With the advent of removable master links (quick links), we can easily remove a chain for waxing or cleaning. However with todays 11 and 12 speed chains, removal of the link is not easily done as was the case with 9 speed and some 10 speed chains. Here's where a master link tool comes in very handy. How many times you can remove and replace the same master link is debated as we mention in the video. Remember to replace the master link when you replace the chain.

I already own a set of snap ring pliers. Will they do the job?

There are a number of videos on ways to remove master links without pliers BUT none of the techniques work. However, if you use a Wipperman Conex master link of the same speed (9,10,11 or 12), these are easy to remove and re-install. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6eXpmymoNV8pNU&ab_channel=TonyMarchand It might run a little noisey but works on most (but not all) chains. They are not expensive and may be worth trying. Another alternative is to use a "mini" master link pliers which can be carried with you. I waiting for several and will present them in a new video soon. They range from $6 to $32. Which is better. We'll see in the video. Thanks for your inquire and hopefully the above will help. Regards, Tony

FYI: After snapping the master link in place, be sure to check each side to insure that the pins are fully engaged.

Great comment. Yes, check both sides of the master link to insure that the pins are fully engaged. Thanks, Tony

There are other master tools out there, but this is the one I prefer. Be sure to check that the master link is engaged on both sides (pins have moved into the correct openings in the master link) when you've finished. Regards, Tony

Why remove the chain for cleaning?
@tony10speed4 жыл бұрын
If you're waxing the chain, it's a necessity. Some individuals remove the chain for cleaning (although I do not myself). It's also easier to remove an old chain at the master link then use a chain breaker when replacing a worn chain. It's all a mater of personal preference.

Beware! There are master link pliers on the market that do not have the capability snapping the link into place. Why buy a tool that won't do both? Thanks for the video.

That is true. One must make sure with what ever master link tool you're using, that you check both sides of the master link to make sure that the pins are fully engaged. Regards, Tony

Are there other tools available for master link installation and removal?
@tony10speed4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Some require separate tools for installation (from KMC) and another tool for removal(from Bike Hand). Both are great tools if you don't mind the extra money to purchase both. However, the combined tools I've tried (from China) do not work half as well as the Park tool MLP-1.2 (and there are many manufactures copying this tool). As I always say: "The right tool for the right job."
