This video is for those who are doing or want to do a fuel pump replacement and are looking for a easy way to remove the fuel pump retention ring. the tool i'm using in the video is a OEM tools 25156 which makes it really easy. some people have used a hammer and chisel, screwdriver, pipe wrench etc but this tool makes it easy

Also if you have a ring that's had the ribs broken off by previous persons who did pump removal and you have tried liquid wrench lubricant waited a day then tried strap wrench without success, you can just use a small jig saw blade stuck or screwed into a small file wood handle. Cut the ring starting at top edge as deep as you can without damaging tank neck threads, then hit it with hammer and chisel, the ring will split and come off. Of course you should have located and purchased a new ring. When you install the new pump put some silicon dielectric grease on the threads of the ring and only tighten amt needed, don't over-tighten, the rubber seal at top is pressed down tight sealing off before the nut is tightened as tight as it can get.

Little trick that has always worked for me I take a plastic feeling wedge or something that wont beat the crap out of the plastic hold.it against the ribs on the ring and tap it off with a hammer

I dropped my tank yesterday to fix the gas overflow issue. For those who don't know, the fuel pump lock ring changed for the 05-06 Wranglers. Those ones use a metal ring that sits more flush to the tank. There's another universal tool to also remove that type of ring. However, I opted for the mallet + chisel method. It got the job done, but definitely not ideal. The Mopar part number for the lockring tool is 9340. It's a universal design though and Amazon ones can be found in the $20-30 range.

I bought this tool, because of this video. Seemed far easier than everything else I've tried Tried it on my '99 F250 Super Duty's tank. The outer drop bars are slid out as far as they will possibly go, and tightened down, but I Still have to tap it onto the ring- which is still bigger than the span of the tool. When Iput my breaker bar on & begin to urn the tool, it Pops Off! I'd rather not cut the ring off & get a new one, but I'm leaning that way.

There is tools that are bigger, most have the specs so you can see if it will work for you

My problem is getting the little clips on the side off to even start taking the ring off, they are stuck on to it it seems but i dont want to break them, any ideas?

i usually blow it off with shop air then pb blast soak n hit it with the torch to loosen the plastic

What do you do if did won't loosen up? I've got the tool, even with help can't loosen. Also had a 3rd person with a screwdriver and hammer tap on the ring while using the tool ,it won't budge. 🤷. Cut the ring?

Use a blow torch.

Isn’t that the truth...buy the right tool for the job!!!! I had a complete bro breakdown after doing the entire job and after using a screwdriver the entire pump moved on me and the damn float moved giving me a fuel level reading that was wrong until you got to below a half tank. To say I was pissed to drop the tank again is an understatement!!!!!

20 yrs used nothing more than a very large flat screwdriver and a 2lb hammer, tap it gently and evenly working your way all around and its off in 30 seconds
