A spring-loaded thingy you poke in to release a part is called a "detent." It's one of the parts of an M16 that I used to have memorized when I was in the army.

"Detent" is correct! it's a standard English mechanical term. I wish more of these video guys who are often quite clever, would also learn and use the rules of correct nomenclature and then use the right terminology thereafter. It lets others know that you have a clue or two. (Simplified- "use the right word.")

I know this is an old video, however my 2004 f-150 ignition key has often refused to turn to start truck.. Question??? If I replaced the lock cylinder and kept the old key on keyring beside new key, would it allow the ignition to recognize the chipped key and start ????

If you do not have the keys you cannot drill out the detent and pull out without turning the cylinder to run position which requires the key or jamming something in there and hoping for the best.

You are so right.....a locksmith has two tools that will go down each side compressing the tumblers in and remove the inner tumbler unit without taking the outer casing out.

The Expedition is different. I have a 2008, and I searched everywhere for a video about it and found nothing. I'm going to do you all a favor her and tell you how I got the ignition cylinder out. You have to remove the collar around the steering column. And I also removed the panel under the column. Both easy, both have 3 screws. Then remove the black plastic ring around the keyhole which is part of the pats anti theft system. then you can see the hole to push up into, it's not exactly on the bottom, but rather toward the driver's seat about 7 o"clock looking at it from the side. I think I had to turn the ignition to the 1st click in order to push in the pin. The rest of this video is very helpful for the rest, thank you for sharing it!

I got the button pushed and can get some play but it is not fully released. Tried to lever it out and may have busted a bit the plastic cowling that the key enters first, and that prevents the shroud from being removed. I was way over-charged for replacing it and I wanted to verify that it had in fact been replaced. F250 2000

Omg, i just went to the car mechanic because my car alarm keeps going off randomly. They said the lock cylinder needs to be changed and quoted me 250-300 dollars. 125 for labor per hour. Charging one hour of labor for a 5 minutes thing

have a situation where i removed the key ignition cause when i went to start my 04 E250 van it skipped gears. So I took out ignition but the gear in the column needs to be put back to its original position. how do i set that to the right setting for the keyed ignition to match up? I tried several times but its not working In your video you can see the green plastic bushing inside those are the parts I'm referring to behind the plastic bushing is a metal like washer then the gear behind it, those parts are not in the right position how to i get it to the right position? Also the lock tabs on the green bushing are broke do i go to the dealer for these parts or will it work the way it is?

Sometimes that cylinder is a little sticky. I Just wiggled the key cylinder until i felt the pin push in. I made the mistake of loosening up the screws on the steering column covers, so the cylinder wss catching the cover, I finally realized it after 5 minutes of aggravation lol

One vital caveat that proved to be way more harm than good for me. If you are trying to do this without a key or a broken one. DO NOT TRY TO DRILL IT OUT UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING! I unfortunately fucked my shit up because the housing you would press an Alan key with if you could do it normally is way softer metal than the crome button.

Never drill out the bottom pin, You will not be able to remove the lock cylinder. Look at the tail piece, It is keyed. You will destroy the console. Call a locksmith. Or look up how to drill the cylinder so that you can turn the ignition so that the tailpiece is in the vertical position so that you can push the pin to remove it with no damage.
