ring pliers work good too to get broken taps backed out, you put them in and adjust to the size and have goot leverage to turn it
@moderndaytinkerer7856 жыл бұрын
Junkie, some carbide drills is what you need to drill taps, also I would run the drill in low gear, to allow the chip to remove the heat and by not spinning the drill bit so fast, it keeps the material from work hardening. Thanks for the video!
@greenfeilds...15 жыл бұрын
You need a good quality carbide burr and a dremel to drill into that tap material. They also make extractors that slide arms down the flutes of the broken taps and you can spin it out if you are lucky

Great video! Love your videos. If the tap was loose from the punch and chisel step, could I get away with using a cut off wheel to grind a slot into the broken tap so that I could get a flat head screw driver on it? Is the cut off wheel too soft to make a slot in the broken tap?
@gt500knights6 жыл бұрын
In some cases if you have access to an oxyacetalyne torch, you can heat the tap up enough to make it molten and then blow it out. This can take great skill, however, as you wouldnt want to melt any surrounding materials. If blowing out molten metal, make sure nothing flammable is around!!! This method has worked several times for me.

If you look at side of extractor it tells you what size to drill the bolt with. So you don't have to guess.

Hey junkie. Have a steady hand with a torch and a smallest tip on the torch. Blow the centre out of the tap and pick the pieces out. Done it a few times. Have your drinks at night for a steady hand. Done some small taps twice. Give her a try sometime.

Thanks for this series of videos regarding taps and extractors. Where can i get those tap sockets from, Mcmaster Carr??? Oh one more thing put some safety glasses on Man. Metal chips and eyeballs dont mix.
@stever58876 жыл бұрын
SLR326--I don't recall his talking about tap sockets, but I probably just got distracted. Lisle makes two sets of tap sockets; one for more common (i.e., smaller) sizes, which has eight sockets (product #70500). It has four 1/4"-drive sockets and four 3/8-drive sockets. The other set is for bigger taps, and I believe has four sockets (I don't have that one). Both are available on Amazon, and probably many others online. My set was U.S.-made, purchased about four years ago.

Great video on removal of broken shit.Have you ever used wax to remove bolts? I realize it's rare to encounter a rusted bolt that will not budge, but here's a trick in case you do: Heat the area around the bolt with a torch, and touch a candle to the threads. The wax will be sucked into the opening around the threads, and the bolt can be removed easily. The heating and candle application may have to be repeated a couple times. This works on the same principle as "sweat-soldering" copper pipes, and will work where penetrating oil will not. (Always use care when and where you apply heat) Try this on your next stuck bolt. You'll be amazed.
@stever58876 жыл бұрын
Jerm C--I saw that on a KZbin video about 8 months ago; it is amazing how easily the bolts become loose and back right out. That trick is especially useful on automobile lug nuts that have rusted in place. Having a piece of wax to rub on drywall screws while you're driving them into hardwood with a drill makes that job easier, too.

I wouldn't say Irwin is crap. Look at all you snap on stuff and then check out Irwin. It's all rebranded Irwin dude. All taps are hardened steel and should break if you hit it with a hammer. The correct way to remove a tap is with a walten tap extracted kit.
@JUSTINSTURGILLTRUCKING7 жыл бұрын
Matt Perske I didn't even hit them with a hammer at the thing hit my leg and broke I think it was a little bit different than the ones that snap on so that might be a different grade but I'm gonna check out those tat remover's and will try those
@stever58876 жыл бұрын
Justin--Matt Perske was talking about Walton Tap Extractors (not walten). I've not used them myself, but check out Tubal Cain's videos here on KZbin; he's an oldtime machinist. The Waltons are available individually and in sets (not cheap, but not overly expensive). The extractor "fingers" have a habit of bending and/or breaking if they meet resistance, so they're not foolproof. Your center punch trick is a more reliable method, and the propane torch helps out with stuck/epoxied fasteners. The center punch also works on bolts when they've broken off level or inside the threaded hole. Another kit to try is Ridgid's Screw Extractors Set No. 10, which some people swear by; it permits you to more easily drill a hole in the center of the fastener or tap. This set is also available from Snap-on as the Blue Point E1020 Extractor Set. In a pinch, a pair of really fine-jawed needle nose pliers could be pressed into service to back out the tap, again using heat
@mmikee4076 жыл бұрын
How about welding a bolt or the like to the broken end of a tap and then it would be so easy to back it out using the most basic set of pliers not even the Knipex cobra or a wrench…etc. Provided that someone have the gears required for welding and if welding is feasible and can be done safely and away from inflammable stuff.

Use the rescue bit: rescuebit.com/ You'll be able to drill into the tap, broken drill bits or any hardened steel without sweating. It's a little pricey (around $70 bucks) but it works. You won't need anything else but your cordless drill...you won't need to put any pressure and the rescue bit will pulverize the broken tap or drill bit with no problem. You'll save a lot of money and no need a mill or send the part to the shop.

Taps are hardened which makes them brittle so they shatter if you hit them with punches
@stever58876 жыл бұрын
Anthony--Yes, they are brittle, but if you noticed, he was hitting them with short strokes of his hammer. They did not break, but turned a bit with each strike, which eventually loosened them enough to be removed. You can shatter them if they're hit hard enough, which might be the plan if you can't get them to turn at all. At that point, you'd want to be wearing a face shield to protect your face and eyes from the shards of metal being thrown up at you.

Why didn't you clamp it under your drill press? Ha ha Justin, don't want to say "Knipex" because you don't want to hear it from the pronunciation Nazis, then you say "grinded off". {:-) If anyone gives you shit, point them at the dictionary, to my surprise "grinded" is a word although the dictionary does say its use is "rare". Most people would say "ground off". The one that is like nails on a chalkboard to me is when people say "orientated". Its ORIENTED. Oh, you don't HAVE a drill press? That's a must-get item.

I'll make a suggestion to you, stop cussing so much. I enjoyed the video. I think you have some good ideas to offer people and could get more likes. But, using profanity like you do does not make you seem intelligent. I tell my kids there are two reasons most people use profanity: 1-an emotional outburst due to pain or anger 2-because they don't have an intelligent word to use in place of the profanity (probably the only reason). You seem pretty capable of finding a more intelligent word every other sentence than fuck. I'm not an uptight person. But, when I can't listen to the video without headphones because my kids may hear, that's bad. Keep making the good and get rid of the bad. Thnx pal.
