Very helpful video, thank you for posting and sharing. My balcony is already stained but chipped in some places, do I have to remove all the old stain, ? is it enough to sand without the intention of removing the old stain, just to open the wood grain to allow absorbent of the new stain?

You should be okay to sand out those small spots and just re-stain where its needed.

will the belt sander take care of/remove old flaky paint?
@GatorFinishing4 жыл бұрын
Yes it should be aggressive enough to remove old paint.

What do you use to remove the stain between the boards in the gaps. Don’t want to use chemicals as the bottom of the deck is over the patio and stained as well. Going from a stain to a natural wood look.

Orbital sander

It would have been nice to see the finished deck.

Or a stain that would show the grain of the wood. If you are going to bring it back to life let it show!

Can you do this all in one day? My terrace is 13x14.
@GatorFinishing4 жыл бұрын
Yes, depending on your stain dry time!

I will never stain or paint again, too labor intensive. This time I am going for just cleaning and sealing, much easier to re-do. I find staining also does not last hardly anytime especially in areas exposed to the sun.

How would you deal with sanding when some of the decks boards are bowing upwards leaving a recess in the middle?
@GatorFinishing4 жыл бұрын
We would recommend replacing any deck boards that are bowing or split.

You’ve got to be kidding me! Using a hand sander to sand your entire deck 3 times? That would take FOREVER! Rent a machine!
@tomn.84752 жыл бұрын
If your boards are really bad, don't rent the big machine. The splintered wood will destroy the pad and sand paper in less than 2 minutes. Plus, that thing is heavy with nobody to help. I'd say if your boards are somewhat nice like in the video, then yeah it's kind of worth it.

Video is good. But disappointing to know this needs way more tools than I thought. not for an average DIYer on budget.
@jvaldiv4 жыл бұрын
Don't really need all those tools. Just a sander and a hose or power washer if you have one. Sand, clean, stain, that's all.

I am in the process of doing my deck. These tools make it MUCH easier. However, you can do it by hand using a sandpaper block or pole sander. It is just very labor intensive. I would suggest you do the best job possible as a poorer job will require the work to be done much sooner as the stain does not penetrate and adhere as well to a poorly prepped surface (I know). I am redoing my deck after less than 3 years because I did know properly know how to prep. Now I'm learning. Good luck!

Great video, what sealant would you suggest?
@mikek46862 жыл бұрын
You meant to say Slotted Screwdriver, not a flat head screwdriver. Flat head is a type of screw. I admire your work effort!

Get a roof over your deck. 99% problem solved. Lol. Thank you for the video

Should I clean the deck before I sand or does it not matter?
@GatorFinishing5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ty, if you can try to power wash the area. The wood fibers of the various components of the deck will raise up and expand with water. After drying, wood fibers can often remain raised and may cause splinters. For this reason, you should plan on sanding your wood deck after power washing and before staining and sealing. Hope this helps!
