Used the rein back from the ground with halter and lead rope tonight to give my gelding some impulsion while I worked him on the ground. Worked great and really got him using his back end. Can’t wait to try under saddle!!!

After a break,I am back in the saddle again. I am fortunate enough to have a beautiful thoroughbred mare,we have clicked really well, my confidence has grown in leap's and bound's. Will definitely be trying to do this.

Such great timing! I watched the FEI Mandatory Outing last night, and I was amazed how many riders struggled with the Reinback in their tests. So many were stiff and bracey.

Very helpful guidance on the square halt. When I started with my gelding, he had a bad habit of going way behind the bit/curling up. (Original owner had heavy hands and legs, so it was a process of rebooting the poor horse.) I taught him reinback by simply "closing the door" (steadying my hands with no pulling at all), then slightly tilting my pelvis forward (but not leaning forward) at the same time as I brought both legs slightly behind the girth. Asking with my legs while not allowing the forward motion did the trick. It looks in the video like you're doing something similar. We still have occasional issues with the diagonal pairs being out of sync, but I'll pay more attention to getting a square halt. Thanks!!

Do you forget to practice the rein back?? I know I do and it really is such a wonderful exercise!! If you're having trouble with it, be sure to practice it from the ground!

My horse and I do Working Equitation in which rein back is needed in the dressage test as well as negotiating the obstacles. I found as well as teaching my horse the aides, I tut for back and cluck for forward .... this is working quite well (not sure if acceptable in pure dressage) it did seem to help in the initial training.

Thanks for sharing! In Dressage you cannot use your voice in competition but it can be useful in the training for sure!!

How does Kensington knows to stop backing? Do you release your knees and the “give -take, give-take? Does it matter which cue to do first or both at the same time? Is there a half halt just before? Excellent exercise in all aspects. You are amazing.

I had a lesson recently and started working on the reinback. This video was so helpful! One question - which rein are you activating/giving? It looks like it's the outside rein.
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Жыл бұрын
Technically it would be both, but it depends a little if you horse goes crooked into the rein back.

Amelia can you clarify what you mean by pretending you have wheels in your hips and the wheels "turning backwards." Does that mean you sit slightly back or forward? thank you

What are you doing with your lower leg? Are there other things in addition to closing knees and slight rocking forward on your seatbones? The latter is very hard to see how you are doing it.

Great demo! Question. The tempo in rein back from the ground appears to be a little rushed. I try to relax after each step to allow enable the horse to coordinate the foot fall. I find the few seconds in between each step enables a better diagonal foot fall. Thankyou

So I do not understand why you put pressure on with the legs when you are trying to go back, why not just give a rein cue? It seems it is sending 2 messages at the same time.
@LauraMitchell19832 жыл бұрын
Because you need to activate the hindleg 👍 the riders legs generate the energy in the hindleg and the seat directs the energy into stepping backwards. The hand should just be keeping the forehand light, you shouldn't be literally pulling the horse backwards. That's my understanding anyway
