This is how to remove grout and re grout tiles the easy way. Through the use of a oscillating multi tool with a grout removal blade / tool we can easily remove grout without damaging tiles and making very little mess. The tiles used to look dirty all the time as the grout had become brittle and started to crumble and fall out. This is how to fix this. Hope you enjoy the video and as always like comment and subscribe for more videos. #DIY #howto #billshowto

Good video mate, but next time emphasis on not getting the blade to far into the back of the grout so you dont risk damaging any waterproofing would be another useful tip. Make sure to check out the thickness of the tile first and make sure you dont go beyond this. While the new grout might stop water getting to damaged WP, it could easily turn disastrous overtime and you won't know till floors, wall, start to exhibit water damage. Not against regrouting at all, just understand the substrate behind your tile and take necessary precautions

You are officially my DIY hero LOL. I would never have thought to use the multi-tool. I've been procrastinating over this job for 2 years, dreading the thought of scraping the old grout. Thank you.

I'm removing last year's bad grout job the building management did in an apartment I'm renting. Giving my hands a break (I've got CTS), I came across your video. I'm so old school, I was doing it by hand with a razor blade--never thought about using a multi-tool. Glad I found this video. The job will go much quicker now. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the great video. I see that you recommend not cutting too deep if the old grout is still good. That means the new layer of grout is a bit thin. Is there a recommended minimum depth for the new grout layer to be strong enough? Cheers!

Good video, in addition cover the floor with a suitable cloth to minimise clean-up, once grout is applied wait at least 10-15 minutes for initial set, then clean off excess grout in a diagonal motion with well wrung sponge and rinse often in your bucket of water, when dry polish off haze...

Perfect timing and answered a very pertinent question for me. Very novice. First tile job in shower. Panicked when haze wouldn’t come off. Thought I’d scratched tiles. Used 50/50 vinegar water and massively pleased to clean the haze. Perhaps over exuberant cleaning started to pit new grout (post 48hr dry) Made decision to remove and redo. Using manual method as I don’t own multi tool and grinder makes me too nervous for damage. Question was do I need to remove ALL grout. Some areas I’m satisfied with. This video clearly suggests not. Also some areas that have ground down literally popped into a crevasse suggesting my initial fill coverage was unsatisfactory.

Looks great! Once the grout has dried i also use a grout sealer to waterproof wet areas like showers, reason being the grout remains porous. In newer homes where the shower has been sealed correctly before tiling you can get away with not using it but i find homes 20 years plus in age the job does not last well without sealing the grout.

Adds two more seconds to remove all the old grout just as you demoed so the new grout will have a more complete bond that’s less prone to cracks and thus mold. Go the extra minor effort for a more durable finish.

I do this for a living, and without question, if an angle grinder diamond blade will fit, there is no better way to remove. I use this multi tool method if it’s only a few wall tiles or hard to reach or in a corner. Expensive blades and not as effective. Unless it’s a big job I actually use my utility knife on the 1/16” lines when replacing those restaurant bathroom 4” or 6” tiles.

But for a DIYer with few reno skills and a very shaky hand, is a grinder perhaps too much? I've got a grinder already and am ready to go, but am pretty certain I will murder a lot of tiles in the process if I go that path.
@EatLeadTalibanLosers
@EatLeadTalibanLosers 3 жыл бұрын
@@rattus1baggus I'm doing this on my tile right now. I found a roto-zip 3.5 inch grinder with a diamond wheel works very easy and you have a lot of control since the grinder is small and light. The wheel fit right in my 1/8 inch grout line. I tried the multi-tool but it is larger to hold and skipped out a few time and scratched the tile. It also takes a lot longer and more blades with the multi-tool. The 3.5 grinder goes through the grout like crazy easy. Wear a respirator mask (with filters)with a fan blowing the dust out the window. There's so much bad grout dust in the air it will kill your lungs.
@Orrphan
@Orrphan 3 жыл бұрын
@@rattus1baggus floor tile grout is of course easier to remove with an angle grinder. Also exterior tiles and not having to worry about dust. I use water from a spray bottle while I’m doing tiles to keep the dust down but it makes a mess, but a lot of times now, I strategically hold my huge shop vac hose into the dust stream and it works well. Doing interior wall tiles, yes you have to have a fairly steady hand if it is a small grout joint, and if it is a 16th inch wide joint, using an angle grinder and diamond blade may be too wide. If you have 1/8” or larger grout joints I would definitely use the angle grinder and diamond blade and you can get just about anywhere except when you start getting closer to an existing wall. Also, if your tiles are staggered and the joints don’t lineup you would need to be careful with an angle grinder when nearing another tile. I do use this multi-tool technique for replacement of a few wall tiles or base tiles, but not large open area grout removal.

@@Orrphan I did tile 5 years now and have been wondering about these multi tool blades. I always used an angle grinder for replacing individual tiles but it does make tons of dust and needs a very steady hand. Thanks for the review on these from a professional instead if DIYer, I may pickup these because I do have a job to replace only 4 tiles and cannot afford to scratch them up as the customer is very picky... Have you ever tried a diamond burr on a rotary tool? I am also looking to find one with a mini router setup which may work better and be less messy. I do use a vacuum in combination with an angle grinder but no vacuum is good enough to catch all the dust. Perhaps also looking at getting some kind of shroud for the angle grinder tho it may be hard to see where you're cutting
