A shoelace works better, especially for the really stuck ones. You can wrap the shoelace a couple of times around your fingers on each hand to get a good grip.

To those saying it doesn't work with a tight link, the advice to use a shoelace was spot on. My link is new and wouldn't budge, I was about to buy the tool out of frustration and tried it with a piece of non-stretching synthetic string, similar to a shoelace. The thing popped right off.
@AwesomeStoryTime127 күн бұрын
tried that with all my might and the shoelacr snapped before the quick link😭
@PhoenixB4U6 жыл бұрын
You made it look so easy, but I think it's only that easy on a fairly new chain. My quick link chain was pretty well maintained, but was 6 years old. It would not come off no matter what I did. I finally just used the chain pin tool from the Topeak multitool and got it off that way...after a VERY long time trying to actually use the quick link. Never again!

I have a gash on my hand from trying that. The quick link in this video must have been open so many times that the only thing keeping it locked together is the tension in the chain, and I wouldn't be surprised if that chain wouldn't snap open at the slightest slack.

Be sure you are trying it on a quick link that is meant to be removed, the SRAM chains have what looks like a quick link but in not designed to be removed, this allows for extra strength but once locked in that is where it stays. Check the documentation that comes with the chain or look up online

I’m sure this works and that’s awesome but do yourself a favor and get the tool. It is an incredibly nice and useful tool to have and again, it really isn’t that expensive. I know the OP said as much, but you have to understand, I am a man who doesn’t like to buy frivolous things and even though the chain tool might sound like a frivolous thing, I do not believe that it is.If I’m telling you that it’s worth the money, it is worth the money. Cheers for the cool trick though. I’m sure I will have to use it at some point when I’m away from my workshop, and don’t have my lovely chain tool (it really makes you feel happy to use it you know, sometimes I sit in my garage attaching and detaching my chain because the feeling of using the tool pleases me so much)

If you have an old chain you an get a lot more leverage by twisting the wire into a loop - about 3cm in diameter then insert a handle into the loop (such as a screwdriver) and twist the handle around - your old rusty quicklink will open (and bits will probably fly so wear eye protection)

If your quick link is seriously tough to release (like on 1by) you can use this same idea but tie a knot in the wire/rope. Because it is now a loop you can insert a screwdriver and twist. This twisting force pops any link out there👍🏽👍🏽 I’ve had to use it trail side 😒😒

this solution works for many old school quicklinks, but the 11 speed ones have been made a bit more difficult. Even remember the old squeeze ones, but this new one with 11 speeds from shimano that included the quicklink was impossible with almost all these techniques including pliers, might try using wire and twisting with the pliers or visegrip , but really concerned this may tweak the chain link before it goes!

I just successfully disconnected a previous unconnected KMC 11-speed masterlink that had about 300 miles on it. KMC, the hard ones. I knew it would be hard, so what I did was use very long thin rope, it should be the thickest rope that you can fit through the links, and soft as possible rope because you're going to use all the length to wrap around your hands. I did all that, wrapped the lengths around my hands, and made a couple of of my hardest tugs. Didn't work, I looked and it was actually halfway, so decided to knot a small loop in one of the rope ends and put my fingers through that as well as wrapping hand around the other end. Did that, and it came after a couple more acute tugs. A link of this sort definitely wouldn't have worked without figuring out how to get a super tug on the length. Wire would not have worked, even long wire, nor fishing line, nor anything that was pliant around the links as well as soft enough to tug while wrapped around your hands. Nor would it have worked by using pliers to pull the lengths, you would not have been able to do a hard enough tug even with pliers. So for the tough as hell links, it's still possible with this method, just have to modify it a bit. Even with that, you may need several of your best tugs to get it. I'm stoked I could get the link off without having to order a tool, thanks a lot!

This looks like it will work with links that are not jammed in but the reason people buy pliers is because of the force you need for links that have been jammed in by months of use. I found a trick for jammed links which is to insert a thin screwdriver or Allen key in a link above the K link and back through the other end of the link such that there is leverage against the end of the link. It’s very powerful and will open any link instantly. I can’t describe it exactly in words but it will only take you 1 minute at the most to work it out.

@trenvert1236 жыл бұрын
. I tried it using a drawstring. It's pretty thick, so I could get the leverage I needed to really pull. But I've found that as long as you use the right technique it should come off fairly easily. I'm also using a KMC link. The technique lies in thinking about how the chain removing pliers would work. They exert force mostly parallel, and by following this video, you will end up exerting more perpendicular force than parallel force. So I use thick string, since it's more supple, then I position the quick link vertically, then pull the strings in opposite directions. Since the quick link is now vertical instead of horizontal, the force will be parallel to the orientation of the link, and it should come apart much more easily. *tldr:* Orient the quick link vertically, then follow his method using a thick string.

HOW TO BUT IT BACK TOGETHER
@garethrobinson22755 жыл бұрын
For those having trouble connecting the newer links (ten speed and above are TIGHT!) First join the link together as far as you can. Then wind the chain around so that the link is between the cassette and front chainring (on top). Finally give the pedal a good shove whilst holding the wheel, you can even do this with your foot if needed. The chain tension will snap the links into place.
