It's inevitable when working with any machinery that you will eventually encounter the bolt or nut that is so distorted that no conventional wrench or socket can get a grip on it.
Here's a quick, easy and foolproof method of getting these things turning with a minimum of effort and no special tools or equipment.

Worked in an automotive machine shop. Also on a nostalgia front engine blown injected Top Fuel Hemi. Another tip when you have multiple bolts or screws. Just "loosen" each one slightly, do NOT take them all the way out. Many times if you take them all the way out, it puts more pressure on the last one. If I knew from the look of them they might be a problem, rusty, worn, etc. I would loosen each one and slightly tighten them again UNTIL all of them had broken loose. Hope that this might help someone. Take care and all the best.

First comment should have read front engine dragster. Another tip, if you know in advance you are going to be tearing something apart. Put some type of lubricant on it a day or so before. This can give the lubricant time to "soak in."

I've done lots of seized bolt and nut extractions from tig weld building to heat and beat etc. A lot of times I work the bolt out like a tap in reverse. Back a half turn, in a quarter, back a half turn, in a quarter. And evenly as you said. You go in with brute force you'll just create a big nightmare.

I have a set also. RocketSockets and TurboSockets are both made by the same company called H.B. Products. Both made in the U.S. but I believe the only difference is the RocketSockets are their "commercial line" but no less in quality than their TurboSockets. You will find TurboSockets sold by various professional tool companies like Williams and SK. Both are very good as you said and can be used with impact wrenches as well. They are my last resort but they have yet to fail me. H.B. is also the original company to make these style of sockets and their teeth I've found last longer than other cheaper copy sets.

The first thing I reach for is valve grinding compound. Just coat the inside of the socket a little and it'll usually grip the fastener enough to get it out.
@legitmilkman98
@legitmilkman98 Жыл бұрын
Glad someone else said this since I don't see anyone else do it very often. It's also great if you're trying to break a bolt loose but you need both hands on the hammer while tapping the wrench to break it loose. Just coat a bit of the inside of the box end like you would and stick it on the bolt and the wrench will have enough grip to hold itself on the bolt on its own while you knock it with a dead blow. I had to do this for very stuck wheel hub bolts that thread in from the back.
@Isadore123L
@Isadore123L Жыл бұрын
For anyone unfamiliar with valve grinding compound, be ABSOLUTELY certain to clean it off EVERYTHING after. It is incredible how much the stuff can chew away metal. It has diamond-like carbide dust in a greasy paste that chews into any surface it rubs against.
@legitmilkman98
@legitmilkman98 Жыл бұрын
@@Isadore123L Agreed and thank you for mentioning that. I make sure to clean and wipe out both the wrench or inside of the socket and the bolt and surrounding areas with brake clean and a shop towel after. To apply heat to a rusted bolt in a spot where you can't use a torch, (no room for it or there's plastic nearby that can't be removed or whatever), grab a short piece of rebar or a bolt with a vicegrip and heat THAT red-hot with the torch, then hold the end of that to the bolt. I thought of it a long time ago while fixing a washing machine. The bolt that held the plastic agitator on was rusted and rounded off and recessed 3 inches in the hole. A red-hot chunk of 3/4" round bar pressed onto the rusty bolt for a half a minute was all it took to be able to ease the bolt out with needlenose pliers

If you are dealing with stripped out Hex or Torx bolts and can't afford the super expensive MAC RBRT extractor sets meant for those, grab the opposite bit that you're trying to get out. So say it's a Hex cap bolt that is starting to strip out. Reach for a Torx bit/socket that fits inside the Hex head and tap it in. The extra splines of the torx bit will bite in as you turn it and will turn the bolt out.

Great advice Tony. Haven't had to resort to that myself yet. But, I have for decades, owned 2 de-bevelled, 6 point sockets. A 3/4" for flex plate bolts, and a 1-1/8" for oil filter adapters. One method I've used successfully on a few occasions, is the old school hand held, hit the end type impact driver, (NOT rattle gun) with a 6 point socket. Stops it riding up the head, and in most cases gets the job done. Also have used the next size down, bash on method successfully. Excellent video.

The impact drivers that you hit with a hammer are definitely good, applies the force in two directions at the same time, plus you can use them for screws as well as bolts. Sometimes you can free a bolt by tightening it slightly first which overcomes the problem with rounded corners. Lastly there is of course the spray can whether it be lube like CRC or wd40, there's even a freeze spray which shrinks the metal slightly and breaks it loose.

A hammer and a solid, flush grinded hex wrench. Impact driver loses grip in every impact due to the motion of the impact gear. With a hammer and a wrench, you can keep the wrench in place with one hand, and tap the bolt/nut loose with another. My go to method for every situation where it is possible to fit a wrench. Works for old brake bleeds as well as manifold bolts, oil bungs, chassis bolts, steel bolts threated to aluminium etc. In your case, I would've tapped each bolt head with that tool you used to loosen the grinded bolt. This method kills the bolt head, but flex plate bolts are single use items anyways.

Good stuff. I also have a couple of ground-off sockets. Also, my ancient Williams 1/2-inch drive socket set came with 19/32 and 21/32 sockets, which have solved a few of these problems in the past.

Coincidentally, I am trying to get the FILL plug out of the rear end housing on my 2001 Ford Expedition. Normally you would use a three-quarter inch extension. It is rusted in there so bad the square is starting to distort. I can get a hex head socket tapped in with a hammer. I soaked it in PB Blaster and I'm going to let that sit overnight and hit it with some heat tomorrow. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Old toolmaker trick, shock thread loose by a sharp blow to the bolt head. Another is to use a centre punch furthest out on head and hammer forcefully on the punch at a 45* angle. This is great on flathead screws

It's pretty amazing what just a little light tapping with a ball peen hammer, some pennetrating fluid, then some more tapping for half a second. Have a beer. Then, try to remove the suspect bolt. You dont have to drink the beer, but it does make things easier and gives me a headstart if the process doesn't work the first time.

I’ve also been successful using a hand file and slowly and evenly filing the sides into a smaller fully intact head. Only works when you have the room, and the patience.

The problem is mostly ROOM TO SWING THE HAMMER. I just broke down & bought specialty sockets made for that kind of stuff.

Exactly..usually there is no room for hammers, pipe wrenches, vise-grips, or even the thick extractor sockets...and often heat from a torch or welder will burn/melt/damage something close to the fastener that cannot be removed...

A new "luxury tool" that I've found for nuts& bolts is a tool called: An induction heater. Look this tool up, they are awesome especially in sketchy areas where using an open aint a good idea, like bed bolts right next to gas tanks, or in this case with flywheel bolts. The wire attachment rods are flexible enough to make tight bends in tiny areas. 👍🏼

I love me a good "turbo socket".....the ones with the spiral flutes and the passthrough for the stud. They work fantastic.

Good Methodologies... Grinding the socket DYI modifies it to Snap-on "Flank Drive" status and they fail too as shown...sometimes. For me for now IMO those electric bolt heaters are hard to beat...If you can get em in there. Safe too compared to a smoke wrench. Gearhead better know 9 different methods cause in time he'll use all 11 of em.

The service manuals all say to not reuse those flex plate bolts, or any hardened bolts for that matter, but everybody does. For a short time, Craftsman sold some US-made sockets that had severe angles in them, that were supposed to better grab rounded hex head bolts. I think they had some falling out with the patent holder and quit selling them after a short time. I saw them advertised in a British car magazine once, under another name, but I was never able to find them again.

I have several I have grounded off the bevel for more bite. But if that bolt has bottomed out. The clamping force is at the bottom and wedged into the threads. Just waiting for you to snap off the head of that bolt if not careful. Then the fun begins. Its all a leaning process. Seems those bad experiences you never forget.

Tony-Great idea about removing a good part of the head of the bolt. Just a quick question though. While cutting the head, did the cut-off wheel mar the flex-plate at all? I love the idea that these cut-off tool's are very versatile but would that be a problem if it dug into the plate. Love your video's. Please keep them coming!!

It's often not the tool that is the issue but an inexperienced user. You have to know your skill level and grow your skill set - until you reach the level that Tony is at. That being said, IMHO this is the place that a diamond edge oscillating cutter would work pretty well, and greatly reduce the risk of hitting the flex plate.
