I tried the app for the first time a few weeks ago and can't believe how well it works. Even the crap recordings I made 20 years ago on mini-disc in an attic somehow manages to separate everything! However, I found that completely taking an instrument out does cause a bit of compression and gating issues. I take the drums down to about 25%, just enough where you can't hear them over my playing, but not enough where it causing sound issues with the rest of the mix, and that seems to work great! Fantastic app! Well worth the money!

I'm using this app now. Paid for it. Honestly it all depends on how the song was recorded. If everything is in stereo in the final product, when you turn down the drums it distorts everything making the tracks muddy.

That's what I assumed, just like trying to filter it out in Cakewalk or Cubase. The more you remove, the muddier it gets, then you have to add upper mid layers etc. Clearly this app makes that process easier but you have less control over it because it's their own algorithm. All that said though, it really does a good job, considering how much fusing around it takes to get it marginally better by doing it yourself.

As I suspected, thanks for the honest review. Remember, Cobus is merely a salesman here, I'm glad that the begging for new equipment following COVID part is over tho. To be clear: perfectly separating the mixed tracks is *mathematically impossible* to begin with. Knowing how tracks are mixed and the frequency range of the instruments we can make "so-so" approximations (and also taking advantage of the fact that vocals are mixed in the middle in stereo, allowing us to keep only the difference between the channels), and the app might help there. But: a snare drum hit, or most of the spectrum of the cymbals is plain white noise - that is, it is spread across the whole spectrum from the bass guitar through vocals, guitars, keyboards till the ambience. Erasing that from the spectrum will inevitably damage the sonic quality of all of these before. And lossy compression just makes all of these much worse - all of those, previously mostly unheard artifacts suddenly became absolutely noticeable, making the weird phaser/flanger like result of the vocal removal much much worse. Not sitting with a proper speaker atm, but it felt like that removing the drums removes most of the bass guitar as well in Cubus's example? As a drummer, honestly the only thing I need to hear in order to "click" with the band is the bass guitar... Couldnt care less about this app, and actually I am fine if there is a drumless version of a song available, but usually I just practice over the original version...

Got this app the other week. Paid a years subscription for the pro version literally 20 minutes after playing with it. If anyone plays in cover bands, or even just wanting to start transcribing this app is honestly amazing and invaluable for time saving. Great for dropping everything out to work on vocal harmonies too.

I tried it out and this also works great for cleaning up vocal bleed too! My church has been recording music for months and I've had a lot of trouble with my drums bleeding into the vocal mics from the beginning. Really cool to learn covering songs and cover it then ! :D I still see that for some song there is lot distortion when removing totaly one line (for example the drum or keeping only the drum). A tip for everyone : don't "mute" other lines if you wanna hear the drum, just lower the other line to hear better the drum part ! if you wanna cover, don't mute the drum totally, just lower it to have less distortion :) So you don't get distortion and enjoy your favorite music ! But really great job Moises ! thx

Using the free version means you can't use the option to keep higher frequencies when removing a part. With that on, the other parts pretty much sound exactly the same when removing another part, like his does in this video.

I don't even think there was a lot of manual labor involved. They probably had to feed the recursive learning algorithm the isolated tracks of a lot of different songs and tell it "this is drums, this is guitar" and so on. It's really fascinating the solutions that AI comes up with.

Hey Cobus, have you ever checked out iZotope RX 7? It has a 'music rebalance' feature that allows you to raise and lower certain elements of the mix. You can't really outright remove the drums but you can certainly lower their presence without affecting the rest of the mix too much. Obviously it's not perfect but it's the best I've heard from any software that does this sort of thing.

It’s basically flipping the phase of the instruments you select. People have been doing this for a while now. But it required much more work because you had to find the stems for the song and then line it up to the song and flip the phase of the stems and the audio would “disappear.” If you listen you can hear the phasing effect when he takes out different elements if the mix.
