I might be doing this on mine. At the moment, I've disabled it in the MMI as I've noticed a faint scorched smell when starting the car from cold on sub 5 degree days. Thanks for the breakdown.

Hey my steering wheel is on the left? how do i remove this heater then?

I actually don't know but assuming the aux heater is in the same position, presumably you can just depress or remove the accelerator pedal in order to make sufficient space to withdraw the aux heater.

I can't seem to locate the wiring or amp fuse connection to the heater, can you identify where this is when the heater is in situ. Thanks
@Scott-vs9qq4 жыл бұрын
I suspect the fuse is one of the inline high current fuses on the front of the engine bay fusebox - 80A springs to mind but you'll need to check. They are held down with nyloc nuts if I recall correctly. I had already disconnected the battery so didn't need to remove the fuse. The wiring to the aux heater are the 2 large cables scewed onto it - you can see them disconnected in my video in the first few seconds. The live is tied up with red insulating tape. The earth wire is dangling behind the plastic trim - you can just see the brown cable sheath.

Whats the auxiliary heater used for I have pending fault on my scanner
@Scott-vs9qq3 жыл бұрын
Provides 1000W of pre heating to the vents when the outside temp drops below 5 degrees C. It doesn't really warm the car but does remove the initial chill quite quickly before the engine temps increases. Its debatable over whether its worth actually fixing it or not, but I don't like standing fault codes so wanted to see if I could sort it.

What does the aux heating do as on my vcds it says there's a code to do with it
@Scott-vs9qq4 жыл бұрын
There's two types of aux heaters, the common one is an electrical heating element fitted after the heater matrix in your ventilation system, just behind the stereo. Its a 1000W heater that basically warms your car when the ambient temp is low, instead of waiting for your engine coolant to warm up. (The second type are diesel heaters which I know nothing about!)

Does anyone have a link to a video or a guide for doing this on a Mark 7? I’m in the middle of removing my heater core from the car ATM and Haynes manual says to remove the aux heater to make disconnecting the tubes easier.

Hi Scott, what where the actual symptoms of not working? On my golf I only have cold air, either with Ac on or off. When changing to hot, works for about 3 seconds and then goes cold again 🤯 changed the thermostat, the senders, flushed the cooling system 3 times and still doest work. Any help would be appreciated.
@Scott-vs9qq3 жыл бұрын
Primarily, I was getting fault code: 00361-014 - Defective, which is related to the aux heater. Also, it designed to heat the air when the ambient temp is below 5 degrees I believe, and I wasn't experiencing this.

I understand (although not completely sure because I've never seen one) that its actually easier, because that plastic bar does not exist on the drivers side (in a left hand drive VW) but the aux heater is in the same orientation..

Is that a new aux heater? I can’t find them anywhere online at a reasonable price. Where did you get yours?
@Scott-vs9qq3 жыл бұрын
No, that's the original one I was removing so was defective. I ended up resoldering the resistors as per this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5vdkox8q9OCibc and refitting it. The fault codes were gone and it works a treat now. You can get them cheap on eBay but you'll generally find the same problem with them all.

There is a fuse for that. Look at the front of the box under the hood. There are a couple of bolted big fuses. One of them is for this shit.

I know - I just wanted to also demonstrate my laziness... I already had the battery disconnected so it wasn't really an issue.
@edstark444 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid! VERY useful! Honest question though, why don’t you just disconnect the battery while doing this work?
@Scott-vs9qq4 жыл бұрын
I did. I taped up the aux heater wiring because this was part of a few bits I was doing over a few days. I was reconnecting the battery each evening so I could lock the doors and the alarm would be active. I didn't want the wires touching (although not likely but not impossible) while the battery was reconnected. But if this is the only job, I would have just disconnected the battery and not worried about taping up the wiring.
@edstark444 жыл бұрын
Scott Ah right ok, gotcha! I have the same issue, my aux heater has gone ‘defective’ according to VCDS... My only issue with sourcing a 2nd hand one is that I’ll have no idea how long it will last seeing as these are notorious for failing. Rang up VW for quote on new one... £600+!! Do the revised versions not fit the mk5 platform?
@Scott-vs9qq4 жыл бұрын
@@edstark44 I've gone through 3 second hand ones, there's all dead on arrival. I've repaired 1 myself and it works fine. This guy @Canadacatalyst (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5vdkox8q9OCibc) does explain the resistors that notoriously lift off the board and generally just need to be resoldered back on - well worth a try. If this is genuinely outside the scope of what you can do, consider taking it to an electronics engineer (TV repairer - if they still exists). Otherwise, there are sellers on eBay that sell refurb aux heaters but the price is about £150...
@Scott-vs9qq4 жыл бұрын
@@edstark44 To answer your question, no the revised models won't work as they have the control module mounted in the dash as opposed to attached the the aux heater.
