Excellent video. I want add to my solution to correcting the surging idle on my 2011 Troy-Bilt Storm 2410 snow blower which has existed since I purchased it new from Lowe's in Nov '10. The engine is the same 179cc "early" version that Brad addresses in this video. My snow blower has always been stored indoors and properly winterized each Spring, but has had a "surging" idle since new. The engine starts easily, and runs fine under load (with partial choke). I have simply tolerated the surging idle until I ran across several KZbin videos addressing idle surge in the Troy-Bilt Storm 2410. After watching a couple of videos suggesting that a clogged idle jet will cause this issue, I decided to investigate. Following Brad's video for disassembly of the engine control shroud, and especially removal of the elusive lower starter switch screw to release the RH corner of the shroud, I gained access to the carburetor Idle Stop Adjusting Screw, and the Idle Jet Assembly without having to fully remove the carburetor. Sure enough, the air bleed hole in the idle jet was plugged -- not with varnish or debris, but rather with BRASS -- the idle jet was faulty from the factory! Based on other videos which cautioned against enlarging the hole diameter more than .040", I used a #64 (.036") drill bit remove the brass in the center of this jet which I believe missed its component production "drill" process during manufacturing in China -- undoubtedly along with several hundred other jets in the same "batch". After reattaching the carburetor shroud and exhaust heat shield, I fired the engine up and was treated to the pleasant sound of an idle that was smoother than a baby's bottom! AND, it only took me 13+ years to figure out the cause, and get it corrected -- we get so-o-o-o-o schmart, so-o-o-o late!! 🤔🥶😠

I've got one too, going on 12+years of use. These are so simple to repair. Only major repair so far is the friction wheel and wheel plate, since I screwed it up. If you hear "squealing" while you're blowing, it maybe metal to metal on the plate. Check and replace, simple job. I'm 81 and if I can do it, anybody can do it.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, there is a side mount bolt on the carburetor bowl you should be able to access to drain the fuel from the carburetor. Not having a fuel shut off is not good. You may also try alternative fuel that you can purchase at the big box stores. Tru-Fuel. trufuel50.com/4-cycle-mix/. OR what I am now using Aspen Fuel. www.aspenfuels.us/. It is far superior to pump gas and you will not have the issues with gas going bad while storing your machine but do not mix the two (gas station gas with true fuel or aspen) You will not get the benefits from using the better fuel.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
When you move the throttle from slow speed to high Speed the engine should sound different. If it stays the same , you may have the idle screw in to far or it sounds like you may have installed the carburetor incorrectly but without seeing or hearing it, to tough to diagnose.

I want some of those forked pry sticks but where do you buy them? Dirty fuel messed up the fuel maker I believe as the machine come with no fuel filter and no tank screen neither. What do you do to stop the surging of the engine and how do you increase the rpm, as mine is not fast enough.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, The carburetor will need to be rebuild or replaced to stop the surging. (the surging came from gas going bad inside the carburetor from sitting for a long period of time without being used). The engine speed should not exceed 3600 rpms and you will need a tool (tachometer) to find out what the speed is. Here is a video on how to rebuild the carburetor kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ_KfGmia8R9bck. and below the video in the description there are links to help you out. @JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
The engine speed should be between 3400 and 3600 rpm’s. I do not have a video on raising the engine speed because normally they never need that adjustment. Your not going to see better performance from raising the engine speed unless you have a huge difference in rpm’s. To help your machine perform better, you need to make sure the auger belt is correctly tensioned and spray silicone in and around the chute/auger and exhaust chute. If all is working correctly, then your machine is operating as it should.

This is an excellent video! These engines are made of inferior metals. It is not worth the effort to rebuild one. After rebuilding a 179cc, Chinese manufactured, engine for a 2410 storm, I am shocked at the lack of quality. The aluminum is too soft. The smaller bolts are very brittle. These engines may last a while. However, they are liable to break a rod, sooner than a person can afford.

Thank you so much for this video. My machine still wont kick on. I changed the carburetor, spark plug, oil, put in ethanol free gas and still wont start even when trying with the electric start. Can anyone please HELP

The next step is to check Ignition/spark. Check spark by using a inline spark tester if you can get one. If you do not have ignition, you will need to replace coil or find the reason why the coil is not igniting. If you have spark/ignition, next would be checking compression and unless you have a compression tester it may be a little tricky. When you pull the pull rope slow you must feel resistance at some point. If the pull rope comes out slowly with no resistance you may have no compression. It should feel easy then harder then easy. Only when you pull the rope slowly. If you haver no compression you will need to take it to a small engine mechanic or someone that could look into it a little further.

@Johnson's Small Engines thank you I truly appreciate it. I got it to start after half hour of pulling on cored and electric starting. I got it to start but shuts off after 10-15 seconds. I bought my carburetor from Amazon. Should I invest in a troy built carburetor?

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Successfully swapped out the carb today. Your video was very helpful. Throttle plate was seized, varnished up and corroded...glad I decided to replace it instead of trying to rebuild it......had to pull the fitting out of the bottom of the fuel tank. The screen was completely varnished up and clogged. I didn't get a drop of fuel out of the line when i disconnected it from the carb. Added fresh fuel and two pulls later it started right up ! ! ! ! ! Thanks again ! ! ! ! !

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines It was a neighbors machine......I recommended they throw out their old gas cans and get a new one and gave them some Sta-Bil so they wouldn't have this problem again
