Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics and they have indicated that its not necessary to register. How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
@shuggfilmzandstudio23542 жыл бұрын
So my question is you replace the battery before registering it? Is registering the same as programming? Or programming is a totally different step
@SimpleCarGuy2 жыл бұрын
You register the battery after you have replaced it. Registering is just telling the car computer that the battery has been replaced and it can start charging it like a new battery rather than an old one. If you change the battery and it’s a different capacity from the one you took out, you’ll have to program it aka letting the computer know it’s not the same.
@shuggfilmzandstudio23542 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleCarGuy ok thank you. We can still program it using this tool. So the scanner will ask if the new battery has a lower/higher voltage as the previous one? We click on that option to program the new battery? Am I right?

Amperage or current is regulated by the state of charge of the battery. When the battery is weak, the electromotive force (voltage) is not strong enough to hold back the current from the alternator trying to recharge the battery. As the battery reaches a state of full charge, the electromotive force becomes strong enough to oppose the current flow from the alternator, the amperage output from the alternator will drop to close to zero, while the voltage will remain at 13.5 to 14.5. When more electrical power is used, the electromotive force will reduce and alternator amperage will increase. It is extremely important that when alternator efficiency is checked, both voltage and amperage outputs are checked. Each alternator has a rated amperage output depending on the electrical requirements of the vehicle.

Is it possible that an unregistered battery can go bad in matter of weeks??
@SimpleCarGuy2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it would go bad in the matter of weeks, but in a few months it can. This could happen if your old battery was very very bad and required a lot more charging and higher amperage. Then when you installed your new battery, it continues to charge it at the same higher rate and thus frying the new battery by overcharging it. This can also happen if you install a lower capacity battery.

HI, thanks for the video, What is the importance of a battery registration? what does it does in voltage regulation from the battery to the main computer to other components?
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
You have to register the batteries on BMWs since at least 15 years ago and now-a-days on most newer cars. The reason is that the computer adjusts how fast and hard it has to charge the battery and as the battery gets older, it charges ‘harder’ as it drains faster etc. so, when you put a new battery in and don’t tell the computer that it’s new, it continues to charge it as if it was old and will overcharge. This will ruin most batteries after 6-12 months.

Hi Mark, In my case the battery was changed right before I bought the car, but they never registered it as you saw in the video. There was no record of battery renewal at all. I figured it would be better to register it if it's not too late. The car was for sale by a dealer before sent to an auction, so I guess they just put a battery in and left it at that. It is not a BMW battery and the scanner registered it alright, I can't vouch on all models, though.

Is your definition of hibernation simply disconnecting the negative lead from battery or is there more to it? Is this even possible with the E89 Z4? I also have a Z3 in my stable and over the years I've been removing the negative battery lead when I'm not using this Sunday driver. I put a marine style battery connector on the negative side of the battery terminal (custom made terminal lead with eyelet connector) and it's secured with a wing nut, no tools required to disconnect the battery. Battery issues are a thing of the past in my Z3. However the Z3 has a fraction of the electronics compared to the Z4 (another Sunday driver) so to help preserve the E89 battery I just purchased a C-Tek charger/tender I hope this works out...

I didn't encounter any issues like that, but it could be your issue. If you can, maybe leave the car on a trickle charger to see if it happens with the car connected. In my previous BMW, I had the car forget clock and some personalization, but never phone pairing.
@Shogun19823 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleCarGuy This helps narrow things down, I believe, as I've had some personalization forgotten too (seat position, radio stations). Will see what I can do about trickle charge setup. Thanks!

Hello,Great video,I have 3 scan tools,A Carly,An Autophix 5900 which is like your Ancel,And I’ve recently bought a Topdon Artilink 600,I used the Autophix to register a new battery 2weeks ago,it gives no info,So I tried Carly,It gives you a choice of different batteries AGM,Lead acid,Calcium etc,And battery capacity etc 85,90,105 mah etc,But my battery is an AGM 95 mah HSB019,I checked this on my new Topdon this morning and it states the last battery registration was a lead-acid at 91mah,Completely wrong info,I trust the Topdon over the others due to spec etc,I heard Carly battery reg doesn’t work,I went to the hospital the other day (25 miles round trip),I have an Ancel Bm200 pro battery monitor in the car,When I left here the state of charge SOC was at 98%,When I got home it was at 51%,I don’t know what the hell is going on.

You don't say anything about the replacement battery. Is it OEM?
@SimpleCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
That doesn’t matter that much. You just have to have the correct specs for your car. Cranking amps, capacity, battery composition etc.

I understand u did a register but what about coding ? I’ve heard is two different things u have to do ? Correct me if I’m wrong .
@tombanes Жыл бұрын
If you change the battery Ah you have to code.( like from a 90 Ah to a 80 Ah.) If you replace with the same size battery you do not have to code only register. You have to register all battery replacements in the BMW/MINI if it has an IBS system which I think started in 2007 or so.

you should not need to register as you should not have an IBS in the model year. I think the system started in 2007

Hi can this do an ELV counter reset ?
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
I don’t see that option. The closest I can see is the steering angle sensor function which initializes the steering column switch cluster (the wheel angle sensor).

question. You have selected the 2nd option for the first registration and then you selected option 1 for the second registration. I'm not clear on this. is there any difference between the option 1(4:11) and option 2 (4:47)? Thanks!
@SimpleCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
I was just showing that there are 2 different options. One registers a battery that is the same as the previous one and the other options allows to register a battery with lower or higher capacity.

Hello, I have a 2012 BMW X5. I bought the scanner a few months ago. I am about to out the battery to the car. I have a question. Last time I disconnected the battery to work on the car. The footwell module blew out. Fortunately it was under warranty so I had it replaced. The battery is old now and needs to be replaced. Should I replace it myself and use the scanner to register the battery or should I take it to the shop and have them do it and not take the chance of blowing out the footwell module again? Thanks in advance.
@SimpleCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
Well, I can't really make that decision for ya. I have removed and disconnected many batteries on BMWs and have never had any issues, so to me that's pretty strange. I would replace it myself, but I try to do all of the work myself and just be very careful and only disconnect the battery when the car is off.

Your video is pretty straight forward and clear. I know it's just a matter of time when I'll have to change my battery. Question: What if I'm changing from a Lead Acid to an AGM with the same Amp Hour 80 rating, is the process still as straight forward changing and registering the new battery?
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
I believe the scanner assumes you are swapping out the battery with the same specs as what the car came with originally. You cannot modify the settings with this tool. Thanks for watching!

It good but here the flaw. What happen if you get the battery with a slightly higher amp, how can you go in and adjust the setting. It need to correct the amp, you don't want ecu send info in to new battery when it not a properly right Ah, may mess it up battery. Who know!!!
@SimpleCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
So, there are 2 options, one is for changing the same battery and the other is for changing the type or capacity. You do not have to specify, but your computer will then learn the new battery. I don't 100% trust this second option, but I have no evidence against it either.

With all hidden features in a BMW I find it ridiculous that BMW did not add battery registration as one of the hidden features in their cars! BMW dealers and diagnostic owners (which they got from some supplier) and they're not BMW experts, rip you as BMW owner off should you allow them to register a battery!
