When I was learning Spanish I did exactly this and made my own dictionary. I made it up to 1,976 words. I would write 10 words every day and then review them at night before bedtime. Then the next day I reviewed the first 10 and then studied the following 10 I added that day. Yeah, it was definitely worth it!

What really works is actuality using new words in as many different sentences as possible. Writing it is essential too if you want to remember how to spell. I learned a lot of words in Duolingo and Mondly. These apps don't really help to develop the speaking skill but they are great for vocabulary learning.

Hi dear teacher! Your advices are right on the money as always! Thankfully yet I don't have to learn such words as " dog" or " cat but I definitely will stuck with such words as " cohesive, mediocre, smidge, insidious, compelling, poignant etc."and as they are kinda abstract and don't relate to any topic the only way is to learn them within the context so it's quite often they really go in one ear and out of the other and it's kinda frustrating and infuriating! 👂👀👂

I like to add one extra tip that works for some not all new voc. Try to link a word in your own language. One real example. Recently I learned the word ABORT = bring to a premature end. We don't have a word for that, but we have (sorry for the religious) ABORTIE = ending a pregnancy in an early stage. Because of the link it is far more easily to remember and it makes the word meaningfull.
