How to Remove and Retrofit VW 8 inch Discover Pro Head Unit 2017 MK7 Golf GTI R | FULL Unedited

In this video, I swap out the old 6.5" Stock head unit to the new 8" Discover found in the new VW models. (2018 and newer). For those who are interested, this is a plug and play modification that is straight forward swap IF you have a 2016 and newer GTI / Golf R. If you have a 2015 Golf, you have the older MIB 1 and need to retrofit the MIB 2 inside your glovebox as well.

Thanks for the video! Just want the confirm a few things: * Is this a 2019 Golf R? The title seems to suggest so, and I am surprised 2019 Golf R doesn't already come with the newer glass style 8" screen? * You mentioned you got a good deal on the trim bezel, how did you acquire it? * It looks like the bezel is not the satin black color (Golf R style) but more of the older GTI style with Carbon effect? Does the bezel have a Carbon-like look to it? I couldn't tell from the video. I have a 2016 GTI (MIB2, non-nav 6.5") that I am considering upgrading, and I am wondering if this bezel you have will fit better with my interior. The part number you have listed for the bezel seems to be the satin/gloss black bezel, and not the grayish color one you have. Thanks!

You are correct. The 7.5 comes with the new 8" glass screen. Mine is a 17 R. I acquired the unit through a private eBay auction. The trim that I have in my car is actually for a euro golf, I believe. Therefore it is more graphite than gloss black. (can't really tell the difference in person) 👍

Hi I stumbled into you channel a few months ago after getting another Golf R 7. 5 I was wondering if you knew if anyone made a full replacement dash kit to get rid of the black fingerprint,dust inducing trim? I've looked everywhere Alixpress has several decal overlay kit but not for the 7.5 models with digital cockpit gauges. Do you know where I might find what I'm looking for?

You will need to also retrofit the MIB 2 brains in the glovebox for this to work. 2016+ will have no problems.

Nah sorry unfortunately not plug and play. You will need the MIB 2 brains inside the glovebox too. Check the description for the contact to make this all happen if you're really interested

The 8” is called Discover Media, Discover Pro is the 9.25” screen. I have a 2019 Golf are with the 8” screen and I’m going to retrofit the 9.25” Discover Pro screen. Just waiting on parts.

The Amateur Retrofitter vwcarparts.com the part number for the screen is 5G6-919-606-B. you also have to change the control unit in the glovebox, that part number is 5NA-035-026-E. I recommend ordering from vw directly and not from a European seller. the European parts won’t have SiriusXM on them.

This doesn’t make sense. The MIB computer sits in the glovebox. You just swapped the screen.

You’ll notice in his other video how his screen still has the older-looking software on it. That’s because he didn’t change the hardware unit in the glovebox. It will work just fine since his car already has Navigation, it’ll just look older. If you’re swapping to the Discover Pro (the 9.25” screen), a hardware change is required. But you can get by with just changing the screen if you’re ok with the older-looking layout
