DIY home owner here: This is the first video of many that I've watched that explains that the water supply pipe, if threaded on the outside of the wall, is also threaded inside the wall and thus, can be removed by simply turning it. I needed a shorter supply pipe due to a new toilet that didn't have room for the old long pipe coming out of the wall, and this video helped me understand the mechanics! Thank you @FixitPhil

I have a stuck anode rod. I’ve crushed the nipple threads on the outside with the pipe wrench and I cannot get that pipe out. Will this work on that?
@FixItPhil5 жыл бұрын
I think so, as long as you get the right size internal wrench that will fit the rod, you should be able to apply the torque needed to free it. It's effectiveness will depend on the amount of clearance you have and whether you have enough room to be able to grip the tool with a wrench to turn it. Hope you're able to fix your issue!

Great video. Is best practice to replace the galvanized pipe with another section of same-length galvanized pipe, a dielectric pipe, or solder a male fitting to copper pipe?
@FixItPhil5 жыл бұрын
When connecting or joining piping, it's always a safe bet to use like materials. So if your existing/remaining section of piping is galvanized, then you could replace the broken section with galvanized with out a problem. Never mix copper with galvanized, as the zinc used for galvanizing will enter a chemical reaction with copper that corrodes the joint and eventually cause it to start leaking. For this, yes, you can use a dielectric pipe fitting to make the transition. You can also transition to PVS or ABS plastic from galvanized without any issues. What you choose to do will depend on your application and what properties you are looking for in the replacement pipes (e.g. cost, flexibility, durability, look -- if the pipe is exposed, etc.).
@donaldlee67605 жыл бұрын
@@FixItPhil - thanks FixItPhil. The entire run inside the wall is all copper, except the final 3 inch galvanized nipple sticking out the wall and threaded into a 90 degree (brass?) fitting. I think I'll replace the 3 inch threaded steel nipple with a 3 inch threaded copper or brass nipple.

How much cost will come for this product? Is this will be available from our nearly electrical shops?
@FixItPhil4 жыл бұрын
The cost is about $10 for a set of 3. I got mine at Home Depot, but most plumbing stores will carrying something similar. Electrical stores might carry something like this, but it's more commonly used for plumbing pipes than electrical.

That's great, but what if it's stuck ? The nipple won't turn, and you're about to twist the next pipe. Will this keep the pipe from twisting, and breaking ?
@FixItPhil6 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately if you can't get the nipple to unthread from the pipe behind it without also twisting that pipe, then unfortunately the tool won't work in that situation. You may need to open up more of the wall to see what's going on or as a last resort, cut the pipe.

How can I take it out the tap. Because nut thread is gone. I need the change wacher.
@FixItPhil4 жыл бұрын
You can try using two pairs of channel locks, one to hold the pipe nipple with the threads and one to twist the nut on the tap which has been stripped. Just be careful when doing this because channel locks can sometimes cause the pipe to break. Worst case, you'll have to cut the existing pipe and weld on a new section.

Is this effective in broken piece of the pipe? I broke my pipe and the other piece got stuck inside. Reply asap thanks!!

Yes, you should be able to remove the broken piece of the pipe that is still stuck in the wall, as long as it contains the remaining threaded end.

For bathroom sink ....metal wallpipe broke ...how do I remove it from stub out ...it may have been glued because it's not coming out or turning ...where the threads meet
@FixItPhil4 жыл бұрын
Hm, that's a trickier one because the thread may be sealed from sediment buildup, or as you indicate, glued with thread locker when it was installed. If that's the case you may need to heat the pipe with a heat gun or torch to break up the debris. Worst case the pipe will have to be cut and re-welded. If any of that sounds beyond your capabilities I'd call in a pro plumber.

Nice video tip here :-) Any other way from outside when inside is not accessable? I tried wrench over rupper but the rubber ripped and scratched the chrome finish.
@FixItPhil4 жыл бұрын
Are you planning on re-using the pipe/nipple if you can successfully get it off? If not, you could cut the pipe so you have access to the inside, use the internal tool to remove it, and then replace it with a brand new piece. You can wrapping the pipe in one or two layers of duct tape to see if that can give you enough grip to put some torque on the pipe. Otherwise, I think all the external gripping options will likely damage the finish.

How to remove the old trade which was broken inner side.
@FixItPhil4 жыл бұрын
If it's broken within the wall, I think the only way is to open up the wall and see how the plumbing is arranged. If it's a copper pipe you may need to end up cutting and soldering on a new section of pipe.

A GI nipple of 3/4" is struck inside a wall fitted to a GI collar.It is rusted and very tightly fitted.When tried, it didn't come out .Since it is deeply inside a wall finished with tiles, I am afraid that by still trying hard, the pipe inside wall may break leading to further problem.So how to remove the nipple.I tried rust removers but no help.In the video,the pipe nipple is almost at the surface of wall tiles,suppose it is 2 to 2.5 inch deep inside wall fitted to a GI collar, when tried,the whole collar and pipe may break inside wall but nipple only won't come out, in such situation how to remove nipple only.
@FixItPhil6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like for your situation you may have to end up opening the wall. I know that sounds like a pain, but if your plumbing system is old and fragile this is the only way to ensure that if something breaks while removing and replacing the nipple, you'll have the opportunity to fix it. If you're uncomfortable doing that amount of work I suggest hiring a professional as DIY home solutions may not meet your needs or concerns.

I have that tool but can't get it to work. The nipple thread is broken off in the elbow in the tiled ceiling. This tool won't grip it.
@FixItPhil6 жыл бұрын
Hm, if you're working on one end of a broken elbow it sounds like you need to rotate in a different direction than this tool would offer. That is the tool can only grip the pipe along the direction of rotation needed to unscrew the pipe. In an elbow situation you would need to rotate across the axis at 90-degrees. In this case it might be possible to stick a screwdriver into the broken end of the pipe up to the bend then use it as leverage to rotate the pipe in the direction needed to unthread the end still connected to the rest of your plumbing.

Can you use the same tool to tighten it up again?
@FixItPhil5 жыл бұрын
No, because the teeth grip/lock only when turned counter-clockwise. When tightening and turning clockwise, the teeth will "slip" and won't allow you to tighten the pipe.
@miguelmendoza81275 жыл бұрын
FixItPhil so how can I tighten it up without messing up the threads?

Just tighten the nipple by hand as much as you can, then thread on the valve to finger tight. Finally, use a wrench on the valve to tighten both at the same time.

When it comes time to install a new nipple, how it the world do you verify that it *will* not leak inside the wall (where the nipple screws into a drop-ear elbow inside the wall)? And when the whole faucet or valve or whatever is installed, how do you verify it *is not* leaking inside the wall?
@nathancernovich55096 жыл бұрын
You can check the shower valve for leaks by turning on the water to the house before you close up your access hole. As far as the connection to the drop-ear elbow, use a decent amount of thread tape and make sure it's screwed in tight. I guess if you really wanted to be sure, you can cap off the shower arm, turn on your shower (no water should be running since you capped it), and go look at your water meter to see if there is any flow.

Depending on how much of the pipe is exposed, this may not be possible, or if only the threads are exposed, gripping and twisting them could damage them, the internal pipe wrench is useful for folks that might want to reuse the part.

@FixItPhil6 жыл бұрын
Are you saying the tap cannot be removed? Or that the pipe nipple itself is broken? The tool should work on a broken piece of pipe still stuck in the wall (unless you cannot access it). But if you cannot get the tool inside the pipe nipple because the tap cannot be removed, you'll have to saw the tap off first, then use the tool inside the remaining length of the pipe nipple.

Lol, I can assure you it was super stuck. You'll notice I'd already changed the left one when I filmed this video as that was the one that had the exterior threads break off; I tried the tool out on that first to determine if this video was actually worth creating (because it would have been less than helpful if it didn't actually work!).

I guess the only way this will work is if the piping has a pipe nipple installed on the tubing...unless they are all done this way (sorry...amateur plumber here).
@floki83823 жыл бұрын
That would be the intended use for it. Internal pipe wrenches are made for loosening or tightening a threaded connection. For your shower heads and some faucets, those should have a pipe nipple where this would be used.
