If you’ve found tree or shrub branches wrapped with a thick layer of webbing, you’re likely dealing with Fall Webworms. These pests will consume leaves and their webs can strangle new growth, creating visually unappealing blemishes and adding additional stressors to plants that may not have the best health.
Fall webworm caterpillars reach a length of about 1 inch when fully mature. They have pale green to yellow bodies with two rows of black markings across their backs and are covered in long, white hairs. Depending on the species, their head capsules can be red or black.
Once these fuzzy caterpillars reach maturity, they’ll pupate into moths. These adult fall webworm moths are white and have a wingspan of one to one and a half inches. Some moths have small, dark spots on their wings.
When you first notice signs of fall webworms, you’re likely to find the ends of tree or bush branches wrapped in layers of webbing. Among the webbing, you’ll find numerous caterpillars and droppings.
When inspecting for fall webworms, be careful not to confuse them for similar pests: Eastern tent caterpillars. While these two pests behave similarly, they are distinct from one another and may require different approaches to treatment.
Keep in mind fall webworms create webbing along the ends of tree and bush branches. Eastern tent caterpillars, on the other hand, create webbing where the tree branches meet tree trunks. Also note that you will see Eastern tent caterpillars during the spring, while fall webworms are active during summer and fall.
To treat fall webworms on your property, use an insecticide like Supreme IT. Supreme I/T is a bifenthrin-based liquid insecticide concentrate that is labeled to treat over 70 different pests. When applied, Supreme I/T will leave a residual chemical barrier that will control pests for up to 90 days after application. This product is a liquid concentrate, so it will need to be mixed with water before application. To cover large treatment areas and higher tree canopies, we recommend you apply this product with the Solutions Hose End Sprayer. Apply the product’s labeled rate of 0.125 to 0.25 fluid ounces of product per 1,000 square feet of treatment area. Use the higher rate for heavy infestations.
Do not apply the solution to any plants grown for consumption. Wait until treated plants are completely dry before any irrigation can occur and before allowing people or pets to come in the area.
Once you’ve treated for fall webworms and the area has dried, remove their webs. Prune away any branches with webbing and any other parts that appear discolored or damaged.
Properly watering ornamentals, shrubs, and young trees is a great way to encourage health and resist any damage fall webworms can cause. For newly planted or established trees that are 1 to 8 inches in trunk diameter and the branches are 25 inches off the ground, we recommend 1 or 2 tree watering bags. The Solutions Tree Watering Bag is a slow-release watering bag designed to deliver 8-10 hours of continuous watering with up to 20 gallons of irrigation. Simply install one Solutions Tree Watering Bag around trees with a diameter of up to 3 inches. Zip 2 of the bags together for trees 4 to 8 inches in diameter. Wrap the bag around the tree trunk with the tag facing outward and zip the ends together from bottom to top. Lift the tag, insert a hose into the opening, and begin filling with water. Fill the bag to 1/4 capacity, and it will release water slowly over time. Most trees will need to be watered once a week.
Finally, keep up with regular applications of Supreme IT. Supreme IT lasts for up to 90 days, so one application every 3 months will provide year-round protection against fall webworms and over 70 other pests.
