Hey, lessons!
In this lesson, we learn what REDUCED ADJECTIVE CLAUSES are, and how to reduce them to adjective phrases.
What is a reduced adjective clause?
A reduced adjective clause is an adjective phrase formed out of an adjective clause. It is a shorter, more precise version of an adjective clause.
Examples of reduced adjective clauses:
Adjective clause: The person who is singing on the stage is my friend.
Reduced adjective clause: The person singing on the stage is my friend.
Adjective clause: It is a beautiful book that is written by S.N. Sharma.
Reduced adjective clause: It is a beautiful book written by S.N. Sharma.
Adjective clause: The guy that lives with you is my sister’s boyfriend.
Reduced adjective clause: The guy living with you is my sister’s boyfriend.
Adjective clause: I can’t think of a fight that is as good as this one.
Reduced adjective clause: I can’t think of a fight as good as this one.
Adjective clause: Could you please pass me the bottle that is colored red.
Reduced adjective clause: Could you please pass me the bottle colored red.
Adjective clause: Do you know the guy who is sitting on your car?

1. Let's bring someone whom you care about. (Can't be reduced) 2. Could you check the bottle under your seat? (changed to prepositional phrase) 3. The man bringing food to your home is very generous. ( doesn't look necessary to reduce it because people having limited know of English grammar won't be able to under it or as you said we should use a time marker with it. Like daily, sometimes etc ) 4. If you know a man brilliant at this, call him. (Changed to adjective phrase) 5. Tell me the place where you live. Can't be changed)

Hi sir, Hope you are fine.. As you mentioned in example The property which is being sold is expensive. What if there was "The property which was being sold is expensive". If we reduce it we get the same sentence that is "The property being sold is expensive". How should we consider the information about the property. Should we consider is being or was being.???

Regards. Would you mind explaining why in the sentence "everyone who is in the management are talking about the workers who are under your leadership" the to be verb "is" was used after the word "who" in the first part and "are" after the word "management?" Why "are" was used in the sentence "everyone in the management are talking about the workers under your leadership?" because as far as I know the to be verb "is" is used after the word "everyone" but in this case "are" was used. Let's look at the following sentence. Working hard, Ram will definitely succeed. I think the sentence could have two meanings. 1.There is a condition that if Ram works hard , he will definitely succeed. 2.Ram is someone who works hard and he will succeed.This is a reduced form. How it's reduced is here, Ram, who works hard, will definitely succeed. =Ram, working hard, will definitely succeed. =Working hard, Ram will definitely succeed. (We often place the participle phrase at the beginning) Is my concept correct? I'm so confused. Please help me out. If my explanation is correct, which meaning is to choose? 1 or 2 ?

I wouldn't disagree with you. These meanings can be interpreted from the given structure.
@sahillaskar9039

@@EnglishWithAshish So I can say this is ambiguous. Actually this is because of the commas that are put in non restrictive clauses. If the sentences I've given were restrictive ones, it wouldn't be ambiguous. We place the participle phrase from middle to the beginning only for non restrictive clauses and that makes those ambiguous. I think so. Don't you ?
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 2 жыл бұрын
No. Here, you used a tense that complicates the meaning. It generally is used with the Simple Past tense.

Hi Teacher Ashish Sharma! It`s an awesome video lesson. The explanations are concise, clear, and understandable. The lesson is detailed in chronological order. This makes it very interesting and helpful. Great! Good job! Here is my homework: 1. can't be reduced 2. Could you check the bottle under your seat? 3. The man bringing food to your home is very generous. 4. If you know a man brilliant at this, call him. 5. can't be reduced I would be pleased if you could make a lesson about Reduced Noun Clauses. I`m very confused on this topic. Please and thank you. Best Wishes, Fazil

Thank you for the kind words, Fazil! Hearing from you after a long time. Your answers are correct! Great job! 👏 I don't think noun clauses can be reduced. I'll still check its possibility.

Hello brother i hope you will be fine I have a doubt, as you mentioned that if a adjective clause starts with 'when' we can't change it but there is a sentence like' i saw him when he was dancing' We can convert it like 'i saw him dancing'
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 3 жыл бұрын
It's not an adjective clause; it's an adverb clause here. The adjective clause referring to time is followed by the noun TIME.

Hi ..could you plzz clear my doubt.. How to reduce this ?? Who has/have/had + V3 (perfect) If the sentence doesn't have (after) in (perfect tense) can we reduce this? As i have seen all the sentences of perfect tense with the word after.
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 3 жыл бұрын
Structure wise, we can. But it won't give clarity about the right time of the action. So, we should rather use an adjective clause here.

You're welcome. There's a lot of videos on advanced English. Don't reduce it to a phrase as it's a non-essential adjective clause.

@@EnglishWithAshish sorry , you dont get what I am asking . (Felt offended ) past participle how you form it I mean how you reduced it past participle phrase from adjiective clause? censor board that felt offended ( past indefinite ) should it not be reduced to Feeling offended ? Why you reduced it to felt offended Sir also I don't undrstand why you used past participle (offended) as object beacuse we use regular noun , pronun or gerund for object .
