It's great to see that there are actually instructors out there who understand that the roll release is not the only type there is. In case anyone is interested, there's a man by the name of Kelvin Miyahira who studies the golf swing to great lengths and one of the many articles he has written is specifically about the various release styles used by PGA Tour players. If you liked this video and are interested in learning even more about release styles in greater depth, I suggest giving the article a read. Google "PGA tour release styles" and the first result should be the one you're looking for

great vid. my golf instructor was explaining these releases to me the other day as I couldn't quite understand why my hands weren't rolling over post impact like tiger, rory donald etc. He then explained that he was teaching me the drive hold release as this type of release requires less timing (although you sacrifice distance). Thanks for explaining it in a different way, especially why you need to bow the wrist with this type of release.

Its now March 2018 and I hope you are still teaching? This is the best 1 plane series I have come across. I have been playing the Moe Norman style to some success however I have started your system and im feeling less complicated. Im sometimes forgetting to move the body forward in the downswing and pulling my left elbow back comming thru, however that will come with practice. Thanks from a hot summer in N.Z.

Glad I watch this video. It helps a lot. I couldn't understand why I hook my ball all the time until this video. I always have squad back swing with bow wrist but then I stop and had roll release. Last few days, I practiced hold and turn through the swing. Not only I got straighter shot but also increased in distant! I bombed 2 drives well over 300 yards and even 270 yards with head wind. 195 yards into the wind with 5 irons and over shot it where I used to hit hybrid but still short! Will continue to practice. Thank you.

Good info Josh. I used to roll the club through impact and found that I can spray it everywhere, however with the 'stable' release I hit it straight 90% of the time and I actually hit it further than the old roll release because I can put more power into the downswing knowing that it will fly straighter. Cheers rob

@TheNYgolfer You should inform Dustin Johnson of that.He`s totally bowed at the top.Regarding the rolling of the hands, whenever you start releasing the club, the head gain speed but the body is slowing down.With the second option you`re keeping the right elbow and right wrist angle intact until late into the swing. So the body is keeping its acceleration and speed. So you can deliver a lot energy. So I would say that you`ll be more powerfull with the second option with a more compressed ball.

The stable release is SO much harder. Most people I've seen try it just shoot the ball straight right in to the woods, almost every time. I personally think the roll release allows me to generate so much more power because it activates my forearm muscles.

Stable release requires very fast body rotation through impact. Helps to have flexible wrists, too, as bowing (flexion) the left wrist will most likely reduce hinge (deviation) reducing your lag. A big reason there is power trade-off. Some guys bow late in the downswing and get more late lag, but that can bring timing back in to it. The secret to the roll release it to not force it, load, turn, release. Don't force or you'll spray it all over the place.

@TheNYgolfer I actually find the 'stable release' has increased my distance NOT shortened it. I now feel a lot more compression into the ball and the actually hit is not much purer. Previously the rolling was ok but so timing intensive it varied from day-to-day and shot-to-shot. I play off 11h/c and can honestly say the the Stable release is the way forward for me with irons now half a club longer at the vary least and my driving is much improved too.

Josh, I'm a bit confused. So from the top I iniate my downswing with my hips. So am I then supposed to pull with my left arm and then at a certain point close to i.oact start consciously hitting with my right hand? This obviously for a roll release. Is that the sequence? Sounds a bit complicated. At the moment, I just concentrate on spinning my hips around from the top and then spinning my shoulders. I think that might be a stable release but I'm not sure. Can you help please.

My coach Roger Gunn is teaching me a more stable release through impact for a few years now since I started seeing him for lessons. Slowly over time I have gotten used to a stable and quieter release. The roll release is powerful, but I did find myself over hooking the ball way too much. Yes I did have a lot of 300+ drives with a roll release, but it was out of control. Once I started using a more stable release, I’ve been a lot more accurate.

Awesome tip. Now understand that there are two release types. Can you active same swing speeds with both releases?
@TheNYgolfer
@TheNYgolfer 13 жыл бұрын
@chm97chm97 once mastered the "stable release" requires less skill because the timing factor involved in a roll release is eliminated. It is much easier to work the ball in as stable release. The disadvantage is a loss in distance since the rolling action of a roll release actually adds power (#3 accumulator per The Golfing machine). So do you want accuracy or do you want distance? It's a trade off. Do you prefer a 300 yard drive that is 30 yards in the woods or a 260 yard drive in the fairway?

I'm trying to get away from the stable release because it requires so much back turn which I feel is more strain on the body, and also you don't get the benefit of additional acceleration from the rolling wrists. However it seems easier to maintain good form at impact with the stable release: ie. flat left wrist.

Great video about two releases. My teacher taught me to use roll release with an in to out swing. Recently, I have been hooking a lot of my drives and iron shots. So I switched to stable release. I am more comfortable with this, however, I am slicing it more often. Any advise to keep it straight?

Thank you for the great lesson. Dustin Johnson is known for his bowed wrist at the top of his swing. I imagine that this is similar to the stable release, correct?
@rektspresso7288
@rektspresso7288 9 жыл бұрын
Barry Bauer Yes Dustin uses what this guy refers to as the "stable release". Although he's one of the very few players that sets the flexion (bowing) of the left wrist in the backswing instead of later during the downswing. This is quite difficult to do unless you have very flexible wrists/forearms, but I imagine it could be even more effective than bowing sometime in the downswing if you can pull it off. Other than Dustin, a few players who bow the wrist in the backswing rather than downswing include Graeme McDowell, Lee Trevino, and Brooks Koepka, all of whom are tremendous ballstrikers

Fred Couples does a roll release too. That’s why he’s able to hit it so far with a smoother swing. I used to do a roll release for 12 years up until two years ago. I’ve been more accurate in the past two years since I started golf. However, the stable release did sacrifice my driving distance somewhat in the beginning of that change a few years ago because with a roll release, it was a lot easier for me to build effortless club head speed. Now I speed up my swing with the stable release through body rotation.

IMO DJ's bowed wrist changed golf. The fact is you need a bowed wrist at impact and you can ....Set up with and extremely strong grip, or bow you wrist at the top like DJ, or roll your wrist down just before impact.... Either way a bowed wrist is the result. IMO It seems a stronger grip at setup seems to be most logical and non-manipulative swing
