As I got into my late 50s, I gradually realized that I no longer liked the California boho style that I had been wearing for 20 years. I was a bit lost 20 years ago when I was forced to prematurely end my beloved career because of an injury, and I was floundering for a new, less corporate style, and swung too far from that, into a very popular style that really wasn’t me. Then, two years ago, I lost more than two sizes, when I took up walking, and my clothes no longer fit. So, I took the opportunity, because I needed a whole new wardrobe, to revert to my earlier, much-loved classic style (but, of course, not nearly as formal as in my corporate days). The real me wears a simple dress, or skirt/trousers, blouse/shirt; sweater and a blazer or other jacket. I kept everything that was classic enough that I could still wear, mostly footwear and accessories, altered what I could, and will sell the rest (I’ve tried to donate, but I live in a really wealthy area, and the thrift stores are glutted and won’t take donations, and H&M recycling is shut down). I kept and altered everything that fit into my new-old style, but reducing garments by two or more sizes is very difficult, and not always possible. I am still wearing all those embroidered leggings and t-shirts as my house loungewear, rather than buying new, because I hate fashion waste). I did go into a lot of debt, but I feel like me again and look forward to leaving the house, when I can, in my classic outfits.

I totally relate. 57, at home doing art instead of corporate, hip injury, feel overwhelmed by old style( I’m an artist so my style is everything..right)....paired down to basics...now if feel even more creative with my clothes that are much simpler than that cluttery, heavy, confusing eclectic style.

My problem is that I like and need clothes but I'm so scared to spend money because I don't have a lot of money to spend (but still enough to live), so I get a lot of anxiety because there aren't ethical stores nearby and buying online is risky, I would have 80 euro for a jumper that I really need for example, but not 80 euro to waste on something that doesn't fit me or isn't comfortable. When it comes to personal style, I think I have one, which is comfy, natural fibers, dark colors... but I try not to focus on it because most of the time I don't really care about what I'm wearing unless it is uncomfortable or inappropriate. Still, having good clothes does make a difference on how people are gonna perceive you, and I've been judged a lot for my old clothes - both in positive and negative ways, but mostly negative, like people being suspicious when I walk around my neighbourhood which has had a problem with thieves. I've been approached by people using harsh words, or observed like I was gonna do something bad, and it really broke my heart because I'm a really sweet and caring person, but maybe don't appear as such. - Sorry for the long comment, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but today I've been really sad and felt like sharing my perspective

I'm sorry to hear all that Martina!! If it's not something that is super important to you, then just focus on the clothes that make you happy. If that's comfy clothes, then wear those. Try not to let others make you feel bad about what you're wearing, they have no idea. But of you are wanting get more pieces with style, a lot of the secondhand online stores have return policies. Ebay you have to look at the individually sellers return policies, I've purchased from some that have 30 day return but double check because some have no return policy. Thredup.com has a 14 day return policy but a $1.99 restocking fee. No worries on a long comment, I'm glad you shared your perspective and hope this week is a better one for you. Thanks Martina!

Sorry to hear that Lauren! I have videos on finding personal style that you might like kzbin.info/aero/PLw-zsvjzFwryASSIc23g3CtV2R9cVMrrJ Other wise maybe start focusing on black pieces, especially as you work in a salon. It is flattering, slimming, elongated. So start there.

My biggest problem is that I'm mostly at home. So I'm always in joggers or pj bottoms in the autumn/winter. I wear dresses and skirts in summer at home so that's not so bad. But in winter I feel so frumpy and I feel that needs to change. But I have a cat also so that means cat fur and I particularly like black. I'm beginning to consider choosing a couple of pairs of leggings from what I have and wearing those instead. Then it won't matter if they get furry as they are not my going out leggings. If I'm not war m enough in those I can always wear a skirt over the top of them. Then I won't feel so drab. Thanks for the inspiration 😁.

Yea, I'm at home a mostly too. It is hard to resist the pajama wear. One of the things that saves me is that I love jeans. So I always wear those and it makes me feel much better. If leggings will do that for you than that is perfect.

In regards to the question “How to know if you love something or the idea?” another KZbinr had the idea to rate your outfits. At the end of the day, rate your outfit from 1-10 for both comfort and style and see how you feel after that.

Really useful and informative but can you clarify if anchor pieces are just tops or could it be bottoms as well? Thanks 👍
@EmilyWheatley
@EmilyWheatley 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, anchor tops can be bottoms, tops, sweaters, etc. It's the pieces that speak to your style aesthetic the most that you want to revolve your whole wardrobe around. I'm going to do a video very soon that breaks this all down much more specifically.

Just one thought, I don’t think starting with black leggings or skinnies is out of most women’s comfort zone, we have been wearing those for years. I’d suggest a pair of looser, straight-leg jeans or trousers in dark indigo or black.

I love the idea of jeans. But will always grab a dress with a blazer and black combat boots. I keep buying jeans but never reach for them. If I do wear them,I am uncomfortable the whole time. I think that if I could live in a climate where I could just wear midi dresses and blazers I would be happy. I am still buying jeans and hoping for a spark. I like mid denim skits, but will still grab a dress if I want to feel comfortable. What can I do? I need to stop buying jeans which I don’t wear.🥺

Yes girl, stop buying jeans. I was the opposite to you a few years ago, kept buying dresses but never wore them, only wore jeans. So finally I stopped. Just wear dresses all day everyday if that is what you love and feel best in. Is it pretty cold where you are in winter? Have you tried leggings or thigh high boots or over the knee boots?

I agree it makes sense to plan a wardrobe/outfits. You tend to see what’s missing or superfluous from your style. No self-imposed deadline gives you the leeway to decide on an item, say shoes, and dedicatedly search for a good bargain. Plus, by investing time aiming for ‘perfection’ (of which your perspective changes anyway!) you have created an emotional attachment to your eventual purchases. My fashion timeline reads something like dresses -> jeans -> khaki -> lost & found (now!). On a side note I’ve decluttered one item. Couple of maybes. Issue is typically the silhouette but I figure colours I can always dye different...
