My Method is simpler...faster & Safe for the soil around:-------my last stump was 3 ft high, 18" across.....I drilled 6 3/4" holes down at least 4"...here ism the Real sustainable Safe method----I put 3-4 pellets of Water softener salt in each hole. then add water to each hole....3 days there were no more suckers running out from stump. several rain showers & a week later...stump almost dead...2 weeks..--------all dried out & then soil is safe, only the stump & Roots died, nothing else around it...:D :D

Just to be clear - hitting the dirt with your chain saw doesn't dull it really quickly- it dulls it instantaneously. If you touch the dirt for a nanosecond you might as well quit what you're doing and go sharpen your saw.

Best way that I've ever gotten rid of a stump after taking down a tree is to just dig all around the tree and break or cut the roots and push or pull the tree over and let the weight of the tree pull the stump out of the ground using the weight of the tree. Then dispose of it accordingly. Then either burn it, bury it somewhere else, or haul it off somewhere. God bless and have a wonderful day. 👍👍

I am a horticulturist and this works against what you are trying to do. Salt kills bacteria and fungi which is what you are trying to encourage to grow to break down the stump. I would use ammonium sulphate and potassium nitrate, both are usually available at most garden centers. Keep up the hard work.

What you’re saying makes sense. If you do a Google search for how to remove a stump naturally this is the most common method that is recommended by large seemingly reputable sites. I still wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t work. There are a lot of videos out there of people pouring salt on a stump and saying it will remove it but none of those videos have done a follow up six months or a year later. I’m going to show one way or another if this worked Apparently the theory is that the salt removes all the moisture first and then it rots quickly

You are correct that ammonium sulphate and potassium nitrate have a 'salt' index but do not contain sodium which is toxic to bacteria and fungi. Putting salt or rather sodium cloride on a stump would inhibit decomposition of wood.

Had a 6 ft diameter maple stump cut two above ground, added steer manure & dirt on top of it made a potato patch - grew potatoes for three years - stump is gone and I had good crop of potatoes for three years

I had an old oak stump in Louisiana quite awhile back. Came out daily for a week and poured a cup of diesel on it. On the 7th day I lit it off and it smouldered for the better part of a month. I eventually tried pouring water on it and it would just light back up. Two months later it finally died down after I covered it with dirt. Let a huge sinkhole afterwards that seemed to take forever to fill up. Got rid of the stump pretty good but annoyed the heck out of the neighbors 🤣

Good man. I've welded a 10 inch rod, onto a 7/8 inch spade bit. Now, about 15 inches long. Works good, in a large Zephyr drill ; the one with a D- handle. It's a beast. NO shortage of power, and its' over 40 years old. Anyway, i've killed about 6 stumps here in town, so far. People trim their shrubs, trees, and some even cutoff trees, at ground level. Few REALLY kill the stump ; so the cleanup work,is mostly on-going. Thanks, for the education. I use epsom salt, and very strong vinegar, 10 % acetic acid. Used kerosene and vinegar, on another stump.

Newer research from one of the Universities says "no holes on top" just put holes on the sides of the stump. Holes on top collects more ran water & encourages mosquitos to lay eggs in standing water than holes on the sides where water runs off.

Potassium = potash is what in root rot. Ammonia= nitrogen. Biomass for compost pile, cover with plastic and keep it wet once a month turn it over. Use your chain saw, plunge cut four or five slots east west, north & south. the dirt is for microbs

The issue with using salt is that nothing will grow in the soil for years and years ! Myself I pour gasoline on the stump and let the stump soak it up. This seems to work well and keeps the treatment to the stump itself .

I cut down a dead tree a year ago and used the drill and epsom salt method. It was a fairly large tree so I was not expecting much in a year. What I will say about the epsom salt method was that it dried out the stump and killed everything around it for the year and when I year or so was up I went and rented a stump grinder. I know it helped because I tried using the stump grinder on it when I cut it down and did not make much progress. A year late with repeated salt applications......it was not easy but was much better to grind out.

Good video. I may try that. I have burned stumps, and you must burn them all the way; otherwise, the remaining stump will be very hard and resistant to decay. I usually let the Fireants eat the stumps, but it does take quite a while. They eat below ground level also.

I tried this on several stumps. After years the salt ate the center (or deer did) but the actual original circumference remainder the same. Then you smash what is left and take it out in pieces. But the roots, if any, that were at the surface remain…..and will destroy your lawn mower.

If you drill the holes like you said and fill the holes with diesel/kerosene 2-3 times a week, as it is absorbed by the stump, for a few weeks, it will burn the stump roots and all. Then you fill the hole with dirt.

If you want something to decompose you need to increase bacteria growth. Salt drys everything so I don't think that does anything, probably just kills all the bacteria actually mummifies the stomp. Something like Humic acid and dirt would increase decomposition what ever is used to create mulch would work great for a stomp.

I fell a maple which was too close to the house about 10 months ago. I'm not in a rush so I just used a heavy axe to create many cuts and gaps. By now it seems the rot is starting. You say table salt doesn't work but rock salt does? From a chemical pint that doesn't make sense to me. Rock salt is essentially table salt (sodium chloride) with a few impurities added. Except maybe the bigger chunks are not getting dissolved and flushed away as finely ground table sound.

I live in a semi-arid area. My father and I were cutting down dead trees around an old building, cutting them up and burning them. To get rid of the stumps we soaked them with kerosene and the lighted them on fire. We went back a few days later and found that the stumps had completely burned up and the fire followed the bigger roots about 10 feet through the ground. So stump and root removal all in one.

Guys never pour salt in a garden or farming land because it will become useless for any kind of vegetation, plants, crops, whatever. And no, salt does not remove tree stump. Salt does kill a tree but does not remove it.

Best way is to drill holes all over the top. Then cover that and holes with Salt Peter which burns good. Cover entire thing with fresh cow manure. Let set one year. Then set the Salt peter on fire and it will burn not only the stump but the root systems too!

My tow behind grinder has a swing of 8 ft wide and can take stumps down 24 inches below the surface. I can take out a large stump in as little as 20 minutes for about $60. I typically go 8 inches below the lowest surface near the stump. Yet some people I know will screw around like this with chemicals and what not and the stump is still there 5 years later. Shop around and get a good professional with adequate equipment. Numerous times I've had to follow up dudes like this guy who didn't get the stump down deep enough. Salt? No way.

Work smart people. just like felling a tree in the direction you want, dig up the roots and pull or push it over and watch in amazement as every bit of carbon attached to those leaves pulls right out of the ground. I had a five foot diameter white oak that was unfortunately in the middle of the family room of my new house. I dug the basement around the tree pushed it over cut it up and then pushed the stump out of the hole. It was about eight foot around and didn’t fit in the bucket of my track loader but basement was dug and tree gone in two days

Rock salt is Sodium Chloride same as table salt. Also salting the ground insures that nothing will grow there until the salt is leached out of the soil.

Sawsall on all of the large roots makes for easy plucking with a chain and truck. I’ve always considered using a mushroom inoculation kit for my stumps. All that being said, nearly all damage to my 2038R is directly related to stump removal. The little backhoe especially. Not rated for root balls at all.

I'm a female but I have some advice on some smaller tree stumps that I've gotten rid of: first of all I dig down and scooped out most of the Dirt away from all the roots that are growing away from the tree. Then I took an electric chainsaw or/and an Axe and cut out all The Roots. Sometimes it'll pull out if it doesn't have a Taproot and sometimes I would get someone with a truck and a chain and pull it out. Boom. 💥💥 it didn't cost me a thing

I just removed a 28 inch diameter (not circumference) green ash stump out of my yard with a similar method. I spent a long time drilling 3/4" holes deep into the stump below ground level. There were about 2 inches between holes. I allowed about 4 months drying time then 1/4 rick of firewood burned on top got it 100%. Once the fire burns deep into the holes they get bigger and bigger until they meet. Without the holes a rick of firewood cannot burn 1/4" into the stump. They just do not catch on fire for some reason.

@@RockhillfarmYT THE NITROGEN is the key.....using the nitrogen-rich manure plus fertilizer will help greatly and the fact that it looks like you have the stump down at least 6" below grade is a good buffer from the salted stump. If salt was a plant deterrent, you'd never see anything green along our roads that get a lot of salt every winter. Salt is more of a fertilizer than a plant inhibitor. It's the wood that depletes the nitrogen, which is why hardwood mulch is such a good cost-effective vegetation barrier (to grasses and many weed types) in landscaping bushes/flower beds. At least that's what I see. Mulch does attract mold types and fungi (mushrooms) though. THe salt might attract wildlife, and deer love to lick/eat mineral-rich earth.

Look it up, adding salt is bad, if it were good it would be in commercial fertilizers. Nitrogen is needed for the compostiing process. Add the nitrogen and cover the stump with dirt and keep the dirt damp not wet and fertilize a little.

I have tried drilling a lot of 1/2 inch holes, I tried epsom salts. After three years the weakest part of the stump was the part in the soil. I life at high elevation environment. At the rate of decay it would have taken at least 6 or 8 years to really break down.

This is not my theory, it’s just what the Internet says to do. I think the theory on the salt is that kills the entire route system. Those roots will feed the stump for years otherwise I did a three month follow up and then I will be doing a one-year follow up

It sure will. That is, if you want to plant crops on it. The Romans use to salt the fields of their enemies so that nothing useful would grow on them. Salt kills all useful bacteria in the ground and robs potential plant life of moisture.

I have a tree that has grown under the foundation butting Directly up to the house. The house inspector said that it has cracked the foundation and of course will make it worse. (I don't live here). I have to find a quick way to kill the stump and roots.... helps

I wish there was an easy way to remove stumps. I rented a stump grinder to remove 22 stumps over a period of three days. I think my son and I destroyed the stump grinder. It was on its last leg trying to grind the last stump. The rental place told us stump grinders pretty much self destruct. I have tried burning stumps out. I burned one large stump for three days. Brought in three truck loads of sticks and limbs to pile on top. Even had a generator powering a box fan to blow on the fire. It looked like a blacksmith forge. But after three days I still had stump above ground. What I finally ended up doing was digging out around a stump about five inches below ground level. On a big stump this typically takes me about 30 minutes to 45 minutes. I purchase cheap chainsaw chains ( 3 for $21 ) and use an old 16 inch chainsaw to cut the stump below ground level. I usually go through two or three chains per big stump, but that is $21 per stump. I then level it out to ground level with dirt. I figure the rest of the stump below ground will eventually rot. It looks like the stump was never there. That has been the cheapest and quickest method I have come up with.

If one has a generator, bring it out to the stump with your corded 1/2" Milwaukee Hole Hawg and use a self feeding 12" auger bit of the largest diameter you can hang onto, depending on your strength, stamina and the density of the stump. You won't have to do so much pushing down, just hanging on for dear life.

I used Epson salt on a old red tip stump a few years ago. Not sure if I should have put more on it but the dang thing sprouted out and turned into a beautiful shrub. 😁. I'm going to try the hydrochloric acid on the new stump that I recently cut down. My wife won't let me get rid of the red tip. LoL 😂

Fisherman use SALT to preserved dry fish so.. what is salt going to do with dried tree stump?

I did this a year ago the salt killed the stump prevented any regrets whatsoever and seemed to dry it out and sucking it up but in the end I had to have it run over by a truck steer with a mulching head😂

Throwing dirt on Mesquite doesn’t work! Mesquite will only sprout new shoots and can be a pain later. You have to drill holes in the stump and paint it with Remedy. Plus you have to do it immediately because Mesquite will secrete a substance that will seal and protect the cut. Mesquite is a real pain but it does make a good Bar B Que!

looks like a salt lick for deer should be a great hunting spot beside getting rid of the stump.

I put a birdbath on mine and in 2 summers the stump is gone...

Potassium Nitrate is BEST -------- I wish eucalyptus were as soft to drill as your stump!

The best way is to let nature claim it. Go gather up some termites from other trees and fallen limbs and drill some holes and dump them into the stump

Pressure wash the stump, you can blow out most of the dirt. Let it get real dry, dig a small tunnel under part of the stump, and start a fire, pine cones are good fuel. Next you need to feed it air. I use a metal downspout with a small fan. It will burn it fast. A no-burn way is to drill holes, then pour a can of cream of chicken soup on it. sprinkle with dirt, cover with leaves and keep it wet.
