I have seen so many different doctors after my breast cancer diagnosis. I'm in my first week of radiation therapy, after the first day my radiation therapy started the pain returned. I was miserable also my breast was very red before the radiation therapy starded. I was told I wouldn't feel anything from the radiation therapy, except for being tired. after the third week!!! Thank you for this video, I was starting to think I was crazy.

I FOUND THIS VIDEO WONDERFUL. I WISH THAT IN CANADA WHERE I LIVE THAT BOTH OUR SURGEONS AND OUR RADIOLOGY ONCOLOGISTS WOULD ADVISE PATIENTS LONG BEFORE THEIR SURGERIES AND RADIATION, IN PARTICULAR ABUT THE POSSIBILITY OF THE FIBROSIS. I AM ALMOST COMPLETELY UNABLE TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE DUE TO, NOT ONLY THE PAIN AT THE TIME I AM IN PHYSICAL MOTION BUT DUE TO THE NUMBER OF DAYS THAT THE PAIN IS EVEN WORSE AFTER I HAVE DONE ANY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY THAT MOVES MY UNDERARM, BREAST OR RIB CAGE. IT IS ACTUALLY MUCH WORSE IN THE EVENING AFTER ANY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND THE NEXT DAY THAN IT IS WHILE I AM MOVING AROUND. ALONG WITH LIGHTNING BOLTS AND STABBING PAIN WHILE I MOVE THE NEXT DAY IT FEELS LIKE MY RIBS HAVE BEEN HIT BY A SLEDGE HAMMER. SO THAT AS I SIT UP OR LIE DOWN IT IS EXCRUCIATING. IF I RAISE MY ARM, THE DAY AFTER ANY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SUCH AS JUST WEEDING A SMALL PATCH OF GARDEN THE PAIN THAT I HAVE JUST DESCRIBED WENT ON FOR 21 DAYS, ALMOST CAUSING ME TO CANCEL A VACATION THAT WE HAD BEEN PLANNING FOR MONTHS. I AM MAKING THIS COMMENT BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THE MOBIDERM THAT YOU RECOMMENDED IN YOUR VIDEO COULD REALLY HELP ME BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE AVAILABLE IN CANADA. I TRIED TO ORDER IT FROM THE AUSTRALIAN WEB SITE BUT THEY ONLY SEEM TO SHIP WITHIN AUSTRALIA. CAN YOU DIRECT ME TO A COUNTRY THAT WILL SHIP INTERNATIONALLY, PLEASE ?

After my lumpectomy , because tissue had been “moved around” , I had a lumpy area . When scar healed I decided to massage my breast to see if I could disperse the lumps a bit. It was with surprise that I found lumps did reduce .... now I have just finished radiation... so thank you for this information... I’m feeling a slight pain along the side of my breast on ribs... will wait to see if I get very much burn on my skin ... at present still have Mepitel in place , recommended to leave it on for a few weeks by radiology nurse.. I will massage again when breast has recovered!

Hi Yael, thank you very much for your comment. Have you had the seroma aspirated (drained?). I believe seromas can still cause chronic breast pain (although some Health Professionals would disagree with this). I would discuss aspiration under ultrasound guidance as I have had a number of patients who have had seromas drained for successful pain relief. Jen

@@TheBreastCancerPhysio Thank you so much for your reply. I have not had it aspirated as my surgeon thinks it would get infected. She feels that the fluid will go back into my body and be disolved. Had lumpectomy and Radio Theraphy last Dec. and my armpit is so burn and experiencing excrutiating shooting pains and the Breast nurse is saying these are normal side effects of Radiotheraphy instead of looking into the real concern. So please your help and advise will be highly appreciated. Love all your videos by d way. Thanks

Hi Carolyn, I always tend to use the big blocks of Mobiderm. Sometimes we use the small blocks for a more subtle appearance under shirts if women are going out. Hope this helps! Jen x

Hi Kary, you should be safe to use Mobiderm up until skin changes (redness, burns, skin irritation etc) start to occur due to Radiation. I assume you're using it on surgical scarring or areas of fluid retention following surgery? Jen

The fact that she could state that inverted hairs cause Orange Peel type of skin on the breast and it's quite common scares me because that's the first sign of breast cancer or cancer coming back a recurrent cancer in the same breast as orange peel skin, and and a statement like this to really deter a woman of thinking it's not cancer, when the first signs of cancer is Orange Peel looking breast a lump or nipple oozing or a plain old rupture ulcer eyes type of injury on the breast
@TheBreastCancerPhysio Жыл бұрын
Hi Trudy, thanks for your comment. Good point - it is a sign of breast cancer. Peau d'orange is also very common following radiation treatment and when patients present with this symptom they will often assume cancer has come back. Health Professionals should always scan patients if there is any suspicion of cancer. Patients should also ask their Medical Professionals if they're unsure.

can this massage be used after radiation treatments start, but before the skin is too sensitive to touch? I'm experiencing breast pain from my first 2 treatments and am interested in massaging. Thanks.
@TheBreastCancerPhysio Жыл бұрын
Hi Karyn, if you're experiencing pain within the first 2 treatments it is most likely something other than radiation fibrosis, such as a skin reaction to the radiation. I would discuss this with your Oncologist prior to performing any massage. Hi Trudy, lymphatic massage can assist when breast swelling is part of the problem. But if the breast is painful and or tight due to scarring from radiation then scar tissue massage I find is most helpful.

Hi Jen, Your video is so interesting and educational! However, I am a bit confused:in Hungary where I had my surgery it is totally forbidden to do any massage on the body -and especially on the part of your body where the tumor was removed- to be sure to not spread cancer cells all over trough the lymphatic system.(they suggest to avoid massage for 2-3 years after surgery) This might be a completely outdated view I really don't know just would like to be sure I am not making more harm with massage...
@TheBreastCancerPhysio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Szilvia! Thank you so much for your question. Avoiding massage is definitely an outdated concept. I massage breast tissue / chest wall / shoulders / necks / scars etc on all of my Breast Cancer patients. The blood flow stimulated during massage is probably similar to walking or having a hot shower, which we don't usually tell people to avoid. Hope this helps! Jen x

@@TheBreastCancerPhysio Hi Jen, Thank you so much for your quick answer,I really appreciate it! If you have time, could you please guide me on where to find new research results on the matter? (I mean the overall concept of massage on cancer patients)Each article I found in Hungarian is almost forbidding whole-body massage or being very cautious and allow it on the face or limb. Also, that is the point of view on personal consultations with oncologists.

What has been done for those on the extreme rare cases of radiation fibrosis scarring? My mother has been dealing with this after her cancer and radiation treatment and it makes me so frustrated and sad that I have to watch her go through this with seemingly no treatment. She's pretty much done everything under the sun and nothing is working. I am looking for any support groups or resources on how to treat this so she can have some sort of quality of life back.

What's the difference between pulmonary fibrosis from radiation to the left breast as to breast fibrosis from radiation so how come there's a cure for the breast fibrosis and not pulmonary fibrosis from the breast???
@TheBreastCancerPhysio Жыл бұрын
Hi Trudy, sorry for my slow reply. Pulmonary fibrosis is scarring on the lung tissue itself. Breast radiation Fibrosis is scarring on the skin and superficial lymphatics of the breast. There are no cures for either condition. I hope this information is helpful. Jen

Okay most people I know cannot stand to have any hand on their breasts and breast massaging how will this deplete the scarring underneath and also I can't even wear a bra it's suffocates me and the indentation it's just ridiculous because I think I'm lung disease I want to know the difference between radiation fibrosis and pulmonary fibrosis because I happen to have plural thickening plural scarring actually with scarring and then thickening way before my breast radiation but seated a PET scan in October 22 radiation fibrosis to the radiation. Really!?
@TrudyContos-gq1bw Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this, but is radiation fibrosis any different than pulmonary fibrosis? And if there's no difference in pulmonary and radiation fibrosis and that means it's really like a death sentence or is it never going to spread but obviously if this is progressing after radiation 2 years I'm assuming it's the same thing as pulmonary fibrosis but now there is an actual fault that we all signed a letter that stated we will well informed when which they never inform you this they just rush you into radiation sign here and of course they all say oh none of my patients had a side effect this is ridiculous.
@TheBreastCancerPhysio Жыл бұрын
Hi Trudy, pulmonary fibrosis is different from radiation Fibrosis. I've answered your question in another comment reply. It is true that most women treated with radiation do not get informed about the long term side effects of radiation, which is devastating. Radiation Fibrosis is not lethal but can heavily impact quality of life.

Lightening bolt yes, or just plain gross feeling that makes you hesitant to touch your own breast and we know we have to do that constantly for new masses lumps etc. But I have spoken to so many people and sometimes it actually feels like somebody grabbed your boob it's just gross feelings that's so much pain the bolts will make you grasp because you're like him I having a heart attack specially because you get the radiation on your left side and your left breast it's right there in your heart but why am I feeling it after I biopsy on my right side now I don't know what led to the edema but it's ridiculous is it the radiation and it just took a couple of lymph nodes out. I didn't take an astrosol because I have lung disease I have macular holes in my eyes in an ostrichol is a researched done clear data on it it causes traction on the retina, so I could only contribute the pain the odd irritating feeling constantly on the boob the lightning bolts have not stopped and it's been 3 years since my lumpectomy and it'll be 3 years in October since my radiation and only creeped up it creeps up on you.
