Disconnecting the battery is often times not enough to disable the airbag. There are capacitors in the car holding charge for up to even a couple hours after the battery is disconnected to ensure the airbag works in the event the battery is disconnected in a crash. Also the airbag can trigger off of the most minimal volatage. So its best to wait an hour to be safe if your going to be disconnecting it.

cant you just short the battery wires together to discharge them?
@mrs_radrod
@mrs_radrod 4 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it the signal wire that the airbag runs off of and not just power? I would be honestly surprised if airbags actually fired during removal. I don’t have any experience to definitively say that they are safe or unsafe, but you do sit behind them all day, so I would be surprised that jiggling the wires would make them explode while nailing the horn doesn’t.

Howdy yall, long time tech here. If you're concerned about airbags popping while performing service on your vehicle, disconnecting the battery and shorting the positive and negative cables together (the battery is not in this loop!) Then attempting to start the vehicle will kill all residual electricity in the system. It's what I've done for years and has worked perfectly every time. I've done I have no idea how many Takata inflators. Just a tip for yall to help save some time.

FYI for all those saying you have to wait 30-60 min to discharge the battery: A fast-track way to discharge the capacitors and safely remove the air bag is to press the brake pedal a few times after you disconnect the battery. The brake lights typically will attempt to pull enough current to juice out any residual energy stored in vehicle capacitance. I do it all the time for my E36/E38/E39s with SRS service.

It's basically a miata with the body being all screwed up, the chassis welded up, a massive upside down airplane wing made of wood connected directly to the axles, a turbo from another mazda with the same block, cage, seats, and driver cooling system that's basically an ice tank that has a hose connecting to a baggie that goes around the driver.

WARNING be careful whem doing this mod, the mx5 is safe to remove airbag components after the battery is disconnected, however many brands and different models of vehicles within a brand have different procedures, Some you have to leave the battery disconnected for up to a hour so the system completly discharges of all electric thats been stored in capacitors and such, Personally after disconnecting the battery i turn the hazard light switch on and crank the ignition to the start position to try and disperse any electric that may be hiding within the components of the car,

My 1989 Tercel EZ Hatchback doesnt have as many electronics as your miata, however, parts are imposible to find. Watching these gives me an idea of all things to consider so I dont have to be as perfect as I usually try to be with things that shouldnt take so much brain power to choose. Thank you for the videos.

Just a a heads up if you are new to soldering. There is also solder with a lead core. Probably don't want to use that. Also, if you are soldering in your garage or really up close for an extended period of time, there are soldering exhaust extractors that you might also want. While it might not seem like a big deal, after years of soldering and breathing that in, it could cause respiratory issues.

chucking the oem wheel has been my first mod to all three miatas ive had so far. in the case of the second one, i ordered the hub before i even brought the car home. in the case of the third one, i took the hub off the second one immediately 😂. now im kinda obsessed with steering wheels and i have a stack of 15 or so at home that i change whenever i feel like it

Need to do the swap for every time doing MOT in Sweden. So, here are a couple of complementary details: * after disconnecting the battery, drain every lasting current by turning key to ignition position. That should send power to at least relays, fuel pump prime, lights and stereo. * when trying friends steering wheels, keep an eye on instrument panel, as the smaller wheels has a great chance to be in the sight of vision and hide tach and speedo partly. Adjust seat and check head-to-roof clearance too! Good luck with fixing those ergonomics! Written by a 1,85m long guy who feels so much better with Daikei hub, SnapOff FIA QR, 80mm dish 340mm wheel and slightly tilted back Sparco Sprint.
