Your knowledge and experience helped me so much. I don't think I could've removed the hinge pins from one of my really old doors without your pliers trick. I should add, I liberally sprayed WD40 on the hinges as I worked, and I think that helped. Invaluable info presented here, my good sir!

Thanks for this video. I know its forever old but its super helpful. I thought it was way more complicated than it was and you're absolutely right, a few dozen coats of paint and things aren't as simple as a new hinge. Hammering the wrench was one of those "Oh, duh" moments for me. Thanks.

It's ok now. I took out the bottom hinge pin out 1st, then put in the middle one. Then I put in the bottom one at the end. Thanks again for the video.

*Thumbs Up* the painters tape protecting your door is a great step too many people omit, thanks for the tip about planing down from the top to protect your edge... I did not know that! My question is what if you are having this same problem but it's on a metal door with tamper resistant security hinges??? Thanks Knackers!!!

Just a minor addition:As others pointed out, WD-40 or penetrating oil are both quite useful for freeing up stubborn hinge pins. If you remove a hinge pin and find any rust on it, remove it with steel wool and lubricate the pin with a silicone spray lubricant before re-installing.

Well here's how I approached the problem: I loosened the hinges at the bottom and replaced the top screws with longer screws that could bite into the jam better than the old ones. My door no longer sticks and does not catch on the tile like it used to... I suspect over the years the door just got a little out of whack from constant use but I wanted to know if there was a more professional way of correcting this? I also wished I would have known your painters tape trick before had to repaint :p

Furball old mate, not a lot of joy in this one. I'd love to help you out but without seeing the problem in person it's going to be hard to give you a solution. He's not joking about wearing eye protection. Tools that are made to be struck by a hammer are always hardened steel. When a piece of hardened steel breaks off, it does so with unbelievable power. It will likely puncture skin, and maybe even your eye protection. Talk to any machinist. I guarantee he or she will know of people who were killed-DEAD-from pieces that broke off from hardened steel. It's no joke. Inspect your tools before use, and discard any that appear cracked, corroded, etc.

Sir Richard, l'm struggling to hear the "sing" in my old Eastwing that is obviously apparent to your good self. My industrial deafness has undoubtably impeaded my ability to pick up such a noise. I think l bought the old girl around about the time Jesus was a second year apprentice, so she has some age on her. With that in mind there is a chance she has developed a hairline crack. I'll have to take extra special care of her from now on. Cheers mate.

I've got hinges that have knobs on top and bottom of the pin. How do they come out?
@diyforknuckleheads9 жыл бұрын
Sometimes those hinges have a removable part (which is the top knob) and the bottom knob is there just for looks. Try tapping out the top knob and see what happens. If it doesn't move you may need to remove the whole hinge. Hope that helps.
@herbschneider232810 жыл бұрын
Another factor is that the hinges may need to be "thrown" especially if it is the leading edge of the door that is the problem.

I am sanding and painting the door frames (a drag) actually what is the door frame wood called going all around? any particular name other than door frame haha,. Me being a dumb girl tell me how to measure up for new (second hand) doors if we get them too. Also what is the name for top skirtings? I don't have the brains for this sort of stuff.
@diyforknuckleheads9 жыл бұрын
No dramas Genie. The door is attached to the door jamb and the timber surrounds are called the architraves. No such thing as a dumb question. Good luck with the painting. Cheers :-)
@diyforknuckleheads9 жыл бұрын
Genie Meadows Try this Genie. The skirting boards are the lengths of wood that sit on top of the floor and are against the wall. Skirting is only found there. Where the wall meets the ceiling is where the cornice goes. Hope that all makes sense. :-)
