@AprilWilkerson I love your energy! The loft turned out great! The outside shot of your mini balcony...I had no idea how big your roof is! I have a suggestion. Using the mini balcony as the access, make a small viewing deck off a widows walk!

Love that you still wave bye. I remember your corner of the garage workspace where I first started following you. I wouldn't even call it a shop. Most of the comments back then were from older men, woodworkers for years, giving you tips and encouragement. I always thought they were like kindly grandfathers, happy to pass on their knowledge to a hardworking, interested kid. And look at you now! Teaching us as you learn. Never stop! You and your 'family' of makers are the best of you tube. Thank you.

Hi April. I have to say you are very inspiring. I am glad you do video's showing your work step by step and never boring to watch. building things is a journey for sure. I do watch a lot of wood working videos and as I see it, everyone has their own style and all are good to watch and learn from. I have a 4 car garage which is all work shop and now I am older I bought a laser engraver cutter and it is not as strenuous. your loft is a great build and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

Good morning, April! Thank you for posting this. I've built several loft ladders over the years and it is always refreshing to see how you build your projects in comparison. I have to be honest and say, I love your builds better! Maybe because "I" don't have to build them!😄 Thank you so much for sharing these videos. I absolutely enjoyed every second of this series! Your work is truly inspiring and I hope it helps the younger generations to put their ideas into action and watch them come to fruition as yours have. Have a wonderful week! God bless.

A traditional cut in treads in the ladder's stringer similiar to a housed stair stringer would have eliminated all glue and metal fastners and you could have tightened the treads as your house and the ladder stringers go through their 5-10 years of humidity changes. But your ladder is well designed and you'll figure a way to tighten the treads as/if needed. Hopefully you'll consider using housed stringers (the proven old fashioned way to build stringers for tightening as the stairs age) in any future stair/ladder builds. Well done for this project!

I would HIGHLY recommend putting threaded rod between the stringers under at LEAST the middle rung of the ladder to keep the stringers from spreading. I had a similar loft ladder that failed that way while a young friend was visiting and he broke his arm. You do NOT want that to happen. We rebuilt the ladder with a threaded rod under every rung...
@ralphwoodard6094 ай бұрын
So far everything looks great April. In my humble opinion, though, I think 25° would’ve been better for the stairs, especially for going down and I think maybe one more tread spaced out would’ve been easier on the person climbing up and going back down. It seems like a lot of distance it looks like 8 to 12 inches. Other than that, good job.

I question the location of the loft ladder next to the open stairwell. From a life safety perspective this could be dangerous and probably wouldn’t pass building codes. Will you be adding some kind of barrier (glass panel?) between the ladder and stairwell railing?

i'd built myself a loft bed last year, but health reasons haven't been able to build the desk under it and the ladder for it. so i'd been making do with a step ladder... finally gave in and just bought a better fold out step ladder last week, just need to figure a way of attaching it to the wall to make it easier to fold and unfold. Would have been awesome to have something hand built like this, but i guess it wasn't meant to be. just curious though, how odes it feel going down your ladder? getting down tends to be the hard part, and a good handle helps make that feel a lot easier. but it looks like your handles are a bit low to comfortably get on the ladder. like you have to step onto the first step down before you can grab the rail, so theres a potential to miss the step and not have anything to grab.
