Before going through all of this, just try and grab it with a set of pliers and see if you can twist it back out, i have done that a few times with succes

I noticed you were power tapping with a hand tap (4 flutes). These are designed to be powered by hand not machine because they require that you stop forward motion every so often and back up to break the chip that is forming on the cutting edge. If you do not do this they have a tendency to break due to chip packing. A far better choice for power tapping is what is commonly referred to as a “gun tap” which has an angled notch at the beginning of the tap which serves to push the swarf ahead of the tap thus dramatically reducing the tendency of the chips to pack. They are ideal for through holes such as your example, and can be used on blind holes if the design allows for the drilled hole to be deeper to allow for a chamber more or less, for the swarf to be pushed into. Small sizes such as you show being used are also 2 fluted, thus increasing the internal web thickness of the tap making them stronger to boot. Try them. You will soon stop using hand taps for power tapping I believe.

Best one I’ve seen yet. I broke 2-1/4 x 20s today. I’m ashamed of myself. 1/8 carbide and pecking should do the trick. I won’t be able rest tonight. Lol

Using a spade point, straight flute, solid carbide drill works a treat, and there's a much smaller chance of breaking it. I have a couple in my toolbox specifically for this application. Last time I had to drill out a broken tap, there was over an inch of the tap embedded in the part, and it took longer to position the quill in the x/y than it did to drill out the broken tap. If you use taps regularly, you WILL break one.

Maybe a small magnetic base drill could work on a car?

I would have used the length of the tap sticking out and vice grips to back it out before I tried what you did. IF that failed to remove the tap...then I'd do something like you did.

As others have said, you should be using a machine tap (spiral point), not a hand tap. Also, you should chamfer the holes before tapping. Nice shop you have there!

Lol the amount of comments on this video saying I am doing things wrong is amazing. The point is to show you how to remove a broken tap, not show the optimal way to use a tap. I wish I had been more clear about that. Thanks, the shop is in perpetual evolution, it looks much better now, we need to do another shop tour video..

Procunier tapping head changed my life. I can tap M1.6x0.35 holes like it's nothing now.

Those are great! Just be very diligent about drilling the right hole size and they make it fast work.

Can you do this with carbide tap ? Use carbide endmill small pecks

I don't think so. In that situation it would be time to take it to the EDM department.

Yes you can. You have to use very small.pecks...0005 pecks. Takes a long time but yes u can.

i’ve encountered the nightmare many times and I’m going out into my garage right now to see if I can peck through an end mill.. Because I’ve tried to set it up and use a car by 10 mil to cut it out but no go,, i’m gonna try this pecking method…

The pecking is required to prevent overloading and breaking the end mill. It works very well.

what if you don't have a milling machine?

That's a tough one. I would consider doing the same with a mag drill although the speed may be too slow and if you don't have a milling machine you are not likely to have a mag drill ether?

Yes exactly. Pretty much all steel taps can be cut with carbide. A Carbide tap is probably a different problem.. EDM maybe.

Glad that worked for you. I am not saying this is the only method for removing a broken tap. What I need everyone to understand is that this technique is a great solution for broken taps that are galled in place and no tool or toy or welding is gonna get it out. Try all your easy methods first and then come back to this. If you broke a tap because you were not paying attention or you didn't run it straight or you accidentally knocked the handle then yes the tap will usually come out easily by the methods everyone is mentioning. Im talking about taps that are galled in place and chemically bonded to the part. Most of us don't have edm so this is a tried and true method of removing it. Maybe I should have been more clear about that in the video. Tell me how you weld a bolt onto a 3mm tap broken 1/4 inch below the surface.

U are using to big is and em major diameter of a 10 tap is .190

Actually, 1/8 is .125 inch. More than enough clearance.

The point is so you have a strategy when a tap breaks off in a hole below the surface and there is nothing to grab on to and you don't have a fancy EDM machine. I should have explicitly explained this in the video.

Sorry I wish we made it more clear but you missed the point. I was showing one way to get a tap out that you cannot grab with any tool.
