This made me consider the hack job. Kudos to you for taking this on, but the chances of breaking something else trying to get this done are too high vs cutting some plastic out and applying duct tape and silicon

26:57 - Those special connectors made of plastic become brittle and erode over time due to the hot temperature of the coolant. What I did with my truck was, I removed the eroded connectors completely, cleaned the lines, and reinstalled the rubbed lines using the metal clips. I have not had any leaks since then, and I don't have to ever worry about eroding connectors ever again. It's been over a year now and still no problems.

Lol by the end of the vid his knuckles are bloody, the instructions got set on fire, the seats and steering wheel vanished, and the sun went down. 😂 Honestly would you recommend anyone doing this now that you've done it? The hack job is 45 minutes, looks and works factory. You're not botching a future sale of the vehicle you nitpickers. If anything, the new owner will thank you for paving the way in case it breaks again.

Great video effort Joe. This job is more that I would take on, but it's great to see what's involved in the non-hack approach. I am faced with this project in my 2004 LT 2500HD 4WD. Is your video vehicle the same? If so, what replacement evaporator and heater cores matched your vehicle? My shop is telling me the evap core for the gas model hvac does not work in my diesel's hvac system. If so, why would that be? I am having trouble finding an aftermarket that match's my OEM part no. Thank-you!

The hack is also time consuming but considerably less so. You basically take a grinder, dremel, sawzall, to the metal bar behind the glove box and into the HVAC module to remove the AC evaporator. only problem with this is you need to place the plastic you cut off back onto the HVAC unit and then mud/plaster and reseal it so the air will flow through HVAC the module again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/faXMdndspsahisU

Do you know anything about adding an a/c to this type vehicle I have a heater but no factory a/c. So far the only difference I've noticed is the blend door is vacuum powered and I have no max ac button on hvac control. Wires are ran from factory but just no evaporator. Any info would be appreciated

I've got an 02 LB7, with floor shift transfer case, so no center console, and the climate control is much simpler, so hopefully it won't be quite as big of a PITA. I've still gotta have the A/C Checked, and find out, if it's the evap, but not looking forward to this, if it is. Just got head gaskets, and 45%sac injectors, retuned, and kryptonite upper control Arms, so gonna have to do this myself, regardless.

How did you get the bolts off the evap core to put on the new evap core
@djentlemanjoe5198
@djentlemanjoe5198 2 жыл бұрын
I had to go to oreillys and find the right bolts, those bolts wouldn't come out of my OEM evap core. Any autoparts store should carry these type of HVAC bolts, it comes with a nut and has that E (backwards torx) drive head on it.

I recently bought my cat eye Chevy like yours and before i got it it sat for a few years and im pretty sure rodents got into the hvac system (it smells really really bad). I want to clean it out as best i can. Does the entire system have to come out similar to what you had to do, or would i be able to clean it out fairly well by removing the vent doors, as well as any vent canals i can easily get to and vacuum it all out?
@djentlemanjoe5198
@djentlemanjoe5198 Жыл бұрын
Try removing the fan itself, this is fairly easy to do and could be an area where these critters made their nest. to get the HVAC "module" out you have to take the dash apart and disconnect the bolts from the firewall side, it's not an easy job. I have the LT trim so to get the dash out I had to remove seats and center console. Despite what some of the comments say on this video I don't see how else you can remove the HVAC module without a dash removal. Once the HVAC module is removed you can separate it and clean all the valleyways that air is supposed to move through. I would reccomend getting brand new blend door actuators, AC Evaporator and a heater core just because these trucks are so old there's a decent chance these will go soon and you don't really want to have to touch this again.

@@xSpoOky_AmBuSh Try giving it a good yank inside and see where it might be stuck at, see if you can feel tension somewhere on the HVAC box itself and perhaps you'll find your issue. I had to give mine a really good yank to get it off. Double check and make sure all the firewall nuts are off, there are some neaky ones right behind the engine and under the insulation as well. @@michealrobinson9778 your actuators are probably stuck closed in the defrost only selection. You CAN recalibrate the system if you have the LT trim package with the digital HVAC control unit, but given the age this is probably wishful thinking. There are videos how to do that out here on youtube. You can replace some of the blend door actuator motors on the HVAC module without removing all of the dashboard

You removed a lot of unnecessary stuff to do that job. Steering column has to be dropped and you missed 2 bolts hidden behind the ac duct you access from the top behind the drivers side defrost ducts. There are videos here on KZbin that show the proper and easiest way to pull the dash.
