Thanks Brandon. I’m replacing my grommets on the exhaust gasket, and this is the best video I can find on KZbin. You and Kodibass have some great info on these old motors. I’m not sure where I read it, but blowing into the copper water inlet off the water pump informed me of my blockage. Really good info

Thanks, I could not figured out how it comes about. Being afraid of breaking something I waiting until I watched your video. Great job I have parts ordered and it will be up in no time. I have a 1979 9.9 long shaft great little engine. I've never worked on outboards before but my wife bought this little 14' boat, the motor and the trailer cheap. Thanks again, for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for the preview! I would only add that there are washers under the motor mount bolts. Take care they don't fall into the lower unit when separating. I was lucky I managed to recover the escapee with a magnet.

Wanted to do an impeller/water pump replacement on my 75 15hp johnson. Removed six bolts from lower unit and the flat head screw from shift cable. I couldn't get it to separate from and carefully used wedges to seperate the gap. The drive shaft is stuck in upper unit. Completely separated from the bottom now and completely stuck in upper..... How can i get it out. I am unsure of it has ever come out and have been researching. This is my first outboard repair experience.

Thanks for the video. I'm having two evinrude 15, one with long shaft (1991) with a bit low compression (90psi) and a short shaft (1984) with good compression (105 psi). I need a reliable long shaft motor. Is it posible to swap powerheads between those two, or is it easier to take the long shaft parts from the 1991 and put them on the 1984 short shaft, will everything fit? I'm a little worried about the water tube and shift linkage issues just by exchanging the lower units.
@BrandonsGarage Жыл бұрын
Whichever way you wanted to do it would probably be fine. As the powerhead needs to come off in both scenarios, I would probably just swap the long shaft kit to the short engine. This will leave both engines having their correct parts & number; thus retaining their values.

On my 9.9 the gasket on the bottom end of th exhaust pipe is mostly missing, is that going to cause a running issue? Pieces of the gasket fell out when I pulled the lower leg off to replace the water pump.

I have a 1976 johnson 15hp that ran good 5 years ago, and I have a 15 hp 1988 evinrude that ran great until upper pivot point between motor and mount broke while on water. Can I put 88 evinrude powerhead on 76 motor? Or should I just change out plugs clean carb and what not on 76 to get it back running? what would be most cost effective and least work? OH and BTW where you get electric starter to fit a 15 hp? my disabled butt has hell of a time with pull starts.

ThefatItalian66 X hysterical. But I’m looking at this video and his flywheel looks identical to mine. So I am certain it would work. Also how do you know mine didn’t have electric start once already? I removed the power head on my 86' 9.9 evinrude and shimmed the motor mount to snug it up. Nice and tight now. But I have a question about my exhaust tube! Itvis not square in shape as all views I've seen on everyones videos. Mine is round, and does not take the square form of the replacement gasket at the bottom.mine doesn't have one. And the tube stops an inch short of sealing against the bottom of the housing down inside. Have you ever come across this? Could I PM you with some pics or something? Thanks

Usually, those would be found in a 15 HP, However, mid 80's on, you'll frequently find them in both. Nothing to be concerned with. But, you can send me an email if needed.

@@BrandonsGarage,Thanks for your prompt replies. Yes that's right. I found this out also on a google search. And I also have a much bigger carb than what folks say is for a 15hp conversion. The throat on my carb measures 1.190" Dia. !! What is that off of? They say a 15hp carb should measure .875" and a 9.9hp - .625" Geeze, this thing's really been hacked! I don't think I'm gonna dig any deeper to check the reed valve set up at this point. It always runs great, so back together it goes! Fun Fun!
@dansarette1015 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage Ahhh,scratch that last comment about my carburetor. I guess the .625 diameter is down inside the throat which is what mine is. But with that tubne pipe from the 15 horse I could sure get another carburetor and do the Reed valve stop spacers as well and I'd have me a 15 horse!

@@BrandonsGarage Hey Brandon. I have an '88 all OE model minus the 15hp carb which was set up that way before I bought it and the reed valves which I just switched out the Chris Carson valves. Do you think the exhaust already has the round tube, and is there any way to check without removing the powerhead assembly? I'm trying to get the full 15hp conversion power out of it and don't want to leave any part of it out. Thanks in advance brother.

The motor runs great, but is ready to fall off! its so bad that the sag is pulling on the throttle cable and ruined it, so gotta replace that too. Please help ! Thx

@@BrandonsGarage right. I kinda concluded that seeing your other clip on removing the shaft extension on the 9.9.
