Gum arabic is a binder, like a glue, and it is used in making watercolor apint and gouche. Basicly it makes your pigment stick to the paper. Also it makes the color glossier and easier to blend. It makes the ink/paint sit on the top of the paper rather than absorbing so you have more time to blend.

Lindsay, I just subscribed a few months ago and I cannot tell you how thank-ful I am for ALL that you do...Your my go to person when I need something~In going through ALL your you tube video's I just have one question and I mean this as a compliment and in all sincerely...IS there anything YOU DON"T DO? I craft, card make, jewelry craft, and cross stitch and I thought that was a lot..but you do it all..so thank you..I was a Porcelain doll maker for many yrs in the late 80's and 90's and they all won blue ribbons if that means anything, which they don't except to me... but thank you..and I did start a book on the great ideas you've given so I don't throw away things that I can try to fix...so thanks again. :)

For the markers use a tablespoon of glycern and water and a teaspoon of gum arabic if you have it, it makes it more like tim holtz distress markers. put 3 drops in a marker and see how it works in a couple hours. You can add color (dye-based reinker) if you need it. For ink pads use 2 parts glycern to one part water.

I had purchased reinkers, instead of large pads, and clean pads to make ink last. the glycerine tips are Fab! I'm Hoping to see you do a Nuvo water brush video soon.

Thank you! I just found a set of markers that has been lost for at least 5 years. They are fairly dry but I know there is ink in there! I will be using glycerin and water. THANK YOU! I searched for this video after I found them. I know this set has ink. I have tombow markers that were given to me used maybe 8 years ago. I was wondering if I could use my distress and or archival rrinkers in them. At the moment those are the only reinkers I have. My Scan n cut came this week so it will be a while before I am spending on crafts. Outside of adhesive and Cardstock it could be September. THANK YOU!!!!!!

@firechick561

The Poetique markers I bought are mostly dried out so I looked up your recipe to refresh them. But its confusing bc there's a typo & it reads: 1 Teablespoon glycerin , 1 tablespoon water (& 1 tsp gum arabic which is optional). Did you mean 1 Tablespoon glycerin or 1 teaspoon? (Later in the comments you said 2 parts glycerin to 1 part water. Since I need to add some to almost all the 48 markers, should I start with 2 tablespoons glycerin & 1 Tablespoon water? Or double that ratio)?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 жыл бұрын
Actually this was before the real brush pens came out. You can use 10 parts water to 1 part glycerin. The glycerin is really needed on the felt tip brush pens as a lubricant.

This is a UK question really as when I search the internet all the reinker suppliers are in the US: Where do I find reinker inks in anything other than black and red in the UK? (I recently bought red from ebay before I saw your info and knew what I was doing) The instructions for reinking stamp pads rely on gouache in the mix but finding the ink supplies is really difficult. Not an awfully frugal option if I have to import. Thanks Lindsay and anyone else in advance that has some ideas.

I've heard of a store called "the works" from a youtuber in England that sells a kit of watercolor paints for 4 pounds. It comes with white.You can mix the white with the watercolor to make it opaque like gouache and you can use that! The UK boasts some of the finest art supply manufactures in the world (Derwent, Winsdor & Newton) so you should be able to get good stuff domestically.

thefrugalcrafter . Hi Lindsay yes I use the works a lot and have gouache (I also recommend Jacksons for art materials of all kinds and levels with wonderful offers/reductions) . I am a bit confused: do you mean that I can make the ink for the waterbased pens refill as described in the video with gouache? The reason that I was still looking for ink as you say that it is needed for the colour/pigmnet in the mix. If the colour for the water-based pen refill is essentially the same as the dye-based ink pads then I am sorted and very frugally thank you. I am working my way steadily through your videos as I need them so I watched this after the ink pad one.Thanks again, Christine

Question Lindsay, do I have to have the gum arabic? All I have is glycerin
@organicloves
@organicloves 6 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to figure out how to make blender pen ink, no one seems to sell it. I found a recipe that was 2 parts water, 1 part glycerin and 1/4tsp alcohol. It works pretty well but there just seemed to be something missing. The end product didn't have the shine that store bought blender pens have and it also seemed to want to bleed into paper that I previously had no issue with. I tried adding a little more glycerin but it just didn't seem to be the problem, even ended up plugging up one of my water brushes. After just watching this video I believe the gum Arabic may very well be the missing something. I plan on ordering some asap. If I hadn't come across this video I would have just kept tinkering with the glycerin and water, I had already thought to take the alcohol out completely and I'm about 80% happy with the glycerin and water solution as is. I said all of that to say... If your trying to rewet Crayola markers or markers that perform similarly you really don't need the gum Arabic but if you've got higher end water based markers or are trying to make "better" than Crayola type markers the I would try and get the GA. I was using inktense pencils and tombow vs the glycerin+water solution gave markedly different results. However, the glycerin+water solution in a water brush with watercolor pencils worked very nicely. Much better than just water alone. I will never use just water again.

Lindsay. I found a colorbox petal box ink set that's been "lost" for 4+ years. All the pads R hard as a rock!! I haven't thrown it yet cuze I just knew u would let me know if it's salvageable. I have some glycerin and gum arabic but no ink refills in those 8 colors and I don't see those colors available on their website. I've never made my own inks. I have LePlumme II markers I'll try to revive. Didn't know I could refill them but never gave them a toss. I have ink refill for sepia but have lost the marker. Do u know of any brand that have empty markers? I like to use the markers to ink my Art Impression watercolor stamps and sepia color has been discontinued. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

+Pat Cyzauskas if there is ink in there add and equal mix of water and glycerin to a shallow dish and place the pads (not touching) pad side down in the dish and let them soak up the liquid. You only need about 1/4" of liquid. Check after 10 minutes, if you don't see any ink leaking from the pads leave them longer. They need to absorb the moisture and it may loosen the pigment if it s not fully cured. You might have to push the pad into the liquid to soften the pad by just try a gentle soak first.
