He's a touch more sympathetic in the book. I won't give too much away, but in the book something devastating happens near the end that's left out of the movie, making Andy's choice to leave Paris a lot more high stakes, and she handles it in a pretty hard to forgive way. So you can understand his reasoning for not wanting to be with her anymore. Andy is a touch less likable and checks out a lot more so in the book than in the movie. Also, if I remember right, they don't get back together.

On the first day of filming, Meryl Streep told Anne Hathaway, "I think you're perfect for the role. I'm so happy we're going to be working together." Then she paused and followed it up with, "That's the last nice thing I'll say to you." And it was.

"Endearing"? You're kidding. She made fun of Andy to her face, never had anything nice or supporting to say about her, and was (all--in-all) a bitch. I found it funny watching this and thinking that anyone with a backbone would take this kind of treatment. As for Miranda, I would have given my left, uh, arm to have worked for her. I might have not lasted the day but the first time she threw her crap on my desk for me to hang up and/or put away, she would have worn the stuff the rest of the day.

Yeah, my style is not really feminine but I love fashion because it does have a surprising effect on a lot of society. We shouldn’t judge what people wear, but the decision to wear certain things does show a bit about the person’s personality and how they make choices. Ex: Someone wearing bright colors that don’t match is more focused on being more appealing to themselves than caring about how society sees them. Or person who definitely planned their outfit to looked casual actually does care about what others see them and want to give off a specific vibe.

It really highlights our lack of choice thanks to large cooperations. If we all had the money we'd could have quality bespoke clothes made or tailored for us, but because most of us aren't that wealthy, our choices are generally op shops and fast fashion.

And what makes this film worse was that in the book, Andy breaks up with her boyfriend amicably in the end. The film tries to show that 'oh if you prioritize your career over these relationships you'll end up like the bitter Miranda' but somehow it gave double standards with how Nate's pissed because Andy isn't there whenever he wants her to be. Instead of trying to be supportive and understanding, he's more of an immature child who can't understand the concept of trying to meet your partner halfway because they have their own goals in life and both could compromise to make a relationship work. If you can't do that, break up!

There's a point in showing Andy's relationship with Nate (the boyfriend) and her friends falling apart. It is simply what happens to many people as they "grow up" and figure themselves out. - Honestly, Andy is no longer the girl he fell in love with and who fell in love with him. And not many of the friends you had at 20 will be around when you're 40. It doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with either of them. But them having their little talk in the end was just unnecessary. You have broken up, so just move on. And personally I kinda do understand the boyfriend. While I want to be supportive, I would have a hard time dealing with my partner breaking almost every promise made to me. I guess I'm just not the kind of person, who can be with someone with that kind of job. - But I hope that I would be able to soldier though a year, even though somewhere in the back of my mind, I would worry that it wouldn't stop - ever.

Chick flicks need more love and respect from the general public honestly, there are some fantastic films that doesn't get talked about enough, especially this one.

I get what you guys are saying about this being a 1 year gig for Andy but the thing is once you get in that mindset of “I have to do this, I have to prioritise it above all else” it’s incredibly hard to ever escape it and move on. I genuinely don’t think Andy would have left after the year ended and I’m not saying that this is a bad thing as long as it is actually her choice that she made after being honest with herself whether this is her new dream or not and she just enjoys the challenge. However, I don’t think staying would have been healthy for her if she continued to feel like everything is out of her control and that she “had no choice” like she was thinking (or at the very least saying) for the majority of the movie Still I completely agree that her friends should have been more supportive or at the very least tried to have an honest conversation about their worries instead of guilt tripping her while barely making any effort to understand the changes she’s gone through or recognise her new qualities (such as her newfound drive to excel)

I disagree with the idea that she wouldn't have left. She lost her friends and her boyfriend, so no ties or influence from them, and still chose to walk away based on a moral dissonance. @@daddybendover69 But I think losing her connection to people close to her was a precursor to realizing the sacrifices that job / industry requires. Regardless of their "support" or not, when you're alone, a career isn't going to sustain you. It's never, ever ever going to be the essence that keeps you sane, happy, and fulfilled. Very rarely do people get to have "careers". There was never a guarantee that Andy would leave, or be successful in another industry.

I truly think Andy could have gone very far in that industry - she’s the type of people who learn fast and have drive. She literally blew Emily out of the water in mere months, going from negative 100 to 1000. Miranda rewards this type of energy and she only complimented Nigel and Andy. The shows portrayed Andy with still some idealism and I believe this is her first job which may be why she reacted impulsively and quit that way. Realistically though, you don’t quit because a higher up who makes 100Ks more than you got bumped for a job. You focus and get the max of what you can do. I would have sticker for a good 3 years to get that rock solid resume, publish a bunch of articles on fashion to flex her muscles, build her rep and bounce to the NYTs. Under a strategic boss, you learn strategy. I learned this by watching all these kung fu movies and also by working under several incompetent or mean bosses.

When I first started the movie I thought that working for Runway was about the connection with the upper-class society that will open a lot of doors for Andrea, but by the end of the movie, I realized the reason behind the saying "working for Miranda for a year and you can work for anyone" that they kept repeating was about work ethics: you must find solutions for every task given to you, there's only plan A, and never take "no" for an answer. That's why other companies will be more likely to hire Andrea after Runway. And that stays true for Anna Wintour's Vogue magazine as well.

Emily is more relatable than Andrea, at least to me. She's working at a job she loves that makes her crazy, and has to deal with a brand new co worker that clearly doesn't want to be there but makes an impression on the boss because of that. That's a very relatable position to be in.

Emily's pal is played by the supermodel Gisele Bundchen. In the original script, Miranda said, "Everyone wants to be _me."_ It was decided the line should rope Andie in to make her reaction more about her own decisions, instead of about Miranda being a monster. Love this film, your reaction was great to watch! :)

You two are really great, honestly. There are two of you and you have pretty significant discussions while watching, but you manage to not miss things, including small nuances. I seriously applaud your ability to pick up what the movie means to show & also maybe things the movie unintentionally shows. You have a knack for seeing the characters/situations as mostly as gray (not black & white). Plus, you always call out characters the movie maybe wants you to sympathize with but are actually kinda toxic. You also don't often have a bias against something just because you can't relate directly; you find a way to relate. I just wanted to brag for y'all~~~^.^

Does anyone think those two belts were identical and everyone else was too afraid to speak up? She lucked out with the Harry Potter book, but she should have cheated, printed off a bunch of fan fiction. The twins wouldn’t know the difference. The apartment in Friends belonged to one of their grandmothers, and it was rent controlled, meaning rent was frozen at where it was in the 1940’s (50s? 60s?) or whenever they first got the apartment. If they sold it to someone else, then rent could be raised.
@ElleKayGee

Those belts were the same color but not identical. It’s like saying a red circle and a red square are identical. We were supposed to think everyone else is delusional and she was right, but it was the opposite.
@chrissmith6097
@chrissmith6097 4 жыл бұрын
@@ElleKayGee since they were talking about shades of blue, that’s what I’m referring to being identical. But if you want to get pedantic about it, they didn’t have a different pattern and we couldn’t see the buckles, so they were both the same belt fabrics of the same color.

@themoviebud1988 4 жыл бұрын
I agree about the Harry Potter book, that makes sense haha. And the rent control thing also makes sense cause I’ve heard of people in NY with that exact situation. The belt tho, I thought the buckles were what differentiates them so I was definitely confused about the colour discussion? But, yeah, they definitely showed the buckles - Sam
@ElleKayGee
@ElleKayGee 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrissmith6097 Yes the color is the same, but since that is the case the only determining factor is the shape/buckle otherwise there would be no choice. I believe the purpose of the scene is to show the difference in perspective from those in fashion and someone who doesn’t care about it. Someone who doesn’t care only sees the color, while the rest were looking at the whole belt (despite the color discussion).
@chrissmith6097

@@themoviebud1988 (looks harder). Ok. One belt buckle matches the fabric and the other kinda blends with the yellow diamonds on the girl’s shirt. I had to zoom in on a picture to really see that though. (Zooming in I also see the one on the left is slightly wider and possibly a shade lighter). I still maintain it would be hard for Andi to see that from across the room. I had an all utilities paid rent controlled studio apartment in Los Angeles for a couple years. It wasn’t the best apartment but I liked living there.

Hearing you call out the boyfriend, the friends, the way we're supposed to pit the fashionistas against the "regular" girls, honestly the fact that y'all are doing this movie at all is kind of healing. We have come a lot farther in 15 years than it feels sometimes. I still have my own scars and baggage from the kind of stuff I internalized back then that I am not going to air out on a forum like youtube, but I just wanted to say that your perspectives had an impact on me, and not just the ones from this commentary either. It makes me feel like the struggle not to normalize things that are unacceptable will be worth it in the end. 💖 thanks a bunch for being you

The only time I didn't like the boyfriend is when they broke up and he said how she didn't like her job and didn't seem supportive... He was annoyed at the birthday thing because she didn't say she'd be late, she just left him hanging, I'd be really annoyed if my partner didn't communicate that they wouldn't be there either. Also when he said I liked your old clothes I didn't take it as a negative I saw it just as I like you no matter what.

Some people say that Stanley Tucci's character is based on Andre Leon Talley, who worked at Vogue with Anna Wintour for 20+ years. I read his autobiography and it would make sense even though Andre said the movie got some things wrong (of course its just a film but the woman who wrote the book did work as Anna's assistant).
