How to Remove Fall Webworms from Your Trees without Chemicals!

How to easily and safely remove fall webworms from trees without chemicals. Removing fall webworms (tent caterpillars) can be done effectively by using a pole or stick to remove them. This of course only works if you can reach them in the trees so the longer the pole the better! Web worms are not a significant issue for the health of the trees since the webworms emerge in fall and by then the trees have already absorbed most of the energy they need for the winter. They can be unsightly and you may want to remove them from smaller trees.

Your way is the best way to get rid of them. Good lesson! Back in the late 70s we had a bad outbreak of these pests where I use to live in Indiana , they had all the trees covered in silk,it was a nightmare.Caterpillers were crawling all over the the ground,houses, everywhere, it was hundreds of them. I remember everyone on the block were racking up webworms in big piles and setting them on fire with gas or lighter fluid.

i like that method best had 3 webs on my best pecan tree they were near the end of limbs so ijust cut off about 2-3 ft and dumped in trash can next time i will use the long stick then take my propane torch and barbrcue them

On our large trees away from the home the Ants do a good job of marching the silk worms out of the trees.

Web worms eat a tree's leaves and that leads to dead branches and dead trees if the trees are infested. Especially bad on my Sour Woods and Pecan trees. I can reaches about 20' high but the bigger webs are higher. Is there some kind of treatment to put around base of trees to protect them?

I have read but not tried this but you can wrap a barrier of tin foil then cover it with petroleum oil. Supposedly the worms won't cross the petroleum.

they usually come in the fall the leaves are going to fall soon any way i dont think they damage the tree if its a small limb just cut it it will grow back in the spring

What if their atleast 25' or higher up in the tree?........Is a DISH SOAP solution worth the effort?

you can use a long cane pole or a piece of 3/4 in pvc pipe with a long stick to reach up 20 ft that pipe comes in 10 ft sections its not very heavy

Here in Oklahoma a standard high pressure water hose works. They are easy to drown.

can I ask, if they're nothing to worry about for the trees, why destroy them? will they stay over winter and start to damage in the spring?

It's mostly cosmetic. People don't like to see the leaves diminished off of the trees. In my garden if I can reach it I'll remove them but if they are high up I mostly don't worry about them. Sometimes I try to at least puncture the nest so I can open it up for the birds to eat.
