you actually dont need to take off the plastic trim inside the spare wheel well. Maybe the right side piece to get the battery cover out of the way? but the plastic up against the rear (where mine had torx bolts on it) does not need to be removed. There are small access doors that pop off and allow easy access to all the bolts. 01 740i

Do you have to take off the shock absorbers and put them on a replacement bumper?

Yes. If your new bumper does not have the shock absorbers or the aluminum brace, you will need to transfer them over to the new bumper.

If you're listing on ebay, check the part numbers on realoem.com for compatibility with E39 540i and E53 X5. Listing with all compatible vehicles helps items sell. I still have some parts left, but should be well over $5k when they're all sold.

There is absolutelly no need to remove the big black plastic cover inside the trunk to acces the bumper bolts
