sound and the pitches of the notes. I hope this helps.

my nose is vibrating too much is that a problem?
@voicehacks8 жыл бұрын
Abdul Malak It should be vibrating a LOT in this exercise. So, allow that to happen! The sensation. is less on the singing vowels, as opposed tot the humming where we feel it a lot. But as singers, we have to get used to allowing those sensations and vibrations because that is are natural sonic resonance. When we sing with good breath support and our larynx is in the neutral position, out sonic resonance will be very promenant when we sing. This is a good thing :)

Hi Mary, this vid is awesome and I can feel my sound starting to zoom forward. But my nose gets congested most of the time when I do this exercise. Is that supposed to happen? I've read all the comments and didn't see this question so any tips you can give in this would be great. Thanks!
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
Marie B Thanks for watching! Glad it's helping you! I am not sure why this exercise would cause congestion. You're actually the first to mention it, but singing in a dry environment if you live in the northern hemisphere this time of year, all kinds of sinus and nasal irritation can happen. I haven't known this exercise to cause that effect before. So, I am guessing it's either an environmental or health reason -allergies, dry air etc. One thing that might help would be to inhale through the nose when you take a breath for this exercise. Normally I wouldn't want you guys to breathe in through the nose. You should breathe in through he mouth when you are on stage/in the Studio. But for an exercise you can use nose inhale as a tool to maybe open the sinus passages and relax the tissues in there. This sometimes helps my students feel like their resonators and sinuses are clearer. Only inhale through the nose and only for exercises. Follow the rest of the instructions in the exercise about not exhaling through the nose much. Thank you!

Thanks for the videos! I have one question: is the articulation of the "n" inn this exercises similar to the "ng" with the back part of the tongue stretching upward and the tip of the down?
@voicehacks2 жыл бұрын
Great question! You can do occluded exercises on NG or ING sounds however this is not one of those. I have done those before with folks in lessons, but in THIS particular exercise it should be a non-nasally plain NNNNN with resonance that vibrate the face like humming on N instead of M. The only specific thing we need here is a glottal onset at the beginning of the N. It’s the same kind of hard sound you would do with single vowels or words that start with a vowel. The word “I” for example is a glottal vowel with that hard onset. That hard onset here is crucial to the position of the cords in this exercise (though it’s ugly sounding) and then after the glottal hard N onset we just do a nice resonant hum on regular N, no G or ING in this case. Thanks for watching! Hope that helps!
@laurabordigoni67526 жыл бұрын
I didn't expected I surprised myself!!! But I'm not the coulorata soprano that's too hight
@armnakornthab68677 жыл бұрын
Get confused. NN is kinda nasal sound. If air cannot come out of nose, I should be able to sing this while pinching my nose to block the air. But if I block my nose, I cannot sing NN at all.
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
Good question. I've answered this a few times in the comments on this page and I hope to clarify again. First, the sound I'm making with the NNN is NOT nasal. A truly "nasal" sound (like the "steve urkel" speaking voice) is not resonant and sounds "nasal" because the larynx is really high which causes the soft palate to drag and the sonic/sound wave resonance to disappear. When you plug your nose to "block the air" you're actually blocking the resonant space for the sound wave. Remember, in physics of sound, that sound waves need air to travel through or liquid. Ideally, they're heard best when traveling through air. If I pinch my nose in this exercise, I can't perform it correctly because it involves a lot of sound wave vibration and now I've cut off two tubes of vibration space. When we do this exercise correctly the sound wave resonance in our sinuses is VERY strong and should move some of the natural air present in our nasal cavities (even if we're not exhaling through them, there's still air there, just like the atmosphere all around us). If you plug the resonant spaces, you can't get your resonance or do this exercise. You aren't exhaling through the nose necessarily if your nose isn't plugged. You should NOT do this exercise with a plugged nose. Just like, if you had a sinus infection, your sinuses would be clogged and now your resonance and sonic resonator spaces are gone. You can't breathe out of your sinuses during that time but sound is still attempting to resonate there and it can't due to the blockage, hence why someone sounds like they have a cold or a stuffy nose. Just like sound holes in a guitar, you don't breathe out of them or send air through them in any way but if you plugged the hole, you'd cut off all the resonance and lose the sound of that guitar. If you put your hand near the sound hole of a stringed instrument you will also feel air moving due to the sound wave movement in the resonant space, though air isn't being blown through. So, in this exercise, leave the sinuses and nose OPEN for your sound hole resonator space but do not exhale through the nose. You can do both. I do it in the video. Good luck!

hi how do you sing with compressin I have somes songs on youtube I wont to know if iam singing with compressin
@arosonomy5 жыл бұрын
Where was the compression? This helped with some tone, but how exactly does this apply to using the glottal muscle to compress and push out more sound with less air? I might be terribly confused, but I haven't been able to really understand head, mixed and chest voice as no matter what note I am singing- my everything vibrates due to keeping my soft pallet raised and support in my chest. Sincerely, a guy who wants to sing a little higher but not have it sound like falsetto.
@voicehacks5 жыл бұрын
I think it's your understanding of vocal compression that's the missing link here, not the exercise. When you strengthen your internal vocal fold muscles you'll get proper pressure along the surface of the cords, creating a bigger sound with less effort and strain. You still need to work up to this and work hard at it. It's not like one exercise will magically make that happen for a vocalist. It's muscular strength that needs to be worked on over time, repeatedly. Glottal sounds put your vocal cords in the ideal position for strengthening and then we're holding it there as best we can following the glottal. Over time and practice, you'll get a stronger tone and a stronger voice. I hope that clears things up.
@arosonomy5 жыл бұрын
@@voicehacks It does actually, thank you. Apologies if that came out off. This had been my biggest frustration with singing. I ended up doing this exercise throughout the day and what I found is I still push out too much air, and that I need to project the sound through the nose more. I think it's happening, but the muscle isn't quite there yet. On occasion I'll hit a note without going into falsetto, and then get sad because I can't do it again- or I'll get it but it won't have the hint of "fry" we all want. Practice practice practice!

I find that if I cover the roof of mouth behind the teeth "completely" with the tongue, there is no way for ANY air to escape other than through the nose. So I have to only cover the teeth partially correct? Or are you able to completely (or mostly) block all the air giving you the maximum compression?
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
Good question! You don't need to cover the roof of the mouth completely with the tongue. Just say your natural "N" consonant in a spoken voice. Note how the tip of the tongue hits the roof of the mouth and back of the teeth a little bit. That's all that should be touching. Just enough to make a natural "NNN" sound. The rest of the tongue will naturally touch the teeth on the sides and create the correct sound. You don't have to consciously try to hard. Just keep it simple and say "NN' and it will work naturally.

Please, show me how you say any nnnn sound without any air coming out your nose.

Don’t overthink it! Just say Nnnn the typical way you would and it will work. I just don’t want people to do an airy “HN” type of sound. I am not sure why people love to overthink this video. It’s just a singing video and there are far more important things to worry about or overthink in the world. If the exercise is helpful, great. If not, don’t do it. That easy.

Hey Mary thanks for the video! I am a little confused on two things. The first one being that when I do the N sound, air seems to still a scape from my nose no matter what I do. But when doing the Nee sound, it seems like no air escapes from my nose and I have a lot of power. Am I doing something wrong? My second question is, I was able to belt the entire range with power and not moving to any other type of voice, except for the last few top notes. Is this any indication that I am doing something wrong?

HI! The answer to this question is in the pinned reply to arm nakornthab at the top of the comments here. So please and thanks, read my reply about the air. :) If you're able to belt comfortably to the top of your range, that's a good thing! That's the goal here.

is this supposed to have the same volume and feel as speaking the entire time? or is it a sign that you're pushing higher than you should be if, say, once you get into your second octave you find yourself needing more volume as you go higher? thank you!
@voicehacks4 жыл бұрын
Yes! It will likely get louder as you get higher just try not to push it too too loud to where it feels painful or anything
@judeviscera35754 жыл бұрын
@@voicehacks thank you so much for the response! and that's a relief! i haven't found it painful. in fact, i had been getting really frustrated with the exercise and with the whole 'forward placement' concept because no matter what i tried, i couldn't get my low notes any lower to perhaps fit a different voice type than i thought i was, but i couldn't get as high as my voice type should have been getting either! but then i decided to try and let my voice get louder instead of consciously keeping it at calm speaking level and suddenly the notes i was struggling for felt easy and just overall it felt like i had finally learned what that forward placement was supposed to feel like. but the next thought that popped into my head was "this is not what i've been doing, i should see if this new thing is right before i make a habit of it." so that's where my question came from. and i know this is a rambling comment. i'm just really excited and your videos have been very helpful! thanks again! :)

If you can also answer this I will be very much appreciated. For the exercise here I should not use my falsetto, should I? I am a baritone but I can go MUCH higher than what was suggested here (I can go to A5 with falsetto NN, but G4-A4 with my chest NN. You told us around 15:20 to drop about E4-F4.)
@voicehacks7 жыл бұрын
You are correct, this exercise is meant to be done in a non-falsetto range, in our belt/forward tone placement. So, for my exercises on KZbin, I tend to be a bit conservative with note ranges just to prevent injury, excess strain etc. when a person is trying these alone without direct guidance and supervision. However, Baritones can usually sing in full belt to the A4 as you mentioned. Generally, I regard the A4 you mentioned as the highest belt note for baritones. But I don't want my brand new baritones just thinking they can shoot up to their highest belt note with ease. Our high belt range needs careful skill and stability so, that is another reason I am conservative with the vocal ranges in videos. If we go to high (even in our vocal cord range) before we have the technical ability to match the notes, a lot of screaming and yelling occurs and I want to be extra careful. If the A4 comes easy to you without strain, absolutely sing it, but if you're straining, I don't advise it. Additionally, our mouth is closed during this exercise which would (obviously) inhibit our note range. Usually it's much more difficult to get to the ends of the range on an NNN so that's the other reason for cutting the range short a couple of notes early. I want to avoid pushing or straining in any of my exercises where people are unsupervised. But yes, A4 is a normal top belt note for a baritone.

VoiceHacks Excellent detailed clarification. I am a bit concerned regarding you saying A4 is highest belt for baritones. (I fear vocal damage) As far as I know, I can do some mixed voice higher than A4 until D5, after D5 it looks like I have to use falsetto alone. Thus, I thought I can belt til D5. Am I understanding this incorrectly? A4 is my highest chest and I normally can sing to this note without belting....(I am not even sure whether I have belted already as I am quite new with the belt thing.). Thank you very much!

i dont "flip" or i dont feel like i flip at all, but i can drag my voice all the way up even tho it starts to sound like a wierd reinforced headvoice or something even tho it seams to be connected? i have no idea tbh haha but my voice becomes automaticly louder (even tho i put same amount of effort). Male btw. am i doing it wrong or is it just that my voice has learned to automaticly transition into headvoice instead of maybe stretching the mix range, im out of clues tbh.

So, I know this video has been around for a while, and you probably won't see this, but I thought I should ask. I found out about some people's disability to fully compress due to disalignment or weakness of the vocal folds. Now, ever since I've first watched this video a long time ago, I still feel the same problem when trying to attempt it. I feel a rather strong itchy or even scratchy sensation on the back of my throat, especially during the NEE. Is there something wrong or am I just applying too much pressure on my vocal folds?
@voicehacks5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I can't really assess that online and also I'm truly not qualified to assess whether the vocal fold weakness is permanent or not. Only an ENT or qualified Laryngologist can make that assessment. I will say it's been my experience that most folks with mild paresis (weakness where the cord still moves somewhat) we can work those compression muscles and get back some strength. An ENT can tell you if with therapy the movement can be improved or not. But speech therapists use glottal sounds to do the same thing for folks to restrengthen the cords. Personally I have a weak right cord and these help quite a bit, not completely solving everything I do have to work compression exercises regularly. So, I would say see an ENT to see if there's anything else wrong like a callous, node, polyp preventing the full cord closure and if the mild weakness can be overcome via therapeutic exercises. I would definitely always consult an ENT if something doesn't feel right.

WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN? DAMN KZbin. they always recommend 2pacs really a robot or angelina is really a man videos all the time, then they try and slip something useful past me by only showing it once. some top notch tech you're working with in between commercials. Damn nice to find your channel Mary, although I haven't watched anything yet, so you better live up to my first impression of your videos title?
