Hi from Australia. You are a legend, everything you have done is perfect. The application of the sealant to the shims and inside of the spline hub is the correct thing to do, I even put sealant around the bolt threads if they are open to the oil inside the housing this stops the oil from wicking back out around the thread. I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for almost sixty years on trucks and earthmovers and i have been doing the same as you for many years and never had a problem with come backs. Two more comments, five stars to the camera person and I like the caveman impact wench.

Thanks for showing me how to change out these components. I just bought an 8N and presently am replacing the PTO shaft as it is easier than pressing out the bearing and seal right now. I have a service and shop manual for this tractor, but your helpful hints about the shims setting the pre-load on the wheel bearings are very helpful. Keep up the good work, Ya Old Hippy.

just rebuilt the hydraulics on my 8n since my last comment and it works great! Had to hone the cylinder out about .005 to smooth out the groves and installed a new piston but it doesn't bleed down like it did and it's very strong. Currently working on wire brushing everything and hope to paint it within a few weeks. This video was very helpful. Thanks again for taking the time to make it

Nice video. Wrap your teflon tape on in the other direction for a better fit/seal. This way as it is turned on it forms to the thread better. By placing the teflon on the way you did, it encourages the tape to start to unravel or bunch up and could cause a problem. My grandfather taught be that years ago.

You really should never use tape in a hydraulic circuit. Because of what you just mentioned and other variables could cause tape to enter the circuit flow and cause damage.

@@beckyschwantes5287 I always use thread tape on tapered threads , the problem arises when to much is put on and if the tape overlaps the the end of the thread. ALWAYS start two threads back from the end and two laps only.

We repaired many. Ferguson had the gaskets instead of using rtv sealant. We kept them in stock all the time when I grew up. Just no mess. Just goes to show you new not always better just more convenient. Can fix almost anywhere.

You are a very careful mechanic. I used to have a 9n Ford with a ‘Sherman’ loader and a rear grader blade. I rebuilt the tractor’s engine and started what would eventually be a successful construction company with it as my first piece of equipment. I retired a few years ago after forty years in the house moving/ excavating business ( many tractors, dump trucks, bulldozers, cranes and backhoes later ). I had done most of my own equipment repairs until late in my business years. It takes a lot to impress me, but you have ! Just be more careful in your operation of the little 9n ( it can kill you just as quick as any crane or bulldozer ! ).

We carved spoons and bowls right out side on the side of the mountain until we made enough money to buy our tractor.the tractor made it possible to take logs to the Mill and bring back lumbar to build our house and wood shop and blacksmith shop and chicken house. we don't have a car or truck our tractor is the only thing we have . we make very little money from blacksmithing and wood carving. But the tractor makes it possible to collect logs for free and rocks for free to continue building our homestead. Anyways thanks for sharing the good memories and the positive feedback

I had a strange reaction to this video, other than that I really enjoyed it. I recalled the smell of kerosene, which we used to clean everything, smell of the fluid, and the smell of Permatex from the times when I helped my grandfather and my uncles work on a '48 8N -- usually on a rainy day under a lean to. I also can still "feel" what it is like to be bitten by one of the brake shoe springs. Nasty! 😎 Interesting... Great work, by the way, and good advice, too. Thanks!

Thanks for this. I just bought a new to me '48 8N, and tho I wrench on everything from heavy equip, vehicles to airplanes, it never hurts read it in the manual and then see someone do it. Thanks for the tips on where you use your sealer and why, mainly the why. I do confess to be a bit more partial to my torque wrench and impact, but whatever it takes to get it done with no issues. Great work. Looks like you had a little water in your old hydrolick fluid. Check the breather to make sure it's in good condition and not split or cracked. Or it's your shifter boot.

Looks like your oil had some water in it. Old 8ns and 9ns used 90weight gear lube instead of tractor hydrolic oil to lube the trans and gear set and run the lift. Some times the two oils are not compatible and causes the sludge that you found..Replace your gear shift boot to keep water out of your lube.

I replace gear shift boots every year and keep 2 extra ones. Have home maded sheet metal shade covers witch help me during summer and keep rain of shifter boot

The I&T manual calls for 450 ft lb torque on the axle nut and a circular spring pin in the groove .

i put case of empty lite oil containers while in the cardboard box thru the table saw to cut the tops off...then as i disassemble a contraption o put the parts in , in order then reassemble py us9ng the containers in reverse...never will get used to metric (but it is a better system i am afraid)...Creator bless you folks...doug..(kanada)

I could tell it was the pump because it would take a really really long time to build enough pressure to lift the three-point hitch. And the hydraulic fluid needed to be changed so while I had the hydraulic fluid drained out I just went ahead and rebuilt the pump so it was right. It is not a very hard job to rebuild the pump but make sure you get the right rebuild kit I was not aware and have never heard anything anywhere I looked but there are two different kinds of pumps the way you can tell which one you have on the pump the valve that controls it where the linkage from the lever hooks in one has a fork and the other one has a round hole that the linkage goes in the one I have has the round hole but a lot of them have the fork on the actual valve on the pump so make sure to know what one you have. You can buy the rebuild kits from eBay around a hundred and fifty bucks if you get a higher quality kit it can be 350 they also have on eBay pumps that have already been rebuilt for not much more than the high quality rebuild kit. Anyways if you have any questions let me know

The pins on my 47 2N or leaking as well, Brakes on a 2n are a monster, I changed the axel seals with ended up being much more than I expecterd

That is unfortunate that the pins are leaking on your tractor. If you can do the brakes and axle seals I think you will have no problem fixing the Leaky pins

It sounds to me like that could be the piston that is located under the top lid which is under your seat.If that is the case that is not very expensive or hard to do. Search on KZbin troubleshooting eight in hydraulics.

Check the lift cylinder and piston. If you have the old 3 seal setup get the new piston and rebuild it. First you should open Up the Acceas panel to The hydraulic sump. See if you are leaking fluid from the safety valve at the pump

I removed the top lid off my 8n to work on the hydraulics and I can actually see the ring gear through a hole at the top I’ve never seen under the cover and I’m pretty sure it is not supposed to be that way. Am I wrong??

Did I miss the part where we replace the worn components of the hydraulic pump? I didn’t see if it was a gear pump or what. Did you use a rebuild kit? I guess this was all about the leaks at the taper pins and the axle seals and the cleaning.

It’s not a gear pump . He rebuilt the valve chambers. I Think I saw a new brass bushing. What I didn’t see was the servicing of the pump safety valve. Also you do not use thread tape in a hydraulic circuit

It's easy to fix There's three ways to fix it you can cut a piece of foam and put around the base which doesn't last long Or you can raise the vent two and a half inches using metal pipe or brass pipe fittings or you could put a hose bib on it and remotely raise it higher position

That is a good question that I do not know the answer to. But if you don’t know the last time the entire hydraulic system was rebuilt then chances are the entire hydraulic system needs to be rebuilt. I would start by rebuilding the piston. It is fairly inexpensive and really easy to do. And if that did not fix the problem then I would move onto the hydraulic pump. If you redo the whole system you know what you have at that point. And you know you will be back to 100% and you won’t be continuously second-guessing yourself. All that being said it does sound like it is the testing. I hope that confusing answer brought you some value and thanks for watching.When you get into it let us know what you find.

@@CarvingAPath I should add I bought this 8n tractor from someone that had it setting outside uncovered not being used for 15 years the hydraulic oil look like it had never been changed. it was a milky color. after I drained it there was thick slug at the bottom of the case. since it has been sitting for along time I think I will prob redo everything that way I will know its all good. dont really want to tare it apart again it if I only do a half way fix and find out some else is still wrong. Sounds like a lot of water got in it over that time it sat outside. I think you are on the right track with the whole rebuild everything idea. On eBay you can buy a rebuilt hydraulic pump for not much More than it cost to buy a good rebuild kit.Just a thought. Anyways let us know how it turns out

@@CarvingAPath finally finished installing the rebuild hydraulic pump and top cover cylinder and piston. Hydraulics work great! now theres another problem. I finally let the tractor warm up for the first time and after 10 minutes with the throttle bout half way the radiator sprung a big leak at the bottum so I shut her down. found the upper hose was extremely hot, the other hose was still cold. it had a new thermostat in it, dont understand why it apparently never opened causing the radiator to burst. ever heard of this happening before. also the amp meter isnt connected so not working. what wires connect to the amp meter to make it work. your advise is appreciated.
