I recently decluttered all of the clothes that no longer fit (my body, my style, or my lifestyle), and I am left with very little -- 3 dresses, 2 skirts (one of which is not work-appropriate), 3 cardigans (only 2 are work appropriate), and 14 tops (a mix of tees, pullovers, and sweaters). I want to add a skirt, a pair of trousers, and a few button-up shirts (for that collar flip!), and this will help me as I research and consider what to add when the time comes to purchase.

I just found your channel and it could not have happened at a better time. After a substantial loss of weight (88 lbs) I am reorganizing my wardrobe. What I realized is that it was full of items that fit but that I did not love. I’m trying to find my style as I rebuild my wardrobe with pieces that make me feel fantastic. And most importantly, I want a wardrobe that allows me flexibility and choices. Not what a had for many years; a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear. Thank you for your concise, informative and visually pleasing videos.

It’s easy to see why you have so many positive comments on this episode! It’s like an entire wardrobe workshop in one fell swoop. So much good info packed into this one....keep emphasizing the need to go back to the core pieces because I’m finally beginning to see why😊

Thanks Sharon, that is so lovely to hear. And glad you're seeing the benefits of the core pieces. :-)

You’re amazingly knowledgeable in the sense that you ARE the missing link in building a better wardrobe. Your style WISDOM surpasses - by leaps and bounds, all the other KZbinrs that just skim the surface and NEVER elaborate on the details of building capsules. I also adore how you encourage personalization of each wardrobe or each piece for each person. Hardly anyone shares the EXACT same style esthetic! Go YOU! Many thanks 🙏🏽☺️

It"s OK to hate synthetic fabrics! They are not good for your skin or the environment. My personal hated fabric is polyester. It's best to stick to cashmere, wool, organic cotton, linen and silk especially if you want a small wardrobe that will last forever.

What is interesting is that my style is so different from yours, but your advice covers the spectrum and is always useful and valuable. I am 70 and tend to like tints, bright colors, feminine, whimsical clothing. I can't stand anything too heavy or with a downward movement. I have a lot of stress in my life, but my descriptive words are optimistic and playful juxtaposed with the requirements of my life which make me have to be competent, efficient, and professional. Those two sides are always fighting but your steady valuable advice seems to help me ground my flights of fancy. Thank you for your thoughtful, generous content.

I so agree JoAnn. Too many 40pluses trying to look like their teenage daughters with super tight clothing. I say rock your body shape but very piece doesn’t need to fit like skin . It looks uncomfortable or like an outfit styled to sell a product.

Just started watching you and I love it. I am 58 love style and am still getting to grips with mine. I moved to Portugal from Scotland 4 years ago, but my kids are still there, so my wardrobe goes from summer( really hot), to chilly in Scotland when I go visit. Before the pandemic I worked part time in a friends boutique and found myself drawn to her romantic flouncy style and bought a fair bit , now no longer working I have realised my style is def not like that, so I have a big declutter on my hands. This video in particular has helped me see that. Thankyou

I am so glad to hear that it's helped! It's hard when working in a certain aesthetic, because it pulls you in, even if it's not right for you. I've fallen prey to that many times. Thank you for sharing with us!!

Wonderful practical advice. I am WITH you on acrylic - terrible feel. Also, awful for the environment. Acrylic leaches microplastic into our water every time it is washed.

I have bold prints and colors as anchors in my wardrobe! My core pieces that I work around are colorful cotton wrap skirts with elephant and peacock prints. The shirts that I pair with them are colors like cream, mustard yellow, and olive green that pair with all the bottoms that I have. Having said this, I'm really picky about the colors that I use in my wardrobe. They're all warm earth tones.

Love that! So great to hear from someone with the boldness in their anchor pieces. I love elephant and peacock prints, so beautiful. And all those colors sound so yummy to pair with it. Rock on you!! Thank you for sharing!!

Living in a mild climate (Northern California), I’ve found that viscose/rayon is a great, breathable, not too warm, fiber. I think it’s underrated because they are a lot of cheap, flimsy rayon dresses out there, but good quality viscose is a very comfortable, breathable, environmentally friendly fabric. It’s not a synthetic, those are made from petrochemicals, but man-made from natural, cellulosic, plants fibers that often would have been landfilled. Wood pulp/sawdust is the most common, but there are many like bamboo, ramie, etc. Lyocell is even better, it uses a lot less water, and is more environmentally-friendly, to produce than other viscose fabrics. It also has luxury, silk-like properties, but is more expensive and harder to find. We need to vote in our internet searches; if we keep Googling “sweaters without acrylic” or “lyocell tops”, for example, brands will get the message and offer more of these better fabrics.
@EmilyWheatley3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I love good quality semi synthetic materials as well, great alternative.
@pamcamcris3 жыл бұрын
I'm in this boat too! Always put viscose/rayon/lyocell on top of my list if I can't find or afford a specific piece that's silk. I work in retail and it drives me nuts when I see something that I love down to the silhouette, color and possible fit, only to touch it and realize immediately that it's acrylic. 😵

I want to just restart my wardrobe lol, I currently have pretty bright clothing and I want to sell it all then buy darker clothing, mostly full of whites, greys, and blacks. Unfortunately my mother won’t let me sell them because she feels I should pass them down to my younger cousins (which to be fair is valid) however I could use the money to kick start a new wardrobe.
@EmilyWheatley3 жыл бұрын
Yes true! But that would be nice to pass on to cousins. Maybe going forward for any birthdays or holidays you can request gift cards to your favorite brands/stores and slowly change your wardrobe out that way.

Hello Emily, These last videos make a great trio, thank you! With your method, building a wardrobe sounds almost easy! I want to try it to help me declutter, especially when it comes to those items that remain almost unworn year after year even if I really like them. Your videos also help me resist sales shopping, and that's a big thing! Inner dialogue: "Oh, look at that grey coat! Oh, yes, it is beautiful. And on sale. Yes. And they have my size! Let's try it! So? Oh, it really looks good. It sure does. Except maybe this detail. Oh, it's just a detail. Yes, but still... But it looks more stylish than my black one. Yes it does. But still, that detail... And by the way, it reaaly looks like your black one. Yes, yes, that's true; but better. Yes, but until now, you've loved your black one. Yes... And didn't you say that all you needed to add was a long coat? This one isn't long. Yes... That's right... OK, let's move on...Good-bye, grey coat!". By the way, your hair and your red lips, waow, you really look great! Could you please make a make-up video?

Very clever, flexable guidelines I definitely haven't come across before and which can be easily applied to any gender. I've been following capsule "wardrobing" for about 4 years now and through my practices, found that year-round works best for me with sprinkling of seasonal pieces since I live in the Mid-Atlantic/North East region. I find your channel super refreshing and a definite top addition to my other capsule wardrobe vloggers. My two most favorite thing about your channel the most are that you're a sister pixie-cut-wearer and that you have the closest style esthetic to mine with a perfect mix of Signe Hansen/Use Less and Jaime Lee/Mademoiselle! 😁 Also noticed one thing: you spelled "Layering" wrong; you spelled it with an "o" instead of an "e". Excellent video: loved the fact that you demonstrate the process with your own wardrobe!!! I personally think that your anchor pieces have to be at least one top and one bottom (you should be able to dress yourself once with some pieces you own and love!) I got another point from a new youtuber that I started to follow "Naja Sierra", she has a very neutral, minimalist core style but she has other minor style personalities which she indulge with accessories (her edgy side with a bag with spikes and her boho side with a bag with fringe)I think it is a good idea. I struggle with "not compromising" when I cannot find easily what I am looking for but it is an excellent and very important point! I am also going to use your method to decide what to pack when we are able to travel again!!! Thank you for your well thought and in depth video!!!!

I hang up my t-shirts that I wear on a regular basis but put the hanger through the bottom. And I fold cardigans. :-)

I would like to see an example of or how to break down these steps when you have several different style aesthetics or if your style aesthetic is shifting or changing somewhat or drastically. Do you have to change your core pieces first? So how would it work if you had boho core items and you're changing towards say a more preppy style ( just an example). Thanks.

I like that idea! I will sort of touch on that in a video coming up speaking to personal style. But may be a good idea to make another one pointed at this. Thanks for the suggestion Sarah!

I don't like acrylic either as it doesn't wear well over time.

what would make/drive a person to want a change in they're style? especially if they are comfortable with the style they've had for years... nvm I just answered my question...

I hate all synthetic fibers. I have finally purged my wardrobe of polyester tops, which I loathe, it’s rough, itchy, sweaty and hot. Acrylic is more difficult, I had to buy some sweaters with it to fill a desperate gap (I didn’t have a single one), so I plan to gradually upgrade those, too, as I did with the poly. The difficulty is that these fibers are so ubiquitous that it’s hard to find clothing without them, especially on a tight budget like mine.

Note, acrylic is, ounce for ounce, hotter than wool, it’s not our imaginations that it feels too hot.

Yes, crazy how many use synthetic fabrics these days, even some luxury brands. Thanks Kimberly!

Most consice and helpful videos. I binge watched your videos since yesterday and this morning put a new outfit together that I felt was a good combo of smart casual and edgey and me. So happy. I wonder if you could link your own clothes. For example where did you get your strippy black and white socks and stand up collor shirt?
@EmilyWheatley3 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you are finding the videos helpful, makes me happy! The shirt is unfortunately from Club Monaco but got it 6 years ago, so no longer have it. But it's basically just a black button up with the collar poppped. The socks are from Love Sock Company rstyle.me/+p1f0Tln9rM8eY3t38jhM-g

This was fantastic!! Really trying to follow and learn! This helped clarify several questions about creating a capsule wardrobe because mine is still a bit schizophrenic. Which is fine but need some rules moving forward.

Yea, it's ok to be all over the place. But will help to have a few guidelines to not make so overwhelming. Thanks for the comment Saskia!!

Hi Emily, I have a question, the clothing you feature is absolutely beautiful but it’s a little bit out of my price range. Do you think you could make a video perhaps on basic essentials to build a wardrobe but maybe what to look for if you’re going to say a target or a Walmart and how to find the best quality there? I’m not sure if this is what your channel does or not but I figured I would just ask

I'll try to do one that is more specific but I did do one in the past that might help in the mean time....kzbin.info/www/bejne/mICtco1rnKmYbLs

Some pieces or I should say many pieces I love so much, I'm afraid to wear them. In historie my wardrobe wasn't very qualative, but now it becomes more and more. Nevertheless I'm afraid, cause it was so time intensive and complicate to build my new style.

I like the idea of merging two styles to create your own and unique one. Question is - how to put together cute nerd and crazy b*tch styles to make it look good and not like I am insane :D
