How To Remove a Switchboard

This video demonstrates safe removal of an old switchboard. Many installations do not have HRC fuses or circuit breakers at the meter box, although there are alternate ways to deliven the mains for electricians - all depending on your local lines company - not demonstrated in this video.

Its a lot different over in NZ in Australia we pull a fuse out from under the main wire coming in from the street pole

That’s one very rough meter box, l would agree with meechu633 that you did not prove that your meter was actually functioning, you don’t need mains to do this use one of the many pieces of gear you mentioned , for instance an ir tester will function perfectly well as a proving unit. Or add a proving unit to your gear line up, and until proven dead glove up, so easy to do. Thanks for doing your videos.

If you have to drill the the board, don't. Asbestos is not something to mess with. Stay safe.

What is the maximum kw a house take?

A typical home in New Zealand has a maximum current draw of 63A before the main mcb trips. Assuming the voltage is 240v (it commonly fluctuates between 230-240v), you can take a maximum of 15kW from a typical nz home.

As long as it is properly wrapped and sealed, your local city council rubbish dump (in New Zealand) should be able to accept the asbestos waste.

Better to use a multimeter on a live source then on the “dead” switch board don’t rely on your volt stick. Who knows the batteries could have died 🤷🏽‍♂️

Howdy there, this old asbestos switchboard was from the 1960s and the dwelling was rewired in the late 1980s. The cabling was in reasonably good condition compared to alot of houses in this era. Under Nz law, if wiring complied with a regulation at the date of install (historically), then it is regarded as compliant until modifications are made. Insurance companies more than double insurance premiums for houses with older wiring due to risk of fires, so it is an advantage to completely rewire a dwelling if it contains obsolete cabling that poses a risk of fire (ie Vulcanised rubber cabling, and cloth wrapped rubber cabling).

@@sparkydave thx so your power feed from a 3 phase transformer? I though I heard you mention the neutral so do they grounded that neutral at all? If you loop all those together like that don’t it over load the wires?

You cannot prove test prove on a delivened house, that's why electricians use multiple instruments to test.
