April, watching you remove the toilet was hilarious, having experienced it before, I could relate. After that experience I realized that instead of carrying the toilet OUT of the bathroom, I could simply turn around and place it in the bathtub to drain. If I'm just going to reuse the same toilet, it can just stay there until I'm done with the flooring, painting (at least that unpainted patch behind the tank) and replacing the baseboard trim. Just finished this same project and absolutely love that flooring for easy installation. Regards to you and Texas.

April, the flooring you are using is fine in small areas with no sun; but the sun hits it, it will separate at the joints. I put it in a living room, that had a large window and ended up having to tear it out. Before anyone comments I bought a 75 lbs roller to make sure the joints were tight. Love your work.

You remind me of my mum when I was a kid. She would do everything herself, even replacing tiles on the roof. Guys would pass by and shout "you ok up there, love?" - you can take that to mean "that's not a woman's job". My mum would just shout "F**k off" without even bothering to turn and look at them, haha. Love the toilet saga! Similar recommendations as every one else with 1 more: after using the plunger, open up a yard size trash bag in the tub. Then when you remove the toilet, just turn around and sit the toilet in the bag. Then pull the bag up around the toilet to carry it out of the house. No wax ring mess and any remaining water is trapped in the bag or goes down the tub drain. Heck of a lot easier to clean the tub, than the whole house. And your shoes are saved!👍

Oh my GOSH! By laughing along the way, you have just made yourself RELATABLE to everyone who has done something just like that, whether they want to admit it or not🤣… THAT is why you are dynamite, April! Thanks for the “flush” tip lol! I miss these types of projects from you. I think I had second hand heebie-jeebies from toilet water spilling out everywhere and especially on your shoe 👏🏼 I really appreciate the tip about keeping the old linoleum flooring down as a flat surface incase the floor is uneven or leftover glue remains. My bathroom is so old and a former contractor I had assumed it has water damage (makes since for how old it is) that I have to gut mine back to the studs unfortunately. If you have that type of project I’m here watching 🤟🏽

Some other tips for toilet replacement. Once the toilet is removed (and your socks and shoes are dried!), you should remove any residual wax from the flange. Take a paint scraper and run it over and around the surfaces and wipe onto a rag. This will keep you from tracking it around the room. Remove the flange bolts so you don’t accidentally trip on them, or snap them off and break the flange. The bolt heads are slotted and slide out easily. Lastly, stuff a rag into the flange to prevent sewer gases from venting into the space. If other toilets or sink drains are flushed during the project, it could push gases through the open flange. Love the work that you do!

April, another way to nearly empty the bowl- after emptying the tank, force flush the bowl by pouring a bucket of water down it. That simulates the flush action, and will leave the bowl nearly empty and you'll be able to carry it without leaving a water trail. Try it sometime when you're bored to tears after you get the job done- and you don't have to empty the tank for it to work. Cheers! Good channel!

You will find that eventually will have to get rubber cement and apply to the glued areas of the flooring. I did everything to apartments except masonry work, that's because I hate doing it, but I used that style of flooring in several of the apartments and found out that those glue seems don't hold together that well at all. So in the future I recommend put down linoleum floors or better yet ceramic tile. The tile will be the best choice. It may take longer but it will last a lot longer.

Turn off the water. Flush the toilet. Use a plunger to push out most of the water. Use a sponge the get the rest of the water. Use the sponge to empty the tank. Then you can disconnect the water supply hose. Remove the tank. Remove the toilet. Stuff a rag into the toilet drain to keep from getting dirt in and sewer gas out of the house. Not really a difficult job. And using the right procedure not very messy either. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.

You can get a pack of gelatin at any large box store meant specifically for removing a toilet. It is similar to what's in a diaper and it expands when it absorbs the water. It stops the sloshing when you remove the toilet and is flushable with no bad effect after you reinstall (if you're not replacing with a new toilet).

Sweet job so for! Other hints for handling a toilet that still has water in the "U" bend..... carefully pick it up then empty the whole think into the bath (then clean the bath) or that bin/bucket you've been using to catch water up to this point. You can also use a whole range of devices to remove the water, starting with any type of pump including an old turkey baister. The sponge trick does work as well but can take a little longer then some of the pumps. I've learnt a lot since the first time I moved a toilet and had the same lovely experiences as April..... except I was wearing Homer Simpson slippers which were never the same again 😭😂👍👍👍👍

to get the water out of the bowl before removing it, you can plunger it to get most of it out of the trap before unbolting it from the floor.
@stevejeffryes50863 жыл бұрын
To empty as much water from the toilet as possible before you lift it out of place, after you shut off and disconnect the supply and flush the toilet, pour a bucket of water quickly into the toilet to star a siphon. The siphon effect will use the momentum of the bucket of water to get the water flowing and it will continue until the water level gets down to the level of the top of the trap. That will minimize the amount you have to sponge out. In stead od sponging the water out, you can put a pan on the floor just a little way from the toilet and tile the toilet back over the pan to drain the remaining water in the trap into the pan. If you are tall enough, you can use a bucket instead of a pan, but you do have to lift the toilet far enough the clear the edge of the bucket.

The instructions I gave my fresh out of High School helper before we demoed 3 bathrooms this summer: Flush the toilet before you disconnect and again after you disconnect and then the toilet water you are dealing with will be clean. Still, contractors and woodworkers always have cuts and contusions on their fingers, so wear nitrile gloves while spongeing out the tank to prevent sepsis. Sponge out the tank first, then the bowl. Once you unbolt the bowl, tip it forward and the remaining water in the trap will enter the bowl and you can sponge it out too. Putting the bowl directly into a contractor trash bag is a good idea, but sponge the water out first, there is too much water left in a typical toilet to be contained in a trash bag, especially if it's an old 1920's toilet. Cap off the closet flange with a temporary cap to keep sewer gas out of the house. If you are reusing the same toilet, clean off the old wax ring now and scrub down the toilet so it's ready to reinstall. Also if you removed the tank, order new seals now so that they are hear before you are ready to reinstall it.
@DanStone10253 жыл бұрын
An idea to contain the toilet spill! Have a large Rubbermaid tub or a cement mixing tub available to put the toilet in. Then all the extra spill is contained and doesn't spill all over your flooring in the house.

@christopherdahle99853 жыл бұрын
It's probably better to continue the flooring under the area where the vanity will be. Although it saves you a bit of work, you are creating a low spot under the vanity and if you have small children, or adults who are seals in the bathtub, the floor gets wet and then water can seep under the vanity and pool there, then seep under your new floor. Since there is not a lot of ventilation under the vanity's floor, it's a nice home for rot and mold and earwigs.

I wish I had that little to do... I have to go down to the studs, rewire (as the house is not grounded so I am rewiring and adding circuits at the same time), insulating, repiped to pex, update the floor, pipe in the drain to the shower pan, cut down the too tall cast iron toilet drain, trace the wiring to the over mirror light box that was covered over at some point (but is still hot) and deal with plaster on older sheet rock for demo. Getting too old for this!!
@ClintSatterwhite3 жыл бұрын
All of that water that was spilling from the toilet was in the integrated p trap. The easiest way to get most of it out is to pour about a gallon of water in the toilet bowl to simulate a flush. The siphon action will take most of it out of the trap. Then every little remains and can be removed with a sponge.
