Nice. My Magenta cartridge was empty, I did the trick with the wheel and now the printer prints again in color. The good thing is also that the red blinking light is gone and that the printer now goes to sleep as it should do.

This is the best video by far explaining the reset gear. As i am in the usa i purchased from a US supplier who had white gears with a different looking design. I could not find a video with enough details to properly use the white reset gears. Your video helped because it told me exactly where the bottom notch was supposed to be and it told me that there would be a spring action to the gear when you assemble the cover plate. That was the information I desperately needed as cosmetically my gear is completely different.

awesome. This will save me a lot of money. Only an ordinary Philips screw driver is needed. I already bought new toner cartridges before so the the reset wheel and spring is already in them. I could tell by the weight that it is nowhere near empty.

I found this video very helpful :) I did think people might be interested to know this: After receiving the annoying 'replace toner' message, I found that I can keep printing with the in-box cartridges (that came with the printer when I bought it new) - simply by pushing a few buttons on the printer - ultimately making the printer think you've now reset/replaced the cartridge. If you google how to do this, you will find out which buttons exactly (as I can't remember off the top of my head). I did this without needing to remove the end plate or add a reset wheel. Of course, this trick will only work a few times, until the toner runs out. When I first received the 'replace toner' message, I panicked. As a poor student, I couldn't afford to buy new toner at the time. I searched the internet for a solution and watched this video, but was dismayed because I also wasn't in a position to order a reset wheel/refill kit and have it arrive that day. These printers completely refuse to print if they "think" that one of the cartridges need replacing - regardless if your yellow cartridge needs replacing but you only want to print out black text. So, this loophole of resetting the cartridges electronically via the printer's console is a useful trick around Brother's daft decision to design the HL-L8250CDN laser printer this way. Now that I've worked out how to address this issue, I can say that buying this particular printer was an excellent decision. It is quick to print and I am very pleased with the print quality. I have had this printer for 12 months now and do not regret the purchase. As a student, I regularly print journal articles and lecture slides for my studies. Previously I used a colour inkjet printer and was purchasing replacement ink cartridges much too frequently. In the long run, using a laser printer like this is the cheapest option. It is even cheaper than using my university's printers in the library. Using third party refill kits from companies such as U Refill Toner, I imagine the price will be even more affordable. To the creator of this video: I'd be keen on buying one of your refill kits. However, I cannot find any information on your website regarding whether you post to Australia? I see another commenter has recently enquired about the same - hopefully you will read these messages soon!

Sometimes needing to be done 3 or 4 times before it "stuck" and then it didn't give a predictable "after life".Also, our wheel solution will work reliably across the complete family of these printers, whereas no one has ever tested the button-pressing approach on all the printers in the family (to my knowledge)

Awesome - thanks for the video U Refill Toner. Before I found your video, I had already bought a replacement cartridge elsewhere, containing flag wheel (printer is MFC-L8850CDW). Yesterday it ran out (yeah right!) and I used your method to reset the wheel - it's printing again just fine. Hello. I'm trying to figure out the purpose and function of these wheels. First off, I was able to reset my toner warning using just the menu. Does this mean I do not need to purchase wheels? Second, I'm having trouble figuring out how the reset wheel even works. It appears in the initial starting position, the gears don't even touch the other gears next to it. What actuates this mechanism? What does the wheel do when it finally gets turned into a position where the gears are touching? Does it stop the other wheels from turning? In addition to that, it appears that after these reset wheels are installed, they move into a position where they somehow tell the printer that the toner is gone. If so: What tells the printer the ink is gone on a starter cartridge with no wheel? A count? Why don't they just keep using the count? Why use the wheel? And why put a wheel in that can be moved into the 'toner out' position where it needs to be reset? Why not just design a wheel or insert that always tells the printer the toner is full? You're using a printed test sheet to determine toner level anyway. Thanks for your info.

John, if that works for you - and keeps working for you - then you would never need the wheels. But we found the "soft" menu reset patchy and unpredictable at best: and variable from model to model. We needed a commercial solution that will work 100% for everyone, wherever they are in the world. That's why our approach relies on the reset wheels, which exactly mimic the behaviour of Brother's cartridges and therefore will always be successful (if used the right way).

Weigh the cartridge if you can 412g is completely empty. In that case, refilling has a reasonable chance of fixing issues. If the weight is significantly above 412g, then whatever's causing the problem isn't lack of toner: so putting more toner in is not going to help
