If you ever have to tackle a project like this again, for the sanding rent yourself a Clarke floor sander with an 18"x12" base. Essentially covers two full deck boards with each pass. You can use the palm sanders and belt sander to touch up areas after that. Just would save you lots of time. I have a couple of those machines for my deck restoration business up in Ontario, Canada and they are amazing. I always enjoy watching these videos to see how others tackle deck restorations. And of course you gotta love when the random rain shows up outta nowhere. Great transformation.

You can try to flip the deckboards when is no other solution. I do with mine , I took up every single board, flip it ,and screw it back . With the angle cut boards , it's trickier but still possible . Now my deck looks like completely new , and it takes me three days of work ...And I'm speaking about a 10 year old deck , and it's looking really like new.

I'm very glad you shared this video. I was about half-way through the difficult stripping work when I discovered some of my deck's framing was rotten. After tearing up all the boards, re-framing most of the deck, and re-planking it, I was finally ready for surface prep and applying the Penofin. We chose the darker transparent Bark colour to disguise the different types and ages of wood. This product is amazing. It looks gorgeous now. I'm curious to see how it'll stand up, but it HAS to be better than the crap deck stains (really it's brown paint) you get from hardware stores. More lessons learned from this project: Diablo 36-grit sanding belts are the cat's meow for removing old paint; and OxiClean laundry stain remover makes a superior deck cleaner (mix 1 cup to 1 gallon warm water, scrub it onto the wetted deck surface, then rinse off).

Wow, what a lot of work! As far as being splotchy, I would just leave it as long as it's protected. Once you get the furniture on there, nobody pays any attention to it. Great job!

I am on week two of cleaning and sanding the deck. Almost done we have beveled crevices between our boards on the front covered veranda, about 80x10. Stripping down the deck over top layer of stain/paint and second layer of red stain, we discovered knotty cedar. I have another week of work then staining transparent. Back deck larger size,was dull and grey, cleaned and power washed also cedar, needs more cleaning sanding and then will stain it. Lots of work but worth it. Thanks for the video, cheers.

Test the cedar in a small area if you use Penofin. People have had it react badly with cedar an it turns it black.

Hi, my 2 cents on the blackening problem. My deck is Cedar and next summer will be my 3rd re-application of the Penofin Oil (Hickory Semi Transparent) The first year applying it, I followed the directions to a Tee wiping off the excess after 30 minutes. I bought the Rags in a Bag (Torn t-shirts) because the directions specified to Not Use Cloth With A Nap. The first year after I did that, yes my deck boards turned really dark. So, year 2, I didn't have enough of those types of rags and I was in the middle of the job and needed something quick! I grabbed old towels and cut them up. They were terry cloth and had a thick nap, oh well it couldn't be helped at the time. I needed something Now! And ya know, that did the trick.. 2 years later my deck boards look better than the first round. I need to strip the deck down again this year but my boards are still dry when it rains. Terry cloth is the way to go for absorption of excess stain IMO..@@Remodelaholic

Last winter, I did my deck with oil. Drying took very long. So I applied heat gun treatment and the oil soaked in a lot quicker and the surface dried in half day. then I paste waxed it quickly.

I wonder if one of the reasons the deck got splotchy and uneven looking is because the wood wasn’t conditioned before? Wood conditioner makes a huge difference and prevents that exact splotchiness and uneven staining. Just a thought! Love the color and design of the deck for sure!

Getting ready to strip a 12' octagon deck - so dreading it. Cabot Stripper can states to use a "wood brightener" after stripping - can I just use mineral spirits? I will never do all the steps you went through b/c my arms would fall off!

My deck is pressure treated lumber. It is 25 years old. Originally treated with Thompson's water seal. Eventually I went with a semi solid stain, which eventually started to blister and peel. I tried to use stripeeze to remove the remnants of the stain, but was a task that was so time consuming, I gave up. Then, for 5 years, I was a full time care giver to my mother and had no time to even notice I had a deck. So Mom passed in Dec, 2019. I started on the deck this week. Actually manually scrubbing because I don't have a pressure washer. How do I remove the rest of the stain on the spindles on the deck, and eventually, when I do all the hard work as you did, do you recommend oil for a pressure treated deck? I certainly is not as pretty as cedar, but I don't want to get caught in the trap again of that semi transparent stain. Appreciate any advice.

I used two weeks different strippers to strip 16 years different paints and stains go to bare wool. Used transparent clear stain. I will never use any paint or color for my deck.

I feel your pain. My area doesn’t sell oil based stain. Acrylic. My railing is all turned spindles. I can’t get all the old stain off. I could try to rent a sander. What a mess.

Does forget to buy a box of new deck screws and tighten up any warped or loose floorboards. If over a concrete slab seal the slab to prevent moisture causing peeling in the future. I noticed the deck in video has no gaps around sides. Best to have airflow to allow underside dry after rainfall and harsh Winters

Thanks for sharing!! That was a huge undertaking, and a very important lesson learned about wood. It is way better to have a good product to protect the wood from the beginning, and to maintain, rather than having to go through all of the restorative stages that you had to endure. That was definitely a labor of love! Now you can enjoy the feel of nice smooth wood under your bare feet, and enjoy the beautiful glow of the wood. I think you picked an excellent color for the deck, too. Thanks again, and I hope that you got to enjoy that deck for this weekend's 4th of July celebration!

Keep that pressure washer moving at all times, in a sweeping motion, or it will leave marks (all those lines on your deck - you can completely prevent those). And if you need to stop before arriving at the end of a board, lift it up in a gradual sweeping motion.

im working on a 28x16 upper deck that drops via 1 stair to another 16x16 deck. the rails are 2x6x8 with 1/4 lattice. this deck is over 30 yrs old. it was stained with a paint type stain over 12yrs ago. I tried power washing it first. and hardly any paint came off. I switched to a turbo nozzle which did better but roughed up the wood a lil. I was told that Deck scape by Sherwin-Williams. was my answer to get all the old paint/stain off. (but one must use the product called revive after the stripper or wood damage will occur) well 60 bucks later 1 bottle of each. I coated the lower section of the deck (as a test run) with the S W. DECK SCAPE. IT WAS 72 DEGREES OUT. I Rolled it on with a heavy nap paint roller. I let it sit 5 min, then using a scrub brush, I worked the stripper into the deck. I let it sit for 15 min. I used a jet nozzle on my garden hose. to see if the old stain/paint would come flying off (like the you tube videos showed) ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED. OTHER THEN DARKING THE AREAS OF WOOD WHERE PAINT FLAKED OFF MONTHS AGO. I USED THE REVIVE TO NEUTRALIZE THE STRIPPER, WHICH I'M NOT SURE I HAD TO SEE IT DIDN'T DO A DARN THING ANYWAY. IM WONDERING IF I SHOULD JUST RENT A BARREL SANDER, AND GET ALL THE OLD STUFF OFF IN A FEW HOURS, INSTEAD OF MESSING AROUND WITH VARIOUS STRIPPERS, THAT WONT WORK FOR ME. ANYWAY. THE WOOD ON THE DECK IS JUST PRESSURE TREATED 2X6X12 NOTHING SPECIAL. IF YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ID BE VERY GRATEFUL. I KNOW ITS TIME TO REDO THE ENTIRE PLANKING. BUT THE HOUSE IS BEING SOLD IN 2 YRS. Hi, if you haven't used the SW Deckscape stain, I suggest you return it or never buy it. That stuff is terrible! You will have chipped peeling stain within 2 years! I know because I just sanded all of mine off and it was a bear. Sanding is the only way to go sorry to say. Get yourself some 36 grit!

You can rent a drum sander at Home Depot. Ive done over 4,000 decks in the past 30 years. Under the top layer of wood id brand new fibers.

A contractor built my wood deck, but didn't treat it at all. He only painted it white, instead of staining and treating it! It is one year old and already has mold and mildew. I will use the cleaner you recommended to clean it, but how should it protect it if it already has white paint on it? Thank you so much for your help!

I love your video and sorry but I can't stop laughing! I feel your pain with every step you take as i've just gone through the same thing with my deck! Your body language and facial expressions are priceless! Geez I should have filmed myself doing my decks too. Only difference would have been I'm a 65 yo grandmother and in hind sight should have had a cooler of beers at every turn. It was like the movie Ground Hogs Day every morning waking up to the damned deck. First day ...blow the deck. Wash the deck. See that it needs more. Wake up 2nd day....Sand that deck. 60 and 80 grit sand paper was not enough to remove old stain. Wasted 8 hours. Woke up 3rd day stiff as hell.... power wash the effin' deck/let dry over night. Woke up 4th day...damned deck boards are roughed up covered in white chalky crap. 5th day..Rented drum sander weighing 90 pounds. Bad idea for an old lady. Turned it on and off it went smashing boards and gouged the siding. Returned it. 6th day....Sanding 101. Tried sanding 600 sq ft of deck with tiny palm sander. 7th day...continued sanding with tiny palm sander. 8th day....Bought a Porter Cable Belt Sander on Ebay and continued sanding with tiny palm sander until the big boy arrived! 10 days later....Big Boy Porter arrived...the answer to all of my prayers! Day 17, woke up and let Porter begin by tearing off that old stain! Speedways were created on my boards that day with rivers valleys and hills....perfect for the grandkids hot wheel cars! Day18 woke up to continue sanding and the neighbors were looking at me funny. Oh this went on and on and on for weeks! I finally ended up renting a room to a 30 yr. finish carpenter in exchange for labor. As it turned out he was a meth head and screwed up my damned deck so bad I had to have it completely rebuilt. Year two...I was determined to do it right. research said to let the new deck weather for 6 months before staining because the mill glaze would prevent absorption. I did that but let it go for 10 months as it rains 9 months out of the year here. 10 months worth of algae and grime collected and the deck needed pressure washing before I could start. Bought a pressure washer and cleaned. Ahhh, there was the white chaulky crap again...and fur this time! Broke out the sanders again, 'cept Porter had to stay in the closet! The experts said to let the boards dry out for two weeks after pressure washing. i did that too. Finally, I got to pull out the cans of my Penofin oil three days ago and my deck is turning out beautiful. I'm on the last stretch, railings done (both sides), built in benches and tables are done. The last are the floor boards ....and a 10% chance of rain tomorrow. Downpours forecasted in 72 hours. I remembered your video and the look on your face after the first rain....oh you poor thing! I could feel your pain! Should I try to finish today or should I wait?....that is the question. Revisiting your video....has made me laugh with your every sigh! Oh, the damned decks!

@@scottweddell4440 its because for whatever reason Behr exterior products for decks are absolute garbage. Up here where I am in Southern Ontario Canada, with my deck restoration business I see it all the time. I have an amazing supplier for the chemicals to strip and clean decks so I don't and wouldn't ever use the Behr product. What I can say is how many jobs I have had to fix because people use the Behr stain and of course it completely fails within one season. While I am thankful the Behr products are so bad it allows me to operate a business. I wouldn't wish the aftermath of using their products on anybody. It is a lot of work to fix the mess their stains leave when they fail miserably.

Hope you have better luck with that Penofin brand finish. We used the same brand, and it turned a very dark brown, and ended up looking like crap. We might have used the heart redwood color, and maybe it was not the full transparent. We used it to two separate decks, and both turned a dark, almost black color after just a few months. Penofin was the most expensive finish, but it ended up being the worst performer. I’m now using SuperDeck transparent cedar, for a lighter color. We had to pressure wash, and sand the entire deck to get that old Penofin turned dark chocolate color off. I hope your finish doesn’t turn into what ours did.

I have a deck that I am working on. It was treated wood with Thompsons on it. I scrubbed it and pressure washed it. There are a few spots that need a bit more work. The wood grain does not need any sanding though. I do have a few bad spots, what do you fill them in with? One is maybe 6-8in long, maybe 1/2 in deep. Thankfully it is covered with a carpet most of the time. I was going to use some thinned down linseed oil to coat everything. That sound good?

I have the same Ryobi pressure washer. Can you pour the cleaner or acid wash in the reservoir in the Ryobi and spray it on instead of brushing. Then run cleaner thru the sprayer to clean the Ryobi?

You need to let it sit on the wood for ten minutes or more to remove the gray. I would say better not to.

Penofin works on pressure treated lumber, too. Pre-clean with OxiClean solution, sand with 120-grit, then you're good to go.

great job. I would have settled with a good powerwash without the sanding, but I can tell you took pride in your work, plus I'm sure yours came out smooth. I've refurbished and used Penofin before on a deck; great product. No need to worry too much about light rain if that happens during staining, as the oil will naturally repel moisture. Try getting a Deck Brush next time you recoat; you can restain a deck that size in about 2 hours because the brush holds a ton of product.

Thanks for sharing, I am doing my deck now, was planing to use Ready Seal oil but have some concerns. I have a loghome and recently stained it with Woodguard which is oil base and noticed it never completely drys it always seems to be a little wet. I think it is supposed to stay wet to protect the logs. I was wondering if you noticed this with the Oil you used on your deck? If so would that be safe for pets?

Amazing. I am doing the same thing on mine. Clean and on the strip/sand stage. Except the old finish is not coming off as easily P.O. used some kind of real strong paint and is peeling but almost hard as a rock when its actually not peeling so using stripper then sanding. Any update on how its holding up? =D

I ran into the same problem sanding the ancient layers of stain from my deck. I bought sanders galore! Palm sanders, belt sanders...even invested in a professional Porter Cable! Nothing was making the job easier.....until I discovered the sanding pads and sand paper at the tool rental place. Those giant black sheets that go on a drum sander. Man those are only $3 bucks a piece and can be cut into quarter sheets for your palm sanders. Those things are a 36 grit which you cannot buy at the hardware store. You can get 6 quarter sheets out of 1 and they really do the trick. Mikita also sells a 36 grit for the belt sanders but unobtainable for palm held. Get the 36 grit and the stains come off with one pass!

My second year with oil. First year flipped then sanded my con-red boards then oiled. Second year, just cleaned with a mild cleaning solution on a stiff brush then oiled again. It's easy and looks great. One suggestion:. A lot of products are marketed as oil...but are actually water based. The key is to look at the 'cleanup' info on the can - it should say 'cleanup brushes with a solvent'. If it reads 'cleanup with soap and water' look elsewhere. (I live in a tough environment for decks and our local lumber yard refuses to even stock the water based stuff.)

No wonder you have to sand what with the power washer forcing water into the wood grain. But the sanding! My back couldn't that much detail sanding with an orbital sander and THEN with a belt sander. Also, where does all that chemical run-off go? Good thing you don't have flowers or grass around your deck.

You would have to sand regardless. You can't put an oil stain directly overtop of peeling, faded Thompson's water seal.

It has help up really well. I wash and reapply a new layer of stain each year because I love the fresh new finish.

Its cool to use an Oil I used a Stain on my Pergola, Fence and partial Deck and it looks great but after 2 years it needs a refresher and fades. So I built a New Deck joining the old one and I decided to use a Semi Transparent Polyurethane It will Last Much much longer and you will not have to be touching up only draw back is smell when applying wear a face mask, dry time is longer overnight not hours. You did a Fantastic Job and looks Great. God Bless

I used the same Penofin oil, a ton of it just turned black…. I hate it. I called them and they said it’s the tannin in the cedar…… freakin pisssssed. The suggested their oil sealer instead of the red label. Not pumped about refinishing it for the 3rd time in 3 years.

Dude that stinks I'm so sorry about that. I have had really good luck with mine on redwood. Is yours cedar? I'm so sorry to hear that it didn't work out.

@@Remodelaholic yes sir, cedar. I certainly didn’t help the situation when I got a bit aggressive with the pressure washer trying to get the black out. I have to give the folks at Penofin credit that they were nice and wanted to help. Anyway, thanks for posting your video, I appreciate folks adding their knowledge and experience out there for the rest of us to see and pick up some tips.

I just looked and found that Penofin has a product for pressure treated wood. I would try that. I have not stained pressure treated before.

Allow the deck to sit for a year to allow for any expansion and contraction of the wood as it see's different seasons of weather. Of course weather it sees will vary based upon where you live. After its sat for a year, give the deck a good cleaning using a wood deck cleaner to remove any weathering, greying, or environmental build up the surfaces of the wood will show. If you use a pressure washer during the process allow 36-48 hrs dry time after the washing. Once dry sand the wood to remove any fuzz or rough patches on the woods surfaces from the wash. This also will open the pores of the wood to best accept the stain you will apply. Staining pressure treated wood is fine. Depending on the stain you go with, follow the instructions and definitely apply two coats. Go lighter on the second coat as it is to add depth to the stain colour, after the first coat has filled the pores. If you have oil soaked rags from wiping, soak them in water and get them off your property. Oil soaked rags can combust even hours later and start a fire. Use a staining pad and brush for best results. Personally I wouldn't use a roller ever with an oil stain. Cheers and good luck.

I have not researched oils so I take your word for it. Stains sux + 10 and you just found out why......many many many hours of clean up. Sealants can be pressure washed then reapplied....done. Sounds like oils are similiar.

The color is transparent redwood. There is a tint of red in it. It doen't harden. It soaks in the wood. In the video that is one layer of oil. It's best to do two or more. Thanks for asking.

Next time you can rent a floor sander at hd or lowes for about 50 bucks. It will save you a lot of time with sanding and it will also help flatten the deck surface.

My question is this: • Is redwood the best type of wood for decks bec they're long lasting? • Is redwood expensive? I appreciate your expertise in this area. Looking forward to your response. I love the look of a redwood deck. I think its a great option but you do have to maintain it. If you can afford composite that would be the best option. I think redwood is the second most expensive next to composite boards. Hope that helps! Good luck!

There is surface cleaner for power wash $38 for 12",(2500psi or 18" 3000psi for $48) it takes 1 hour to 400sq feet i just did it couple days ago

This house exterior is rendering i painted the walls grey louvers over and barge boards white. The kwila hard wood has aged needing more than a water blast. I brought a stripping wire brush attachment for grinder that ive fitted to petrol weed eater . Power washing is definitely not recommended and you showed exactly why. A lot of material must be sanded from the surface to remove the lines created by hard stops & starts with the pressure washer, and the rough/ raised grain. I'm always interested to know if there are any actual success stories so please update us over the next few years.

I disagree. The previous finish would not come of with just sanding and chemicals. Power washing saved hours of work and the deck turned out they way I wanted to. I wish I didn't have to but it really helped even with extra sanding that it required.

@@Remodelaholic The DIY approach is great for those who can handle the tools well, like you. However, for many home owners that attempt this, the results are not good. I'm a professional and have had to correct many disasters in my 35 years. That's why I say "power washing not recommended", simply to make DIYers aware of potential hazards (like gouging the wood or taking off their toes!). If you ever have to do this again and the boards are not extremely "cupped", consider renting a proper floor sander and edger from Home Depot. It's like using a giant belt sander and orbital sander but not as hard to handle as the monster floor sanders the pros use. Experience or excellent handyman skill definitely required but it's a very quick way to get a brand new surface. All nails/screws must be reset and away you go. The angled boards make it a bit tricky but still do-able, faster and better.
