How to Remove Anti-Reflective/Anti-Glare Coatings on Glasses

The anti-reflective/anti-glare coating on my glasses had degraded over the last few years to the point where they were hard to see through.
It seemed that they were only good for the bin. However I noticed that I could scrape some of it off with my fingernails. The rest wouldn't budge.
After a bit of Googling, it seemed toothpaste and an electric toothbrush was recommended. So after a quick test that showed promise, here is a proper attempt to remove it fully from one of the lenses.
I've shown the full process on one of the lenses (on right hand side of video). It worked well! So will now apply to the other side - but I don't think you need to watch that one too...
Update: Glad to report that all worked well on both sides - and the visibility is as good as new!

I confirm it works with the toothpaste and the toothbrush. 2 pairs of glasses were fixed just now, and the vision is crystal clear. Thank you, and cheers!

I just used “goo gone” and it took the anti-reflective coating right off with ease. Then I rinse the lenses off under the faucet and wiped with a paper towel and they’re like new now.

@@geropubgm8565I just used goo gone and it worked!!!!!! Omg I was so excited. I soaked my glasses in it for 10 minutes at a time (2x). I then dipped a rag in hot water with some soap and scrubbed the glasses. They look brand new and super clear. No scratches or anything. I hope this helps you.☺️

I have an expensive pair of glasses that the coating had started to come off on both the front and back, soaked them for 10 min in isopropyl alcohol and salt and then used a plastic disc to scrape off the film on both sides, worked perfectly, takes a bit of effort but it is worth it, they are so much better now, just keep going and it definitely works

Rubbing only make more scratches. There is good way to remove coating of your glasses. Glass etching cream is perfect. Only spread it just 5~7minute. Perfectly coating will be removed.

Only use etching cream for plastic lenses. Use 90% Isopropal alcohol with a little bit of water for glass lenses, soak for a up to an hour, then use a soft plastic scraper to remove the anti-glare coating. Works perfectly.

I used abit of automotive compound to clean up any more scratches after removing the coating. Works good but can see where you missed when you do this.

There is a film they put onto glasses (usually cost extra) that reduces glare. This video is to help us remove the film.

I used toothpaste, mustard with vinegar, and salt water, and scratched the lenses but did not come off. What finally removed the coat entirely was the sink-unblocker. I left them 5 mins soaked in water and sink-unblocker and softly rubbed the coating off with a Qtip, then soaked them in baking soda to remove the acid. Use gloves for this one.

Q1, are the lenses plastic or glass?
@NeonWatermelonJoy
@NeonWatermelonJoy 2 жыл бұрын
Real glass I'd assume. As they weren't cheap when I got them. My eye sight is so bad that they need to be upgraded to the be the thinnest option possible. Hence I wasn't keen on replacing them just because the anti-glare coating was coming off.

@@NeonWatermelonJoy if they were glass or plastic they would be cheap and thick if they got thinnest they could and got you in the Butte on price then they would be polycarbonate

@@deanah3414 Yep, Zenni's are polycarbonate (even the $6.95 ones, great deal, been using them for over 10 years, love it, $23 total for 3 full glasses incl anti-glare/scratch in 2019).
