Fast forward 9 years to Jan 2024, this is still sound advice. I did the shoe pressing against the box wrench thing, a stubborn pedal came right off. A pedal that I had been struggling with for a half hour to remove.

I don't usually post on KZbin but felt I needed to make an exception. I stopped cycling about 2 years ago because I couldn't remove a stiff pedal. I bought allen keys and a wrench, watched tonnes of tutorials, but just couldn't get the damn pedal off! After hours of trying I gave up, and my bike has been rusting away in the garage ever since. I think that many of the other videos showing how to remove bike pedals already have the pedals at least somewhat loosened and therefore the pedals are not really, really tight (or stubborn). So they are not really demonstrating how to remove the pedals in a real- world situation (like if the pedals are rusted and have been on the bike for years). Thank you so much for this video omg. I did this on a stationary bike I was taking apart but as for that I figured that u have to hold down the emergency brake as u step on the wrench so that the pedals don’t spin.

Hi. Can I assume the same method will work on the other (not chain side) pedal? ie. Wrench pushed in exactly same direction downwards? Many thanks

Yes. Same exact direction. The reason being that the right side pedal has common right handed threads that everyone is familiar with ("righty-tighty, lefty-loosey"); but the left side pedal has opposite (and not so common) left handed threads, in which case are also "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey". So rotate BOTH pedals in the SAME direction to loosen (backwards from the front of the bike). I hope this makes sense. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Wow! Wow! Wow! I have been wrenching away all night on a rusted exercise bike pedal 'thing' (shows what I know about bikes). Had almost thrown out my whole right side core yanking as hard as I could. And nothing. Then tried this and-kaboom! A turn! Pedal and pedal thing is now out and we are halfway towards a repair (now to find a replacement that fits). THANK YOU.

Thank you very much!! We are shipping my son's bike and could not get the pedals off. We were ready to take it to the bike store. My husband did spray AeroKroil oil "that creeps" into the joint first which probably helped but without your technique, we could not get it to loosen. Great! video.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are trying to teach my daughter how to ride her bike while in quarantine. I told my husband that one website suggested removing the pedals and lowering the seat so that your feet can be flat on the ground. Then, you scoot your bike with your feet to get used to balancing it. And when comfortable with that, you put the pedals back on. He said "how do you get the pedals off". He tried with a wrench and said "they are on too tight". So I googled it and your video came up. I went back out, got at 5/8 in. wrench positioned it as you did in the video and stood. It didn't budge at first but when I put "ALL" my weight on it, it worked!!! See, moms can do things better than dads sometimes!!! The other pedal came off in the same way, stubborn at first, but "all" my weight did it! Thanks for the video, hopefully this is the trick!

She did it!!! Got super comfortable coasting without the pedals. I easily put the pedals back on and after about 5 tries she was riding! It was awesome!

The Adventure Biker Left pedal was righty loosie. Right side Lefty loosie. The funny part is Im 48 and forgot but I can build a 950 horsepower engine. Or build an 7.50 tube chassis! Lol! Been a long time since I changed a pedal!

Haha that's why instead of saying lefty/righty loosie I said rotate both the left and right spindles backwards to loosen. Hope that made more sense. Don't feel bad man. I had a friend here who fully restored a 1967 Chevy Camaro SS 396 convertible from the ground up all by himself. He basically hand-built a numbers-matching car from the chassis up, and did an impeccable job I might add (the car has been featured in a couple of enthusiast magazines and has won awards at shows). This same guy would take his mountain bike to me to have the derailleurs adjusted when the gears didn't shift correctly.... I never fully understood that. LOL

I’m that same guy. Those derailers are maddening. I’ve built 3 show winners myself. A 69 Chevelle, a tubbed 72 olds that runs 9’s and car shows, and last year a 91 Z28 Camaro, but I’d be having you fix my derailer too!
