The flame king is rated for reuse and the normal one pound cylinders are not. The normal bottles are not designed for the stress of filling, using, then refilling. People have been killed (burned to death) using a refilled cylinder.

"Disposable cylinders" are single use, and the other person is correct, bcuz: 1) The valve is not designed for repeated use. 2) They lack an overfill protection device. 3) Metal walls are too thin - - subject to fatigue and rupture. Save a few buck, but risk losing your face? No thanks.

And I found out that refilling them is illegal in my Province anyway (for good reason, obviously, as you implied). Here’s the deal. The flame king ones are by far the safest option. But lets all cool down over the traditional/ old school green bottles being refilled. It’s been done forever. I have millions of views with thousands of comments and I see this thrown around every day. No one has ever been able to show someone being hurt while using this product. With that said, if you can spend the $100 to outfit yourself with the flame king kit, that’s the way to go and those are the only bottles I refill these days.

Quick tip i learn from welding and tourching... Only open the valve on the 20# alittle so in the case of an emergency you can quickly turn the tank off

Also prevents freezing of the fittings from the gas, which can cause them to clog/not work and it's a complaint people have with them and that's the solution, slow tf down, lol. At least that's the suggestion on the ones superior to this, with a valve in between. They are cool, they have a safety feature that prevents you from overfilling, unlike this thing he's using and they are only $10 more expensive on Amazon, than this thing. Someone was having trouble with their's and the answer was to not open it all the way, as that can freeze and clog them. The person answering said to only open it up part way and that should work. No reason to be cranking it on full or anywhere near that, despite the claims of Mike and false comparisons to other gasses, lol. Common sense should tell a person that just the sheer difference in size of the two, is enough to go slow, but common sense ain't so common. lol. So yeah, that's a great tip.

@@stevenradke5920 Indeed! If people have been killed just refilling a PCP rifle, a 1lb tank will kill or maim as readily as any larger pressure vessel. Those tanks are smaller than a 1lb propane tank, so you are completely correct that the size doesn't matter. It's a pressure vessel, they are just inherently dangerous and should be treated with respect and safety, to the letter. I've heard some crazy stories about exploding pressure vessels. Big ones too, that are scarier than dynamite and many high explosives. They have built in shrapnel, under extreme pressure, good reason enough to have a healthy fear of them. Even an air compressor shreds when it explodes and it doesn't care in what direction, lol. People/shops/hospitals etc. frequently put them in their own rooms because of that. Preferably cement walled ones. And with how poorly many places maintain them, that's a good thing. Heard some horror stories there too. Like the pile of rust and gunk and water in the bottom from improper drainage, was the only thing preventing it from exploding. The metal was so paper thin it might as well have not even been there.

I do the Schrader valve with small needle nose pliers. And purge the air out of the 1# tank. And when I start to see liquid spray, I release the Schrader valve and then get ready to shut the slave tank off. Timing is important for a good fill, but not over filling. Otherwise, if over filled I set them outside on the porch and the Schrader valve will release what's necessary. Try at your own risk.

There are versions of the adapter that attach to the larger tank using the outer threads (just like a grill attachment) - instead of using the inside/counter-clockwise/reverse threads. I like those because (1) you don't need a wrench and (2) they are less likely to "unscrew" when attaching the 1lb (smaller) bottles for re-filling. But, either version is good - money saver - and can be a life saver.

I filled 22 of those green cylinders from one 20 pound tank. So as I expected I wasn’t getting them 100 percent full A year later I went and checked on my 22 refilled cylinders and 7 of them completely leaked out. So if you fill them you need to use them ASAP or screw them onto something with a shut off valve so they can’t leak

Been doing this for years. Make sure your small cylinder is completely empty. Do the freezer thing. Drop of oil on the threads. Hang the 15lb. tank upside down. Open valve slow and let sit for a few minutes. I always get complete refill by weight. You want to police the used cylinders for rust every year. I do about 30 tanks in the fall. Still scares the shit out of me on every cylinder. Good video.

That's interesting about purging the air. When hooking up the heater to a 20 lb tank, the fellow who represents Mr. Heater Big Buddy for Amazon took 15 minutes to purge the air out of the hose line before he could fire up the heater. A commenter said that he should have raised the heater above the propane tank as the propane is heavier than air so all the air in the line will stay on top of the propane as it pushes towards the heater. That results in a quicker purge than having the heater and tank on the same level and mixing the air and propane and waiting for there to be enough propane concentration to ignite the pilot light. I don't see where there is much you can do when using the two 1 lbs tanks connected directly to the heater.

If you weigh the tanks after filling you will find that the cold tank fills faster and is heavier than the one at room temperature. To get the same amount of liquid gas in the one at room temp you will have to purge gas several times.

You might think about this. 1) weigh a FULL 1 lb cylinder on your kitchen scale. Don’t fill bottles above that weight! Overfull is dangerous. 2) make yourself a cradle to hold the 20 lb cylinder on its side, with the valve over the side of your table, so the 1 lb cylinder is vertical and 3) as someone else has already said, you need to vent the 1 lb using the relief valve.

The overpressure valves (that can be pulled out to purge vapor-gas) tend to FAIL and leak after the can gets old. Probably best to get one of the cans designed to be refillable that have a purge valve built in. Like Flame King sales for about $15. can use over and over and has Purge Valve that can be turned with allen key.

There is a missing step left out, probably for liability reason, a job I had years ago was refilling propane tanks, there is a bleeder valve on the 1lb tank, you’re going to need a pair of curved nose forceps, about a 5” pair , screw on tank with the bleeder valve between(as close as you can get to) 11&1 o’clock position, it gets a little tricky, not much room to work but it’s worth it if you want a full tank, don’t worry you can’t really over fill the tank, this method more based on liquid than gas pressure, just don’t leave them in the sun, ok, fill tank the way he’s showing you, when it done making the transfer sound use the forceps to pull up on the bleeder valve a little, when liquid propane starts come out, stop, that tank is done,

I believe this process is well worth the money , but 2 years ago I purchased the fitting just like you show , from Harbor Freight . I didn’t attempt to refill for several months . When I did use it , I had absolutely no success . I did it exactly like you demonstrated . I threw the brass adapter in my tool box , and about two weeks ago , tried it again . You. Can barely hear the gas going from the 20 bottle to the one pound bottle . After waiting about 5 minutes , I disconnected from the 20 lb bottle and had about 3 oz of gas in the 1 pound bottle . I attempted to do this with a second bottle , same result ! BTW , tried the freezer process before the refill attempt . Pretty disappointed myself . Also in East Texas .

Only use good clean tanks. Use a scale to reach the correct weight (fill level) of each tank, do not do it by guessing or time. Don't pull the relief valve with pliers, it's not designed for repeated use. Use brass caps with rubber washers (Amazon, brass = no sparks), tightly closed on each tank after filling. When I open the cap, I smell to see if there is a significant propane scent. If there is, I discard the tank, as they are a dime a dozen. After they have been refilled even once, store them outdoors protected from weather where Propane cannot collect. A shed or garage that can be mostly closed should not be considered well ventilated. We are used to seeing the small tanks inside buildings, this is complacency to avoid. Propane can even trickle like water down an outdoor slope and collect a long distance from the tanks. Not trying to be safety police here. I do refill my on tanks but use extreme caution. Be a little bit afraid of it. Never get complacent. Treat it like a loaded gun with a hair trigger. Camper next to us exploded from leaking propane. Flash of fire, no residual flames. Family of 4 inside. Tragic. Mom and kids were under blankets so physically unscathed, dad was standing up in boxer shorts which covered the only areas that didn't have the top layer of skin burned off. Hair was solid chunks of char. Couldn't have been more painful to be burned at the stake.

You're not being the safety Police, no, this is needed, pressure vessels (especially with explosive gasses inside) are no joke, man, I agree. Best advice I've ever heard that sums up what you said in 4 stark words, is "don't mess with pressure vessels", lol. And that was from someone who saw big ones explode. And at that scale, it will obliterate anyone near it, but even small ones are highly dangerous. If filling a PCP rifle can kill someone (and has) and these tanks are slightly larger size, then these surely can. It's not necessarily about the size, it's about the pressure/force and shrapnel that's so dangerous about it, the size doesn't matter. Respect ALL pressure vessels. Even air compressors, they are no joke either when they explode. Treat it all like a loaded gun with a hair trigger, indeed, because it is. That's very good advice. So cringe that he had his face right in line with that rocket at one point. Yeesh. I'd be like shielding behind a piece of plywood, lol. That's how uncomfortable I am with this whole idea. But the Flame King kits actually "designed" to refill 1lb tanks and their tanks are thick, have better seals and parts, seem pretty cool and I'd feel safer using them. This is not my cup of tea, those disposable ones were never designed for refilling and are dangerous enough to refill, that in my Canadian Province it's illegal. They even want the adapters banned too. But a Flame King refillable kit would be acceptable, because it meets all the same standards as the larger refillables.

Yes. Purging the tank first is a bonus. Don't pike anything into the valve though. That's just stup I'd. Screw the adaptor onto the one pound bottle instead. It'll push the valve in and purge the tank for you.

Rob B No, and don't mess with that little needle valve near the top of the tank. It may not reseal properly, causing a slight undetectable leak. In a vehicle, or a warm enclosed space, there is the potential for an explosion, injury, death and/ or a fine of $500,000. Only refill them suckers up to where you don't hear a hissing sound. Shut off the big tank valve and disconnect the green tank. Propane is 1.5 times heavier than air, so will settle in lower areas. A spark of any sort will blow up the vapers. ALWAYS fill these green tanks out of doors. Pay attention, my friend. Bob

That's what I mean by not letting an idiot fill those tanks -- they are against the law to refill in the first place. There is absolutely no reason to "purge" these tanks. There is no air in them, just propane vapers. All one is doing is filling them with liquid from a big tank. When the hissing stops, shut off the big tank valve, unscrew the green tank and you are done. Don't be concerned if the tank is not to a full 16 ounces. It's safer that way. If you have to have a full 16, just buy a new tank from the store. Remember, refilling these empty green ones is ILLEGAL. If you wanna be an outlaw, do it safely.

I bought separate 20lb tank and 1lb bottle adapters, then put a valve between them. I usually fill several at a time so the inlin valve makes swapping out bottles easier. I fill for 30min each and get 80%-90% full. When I used an adapter like yours and filled it till it stopped making noise it'd only be about 25%-30% full. I get 6-8hrs on my refills using Mr Heater Little Buddy. I can get 10hrs if I let hem fill 45 min but that wears out the bottle's valves more quickly and you don't want them sitting around that full, espeially if they get warm. 30 min I found to be the sweet spot between function and safety.

That 1 pound tank is not even half full doing that method you need to open the relief valve on the one pound tank by pulling the relief valve until you get liquid fuel coming out, then you will have a full one pound full tank .

For anyone watching this, they tell you to stick the small tanks in the freezer for a reason. It's to minimize the amount of LP that vaporizes when it hits the small tank which has a much lower pressure which being room temperature means the LP has room to expand and turn back into gas lowering the over all capacity of the tank.

@@EastTexasHomestead I've tried multiple variations, testing to see if temperature really makes that big of a difference when filling these tanks. My conclusion: it does not. I've tried every canister temperature variation between frozen, room-temperature, and even 90F+ in full sunlight, being filled from a 20 lb tank that was frozen, room-temperature, or hot in full sunlight, and the difference in end weight is, at best, less than 5%. Given that a full-flame burn on a propane tank will maybe last two hours, we're talking about a maximum of a six minute increase in overall burn time. In theory it makes sense, but in practice, it's not very practical and not worth jumping through those extra hoops, in my opinion. There's also the potential risk of overfilling if the pressure relief valve freeze and locks, especially in canisters that technically weren't constructed with the intent of multiple consumer refills. If I REALLY need more burn time, I'll just grab another canister, or pack a larger tank. One recommendation I would make for those who plan to regularly refill 1 lb canisters: look at buying a high-grade steel canister that is built to DOT refill and transportation specifications. I have three 16.4 oz canisters made by Flame King, that were around $15.00 each on Amazon. They are considerably heavier duty canisters than the Coleman ones (empty Coleman = 390g; empty Flame King = 680g), and the pressure relief valve is built to be filled and refilled hundreds of times. One warning I give is that the dimensions are not the same as the Coleman disposable canisters, most notably that it is 0.25" taller and 74% heavier than Coleman canisters. If you intend on connecting the canister inside a device, such as connecting and swinging them into a buddy heater, I would carefully review dimensions and weight tolerances prior to buying. As I use my 1 lb canisters for camp stoves and lanterns, the height difference and increased weight is a complete non-issue. I've had mine for years, helping me avoid purchasing at least a hundred Coleman ones. Less waste, relatively inexpensive (empty canister and refilling from 20 lb tanks), heavy-duty steel, quality pressure relief valve, and street legal to transport after refilling.

This is a 1lb bottle . You can use a screw driver or needle nose pliers to press down in mouth of bottle , to make sure bottle is completely empty . Then weigh bottle , then fill and then relieve pressure as many times as it takes , till the bottle weighs 1lb more than when completely empty . Other wise the bottle will only be about half full .

Not trying to be safety police here. I do refill my on tanks but use extreme caution. Be a little bit afraid of it. Never get complacent. Treat it like a loaded gun with a hair trigger. Camper next to us exploded from leaking propane. Flash of fire, no residual flames. Family of 4 inside. Tragic. Mom and kids were under blankets so physically unscathed, dad was standing up in boxer shorts which covered the only areas that didn't have the top layer of skin burned off. Hair was solid chunks of char. Couldn't have been more painful to be burned at the stake. Only use good clean tanks. Use a scale to reach the correct weight (fill level) of each tank, do not do it by guessing or time. Don't pull the relief valve with pliers, it's not designed for repeated use. Use brass caps with rubber washers (Amazon, brass = no sparks), tightly closed on each tank after filling. When I open the cap, I smell to see if there is a significant propane scent. If there is, I discard the tank, as they are a dime a dozen. After they have been refilled even once, store them outdoors protected from weather where Propane cannot collect. A shed or garage that can be mostly closed should not be considered well ventilated. We are used to seeing the small tanks inside buildings, this is complacency to avoid. Propane can even trickle like water down an outdoor slope and collect a long distance from the tanks. Pass that around to other refill sites and vids. Better to be safe than roasted.

There's actually a much better one than this that is only about $10 more expensive. And much safer to use too. They are an elbow, with a control valve in between the two tanks, which allow you to fill the small 1lb and it has a safety feature that prevents you from overfilling the 1lb. It's pretty cool and you can find them all over Amazon etc., along with that one you have. So basically you prop the 20lb tank up on a table or whatever, upside down with the elbow down over the edge and just hang the 1lb over the edge while filling and you control it from the valve in between which is facing upward for easy access.

@@EastTexasHomestead Ahh yes, the Flame King refillable kit, has almost the same thing as these elbows with the valve I spoke of. It's actually longer on the Flame King kit than these and I assume that the Flame King refiller is a push handle filler it looks like? As opposed to a red plastic turn knob, like on these shorter elbows I was talking about. But yeah, identical idea really. That Flame King refill kit is smartly designed, I like it. And the bottles are safe and made for refilling. They really hit it out of the park on that one, a legit refilling station, that's actually designed right for refilling from a big tank (unlike dangerous to refill disposable ones). They geared the whole thing around the refilling idea everyone was doing, right down to the stand. Their heater, that is a direct competitor to Mr Heater Buddy heaters, is also good. Unlike the Buddy heaters, their's has a much better thermostat/heat control. And you can hook it up to a 20lb tank, with the same hose/adapter for Mr Heater, so they are compatible. There was a vs. video a guy here on KZbin did. And there was one thing better on the Buddy heater (can't remember what it was, maybe the space to hook up 2 tanks vs. 1?), but the heat control on the Flame King is far superior. It has a set it and forget it, increment capable heat control and thermostat the Buddy does not have. So it will turn the heater on and off and just "keep warm" at a constant temperature, once the room is heated and is very efficient. Much more so than the Buddy, solely because of this. It's also not as bulky as a Buddy heater. I think if I buy one it will be the Flame King heater, it's just as good as the Buddy and sharper looking than the buddy (not like that matters, I don't go by looks, I go by functionality/durability etc.). But it's a bonus if it looks sharp and theirs does.

So you certainly could do one and it would not be "an overdone comparison" like some videos on other things. And he didn't really test/experiment on the video or off camera either, to my knowledge. He just did a basic feature comparison. So you could certainly go more in depth and do like a head to head test or something, like on heat output, performance, efficiency.

People always point this out and to be honest I think it is kind of overkill. I cannot think of any failure mode that would lunch that bottle into your face when opening the valve on the 20 pounder. It just ain't going to happen. The only remote thing that could happen is the bottle fails and that would release propane in any given or all directions. If you think the bottle has the capability of launching like a rocket or something - no.

Many people who've been doing this for years have found that freezing the empty before filling from a room temperature larger tank works best, however: to make sure you get a complete fill, stick the refill into the freezer again for 30 minutes will allow you to get to a full 1lb refill. I word to the wise on using a BBQ tank (20lb) cilynder for MR HEATER BIG BUDDY, use only OEM MR HEATER hose. Aftermarket hoses leech oils into propane and they'll destroy your internal regulator!

I take a digital kitchen scales and fill them by weight. Take a wooden dowel let the pressure off the tank. Fill a little at a time till you do a few. I never fill over 32 ounces just a little over, an empty weighs 13-14 ounces depending on the tank.

This is the scariest thing I have ever seen. First and foremost these 1 pound cylinders are not for refill. They are not designed for the stress that occur during multiple fillings. The internal valve is also not designed for longer term use that occurs for multiple fillings. Not sure I have ever heard of these valves being able to detect pressure and how does this process detect the amount of liquid transferred. Most filling relies on weight fill.

Do you want a fuller foll on these,, see tip below!! I have been doing this for years. I differ from him! I fill tanks when it is 20 below zero out and bring 1 lbers in from the snowbank! And fill as instructions say, however; see my tip below! Here is a tip for everyone. Once you've taken your frozen 1 lb out and filled it from room temp 20 lb, put the 1 lb back in the freezer/ snowbank for 10 more minutes, repeat filling instructions. You should be easily approaching a full 1 lb in your refill!!! It makes a huge difference!!!

Yes, chilling the 1lb'ers before filling does allow you to fill them more. Many of the fill adapters for this, actually say that in their ads on Amazon. Throw them in the freezer before filling and back in before topping off, yeah.

And even the thought of filling pressure vessels makes me nervous, especially topping them off after chilling. But Amazon has a neat adapter on there, superior to this one the guy in the vid. used. It's an elbow with a valve between the big connector for the 20lb tank to a 1lb thread at the other end. And get this, a safety feature that never allows you to overfill a 1lb cylinder. Guess it flips off after a certain pressure or something, pretty cool. I think (and the ad says) it is safer than other methods/adapters. So that kinda puts my mind at more ease and it's not much more expensive than the straight smaller one like his, only $10 more. Worth it for the piece of mind from a nervous beginner. lol.

@@MrBilld75 I live in Northern Minnesota and I am an avid ice fisherman. In my portable ice fishing house I use a Mr. Heater single infrared ceramic heater. 1 lb are much easier to manage the weight if I cannot pull it out with my 4 wheeler. And I use a small propane grill on my boat to make food so getting a good fill is mucho importante' It is so cost effective to refill, but always take care! I knew a guy who would actually smoke while doing this! Needless to say, "we aren't as close" when he is filling tanks! I make sure that everything is good and clean, no rust or bent Schroeder valve. If they leak after filling, it's a waste. Best of luck in your endeavors! We are definitely in trying times. Being prepared is now more of a necessity than ever!

Wear a welding glove and use some needle nose pliers to bleed little vent pin that is on top of small bottle for 10 seconds you will get more volume into your fill bottle.

Personally I've tried it putting the bottles in the freezer and not putting in the freezer, for me I was able to fill the freezer bottles fuller than the non freezer bottles. The bottles I didn't put in the freezer would only fill about half full no matter how long I tried filling it
