How to Remove a MK7 Steering Wheel and Buttons (Trim)

Today we show you how to take off the steering wheel of a MK7 Alltrack. This video also applies to MK7 GTI's and Golf R's. Our steering wheel buttons were damaged so we had to take the steering wheel and trim off to get access to the buttons.

Awesome vid Paul !! For those that don't know, when you reconnect the battery and get that steering error code, you can start the car then turn the steering wheel full lock right, then left, then back to center to reset. If the cruise error light is on, simply shut off the car and start it back up again. I discovered this recently after installing by boost gauge and had the error lights come on when I reconnected the battery.

This is a good and much needed video, but as others have pointed out on the forums it's much much easier to do this with the wheel off and only requires one more step to do so. Also, if you have a proper trim removal kit, you should be able to avoid using a metal object like that pick-screwdriver which is definitely going to damage wherever you're prying. I took my wheel off a few months ago, and I found that - like anything else involving clips in the VW world - whether or not you're going to break a clip that holds the trim/bezel onto the wheel is a complete gamble. Even if you're careful and take your time.

Thank you Paul - this helped me to get my airbag off my GTI MK8 so I could put in some R paddle shifters on. FYI, there are three springs on the airbag that need to be popped. At first, I assumed they would be just on the two sides but there is also one on the lower portion of the steering wheel. Wasn't too difficult to pop off. Don't underestimate Paul's advice to lower and pull the steering wheel out too! I did get error messages when reconnecting my battery but they did go away after the first start up.

How do you unlock the steering wheel while the battery is disconnected on the Mk8? I'm about to do the same mod, maybe I'm overthinking it with the whole push button start 😂

​@MoF4tt if you press the start button without your foot on the brake pedal, it unlocks the steering wheel. You can then disconnect the battery and the wheel remains unlocked.

Great video and DIY, Paul. I was going to do a steering wheel retrofit on my mkv. My car has bluetooth , but no steering wheel control. So instead of doing the whole steering wheel, an I just add the left side buttons, change the swc and code it with obdeleven on vcds?

Instead of disconnecting the battery what I do is for kessy cars keep door closed when after turning ignition off(keeps the wheel from locking,once u open the door the wheel lock activates) or not removing the key on regular ignition vehicles for the same effect. Anyway great video keep them coming

You guys should make a video on how to remove the door bezels where the blue/red LED light strip is on the front doors and also door bezels in the rear on a mk7/mk7.5 Golf/GTI/R. My passenger side has a deep scratch on the bezel and I don’t know how to remove it. Might get carbon fiber ones. Haven’t been able to find a DIY on how to do it and don’t want to risk using a trim tool and messing it up

( I spilled cola on it and want to clean in between the buttons ) Do you think that's possible and if so, what screwdriver would you need to remove the black screws as opposed for the silver screws. I bought a Custom VW Steering wheel that came with all the Multifunction Buttons and after quite an ordeal finding out NOT ALL VW buttons are the same some work with ACC some don't. It just so happens the Custom Steering Wheel buttons wouldn't work on my 2017 Alltrack SEL w/ ACC. The proper PN/ 5G0959442PICX for my Alltrack (at least that's the P/N dealerships show online) There are at least 4 different P/N's all looking the similar but they're not. I was successful removing trim ring and did it out of car I actually think it might be easier than in car as shown. One thing I noticed is the barbs that lock trim into place are not clipped in but rather plugged into the rubbery hole and kind of just spread the holes in wheel while pulling out or pushing back together...but they are tight friction fit to be sure. I was really stressed about doing it but after getting to start it wasn't that bad at all. Just be careful and just a little at a time all the way around...a couple times should do it. I now have my new custom Steering Wheel in car and control buttons ALL work properly and Zero warning lights. EPC and ACC malfunction lights were on before swapping trim and controls.

Hi Paul, thanks for another great video. I did this a few weeks ago and accidentally pulled out a couple of wires from both DSG paddle pigtail connectors. Does VW offer a terminal or pigtail replacement for the DSG paddles?

First, thanks ShopDap. Second, some supplementary tips on trim having recently done this. Cheap deck of cards. Wedge them everywhere first for gradual release of tension. Also, fold them in half for tight spots. Then, lil chizlers; get a pack of 3-5. They start thin and then get thicker and have good, flexible angles. Great placeholders to keep tension. Lastly, use hook style pick to do the final pulls. Don't pull the trim itself with the pick, rather, hook-pick the black pegs Paul shows, the ones visible inner not outer. Pulling is done with your fingers being ever sensitive to spreading the pressure and gauging how much. Do avoid poking with picks on the outer edge of trim or your leather will never forgive you. So for MK7's with kessy, do you turn the car in the on position (so that your steering wheel isn't locked) then unplug the battery?

You turn the wheel all the way to the left, turn off ignition, unhook negative terminal on the battery, disconnect that first clip. Then, reconnect the negative terminal long enough to turn the wheel all the way to the right. Repeat the process of unhooking the negative terminal and getting that second clip loose. Kessy = 2-part process, in my experience.

I actually discovered when the battery was disconnected long enough the steering would stay unlocked. The most difficult part of this job, by far, is removing the trim without damaging. My trim was so in there, I had to put it back on the car to hold it, add WD-40 to the top 4 clips (GTI wheel) and pry it out with a plastic trim tool.

Instead of disconnecting the battery, you could just remove the Horn fuse or relay, then put it back on when done. The dash will be a light show after you reconnect the battery.

goalie roller...Wondering if you've done that...from my experience there is no "just" in anything in Newer VW's or other newer cars because everything is coded to your particular car, just replacing a simple electrical part your car might not recognize it without coding and I'd be willing bet "just" getting GTI steering wheel and air bag won't be as easy as just removing old and installing new...count on it.
