How To Remove a Hyundai Sonata Shift Knob

Thank you for the video. I so appreciate your making a video and trying to be of help May I Strongly Add the following steps: - I used a screwdriver similar in size as in the video, to press at the lower portion of the button (Bad idea!!!) to get the button to pop up, as in the video. Afterwards, learned that the black button has 2 tabs underneath that presses outward (on the left & right side) in the middle. Thus, is essential to use 2 thin screwdrivers at the left & right side to press inward a bit. As a result of following directly the video, the two tabs broke inside the button. This means that the button won’t stay in the knob, and I must tape it down to keep it from ejecting off the handle continuously. now for the sake of getting bulbs to light the gears, now I have to replace the button if i can even find one for a 20 yrs old, 2004 Sonata. - The size of the socket is a 12 mm or I used a 1/2”.

Just a heads up for anyone wanting to remove the shift button, the screwdriver method shown here unfortunately is not the best way. I followed the instructions and had the same result as at 0:53 when you can see one of the tabs break off and fly under the driver's seat. You need to use two thin and stiff shims (like cut and folded soda can metal) at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions to depress the locking tabs, the button will then be able to be released.

I tried but would push the button down, but I used a couple slim metal phone tools one to apply tension to the 6 o'clock and another to shimmy the 3 and 9 o clock popped right out

Was waiting for this one...... Totally awesome video,because this knob is different than most of the other Sonatas and I was afraid to break something taking it off to refinish the oxidized shift panel underneath.....Thanks !!!!!

For the shift plate, does that just pop off? I am looking to paint it and I think it’d be easier to paint while removed. Thanks in advance!

@@cripplermaximus After you remove the surrounding cover and shift knob, the shift plate is simply held in with 4 small philips screws. Mine was scratched and I ended up wet sanding and then polishing it, it has a more shiny chrome racing look to it, as an added benefit it also polished the plastic gear indication windows which are clearer to see now.

I hope you don't call yourself a mechanic. And tell me you don't have a 12 mm deep well socket that you can use instead of twisting the shifter knob? When you pried off the black button of piece flew off. You cannot get those buttons at the dealership on Amazon or eBay I had to go to the junkyard and with my Dremel toll saw below the knob then I could take the piece but you broke it so you can't use it you just popped it on and made it look like you could use it. Is this how you work on all cars? Half ass?
