This applies to all dodge ram 2010 through 2018 with broken exhaust manifolds studs. This can be done by anybody but it does take a lot of patience. And doing so it will save you a ton of money in the long run but if not done right this can mess up your cylinder heads if not drilled out properly.
Tools used:
10mm socket
13mm socket
18mm socket
1/4 & 3/8 ratchet with various extensions.
Jack & jack stands
Drill bits used: amzn.to/3zfs2yp
Extractos used: amzn.to/3aONqhc
Manifold studs: amzn.to/3lHxWW2
Manifold Gaskets: amzn.to/2YrpBak

As an old tool and die maker I particularly liked the left handed drill bit. I used to make them from drill blanks as needed. Very nice touch.Most people are not aware that you can buy a set of left handed bits. I have my truck in the shop with its 4th repair of this problem. I have heard that some after market headers will solve the repeated repair as they will not warp and snap the studs.

Dude, thank you so much this is gold for me. I have a 14 ram 1500 bought used and found out it had the factory air suspension (Didn't know air suspension in a truck was a thing). Ripped that crap out entirely and replaced with mechanical suspension and while I was under there my exhaust manifolds caught my eye and I stared at them for about 10 seconds...took a deep breath and kept working on my suspension. Almost sure I'm going to have to do exactly this. Thanks again!

Nice video saved me a ton of time and worked like magic. Extracted three bolts in about 10 minutes. Reading come of the comments below I agree the warped manifold should be replaced or re surfaced. However, the new manifold is going to do what it does and warp. Also do does not delete the Heat shield. This is to protect the valve cover and just above that the spark plug coils. Finally, if you did not use the torque sequence for future reference, start middle and work in a clockwise pattern inner bolts first then outer bolts.
@gordbaker896
@gordbaker896 3 жыл бұрын
Great job. Always use a straight edge across the Manifold ports to check for warpage which puts added stress on the bolt heads. There is a specific tightening sequence for the bolts and the torque setting is 18 Foot pounds!

I used a mig welder to tack on a 5/16 nut. Worked very well even on the bolt that was broken ~1/4" below the surface of the cylinder head. I was afraid it might damage the aluminum threads, but it didn't. I just hit it a couple times with the welder just until the nut was tacked on and then carefully turned it out, turning back in a bit if it started to bind. I was amazed how easily they came out. I had been dreading that part and couldn't get my drill to line up to drill it out without buying a right angle drill.

Nice video with a great use of the proper tools. I would advise against putting the old manifolds back on. If you take a straight edge to them, you'll see they are warped badly, which causes the bolts to break and the leaks to start in the first place. Unless you can flat mill the entire engine block side of the manifold, you're really only setting yourself up for having to do the job again. Dorman manifolds are $80. Good insurance.

I took mine to a machinist who flattened them out for cheap in his garage shop. Said they were very warped. Which IMO is better than buying new because the heat cycles that caused the warping in the first place has already taken place and shouldn't happen again after machining.

Excellent camera work! Yes, the 4.7 has the same problem. I'm really surprised that Chrysler wasn't in a class action law suit because this problem went on for several years. At the very least there should have been a recall due to the potential of exhaust gases getting into the cabin. If you have a broken stud before beginning the job there is a good chance that the manifold is warped. You can check it with a straight edge and if you're really good with a file you can true it up or you can take it to a machine shop or just buy a new one.

I keep seeing everyone posting in the comments about this, once you pull the manifolds off, send them out to be machined. The heat causes them to warp and that is what breaks the bolts. Once they have been heat cycled they will no longer warp. Get them machined and they will not leak again. I see people replace them with brand new manifolds and a year later they leak again. This is a cast iron manifold with an aluminum head. They expand and contract and different rates.

Hey, tool your advice, but got a little blessed. All of mine came out, but one was broken. Got the tool you recommended and got it extracted. One thing I have to say about the 4.7 is that the exhaust manifold and gasket is different from this one, but the studs and screws are the same. Lol, I went to the auto parts store and they didn’t show any studs or screws for the 4.7, but I asked to see the ones for the 5.3 and they were an exact fit. Looked on a Dodge forum and they confirmed the studs and screws are the same across the different engines, however, the gasket screws, manifold and manifold gaskets are different. Again, thanks for the video. Helped me out a ton!!! God Bless

Trailblazer Films Thank you very much for your response. Out of 5 broken bolts, I have only gotten 1 out successfully. This isn’t the easiest of jobs. Nonetheless, you did a very good job walking your viewers through the process. It definitely gave me the courage to tackle the job. Thanks again.

Nice job, great video. I have a 2015 Durango with the 5.7 hemi, similar problem. Copied the gasket/bolt numbers you have but amazon says the bolts do not fit my truck. I would think they are the same hardware, no?

Yeah it’s the same man no difference. Amazon has a tendency to say some items don’t fit some make & models when they do. Thanks for watching & the support. Please make sure to subscribe!

Dealer told me the headers usually need to be replaced as they will be warped, I hope they are relatively flat but will try your trick to sand them thanks

Never seen or heard these headers warped on these trucks. If anything maybe they would crack before they warped. Hope to sanding works for you. Thanks for watching.

Those bolts that broke came out very easy and were not rusted in much. Be warned people you are very lucky if you can remove a broken manifold bolts this easy. The job can become a night mate if you drill wrong or snap an extractor. Use a pro trust me!
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 3 жыл бұрын
This is true a broken extractor will make life hell & making sure to drill down the center is very crucial. There are water jackets around these exhaust ports.

The concept should be the same but not sure bout how much room there is between manifolds & wheel well to stick a drill in there.

the issue is for 2006 to 2012 with 4.7 and 5.7s the bolts in the manifolds are too small to support the cold to hot and hot to cold cycles

exact same thing happened on my 5.7 hemi 2004 model, both bolts both sides. But mine nneded a nut welded on the head to remove them. They were rusted in with thread locker. One bolt took 7 hrs to remove.
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 3 жыл бұрын
Yea unfortunately sometimes it comes down to welding a nut to the end of the broken stud. Wow 7hrs! That’s crazy but I’ve seen some take that long also. Thanks for watching

If I have a exhaust manifold leak on my passenger side can I just replace the bolts, or do I need to buy the whole manifold kit?
@JJBanuelos

Just the bolts. Don’t worry these headers are rarely cracked or warped. 99% of the time it’s the bolt bolt(s)

Do u have to replace the manifolds or can u just take the bolts off and replace with new bolts and put the old manifold back on
@JJBanuelos

You can just replace old bolts & keep same manifolds just as long as they are not cracked or warp.

I checked on the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 I own and the srivers side the heat shield loose and broken exhaust bolt is stuck in it. I wish Hemi's would come with thicker exhaust bolts like older V8 engines. At least I can probably get the broken out with vice grips.

Is it safe to clean the mating surface with sandpaper, due to them being aluminum?
@JJBanuelos

Yeah it’s okay I wouldn’t go to crazy but getting some of the old gasket & junk off the flat surfaces shouldn’t harm anything. I’d use it by hand & not a drill to be safe

Use a slow rpm and heavy forward pressure with a left hand drill. You want the drill to grab and dig in, not peel out chips.

Well I’m trying to fix this issue on my Charger Pursuit and having all sorts of issues manifold flange bolts broke off and I’m pretty sure I have a broken bolt stuck in the head on the passenger side rear on the bottom side. The problem with the Charger is you can’t take the inner fender off since it’s all metal to access like on the Rams. Also the main reason these bolts break like this is from the manifolds warping. I’m going to be putting shorty headers on when I finally get everything ready for them but I may end of having to pull the heads if I can’t see what the heck I’m doing when I go to extract broken bolts. Any recommendations?

Not a good idea as you won’t be able to know if your drill down the center. It honestly might make it even more difficult.
