Fuel pump lock ring replacement. Same for Tahoe Suburban Silverado Avalanche.
Things that might help with a project like this:

AC Delco Tahoe Fuel Pump: amzn.to/2EfCr23
Brass Punch Set: amzn.to/2rvUKrZ

I'm in NE & my '05 Yukon XL is an '05 from out innthe country in SD. So much dirt & gravel innthat recessed pump area just holds moisture in contact with it & mine actually looks worse than yours. I'm still trying to remove the pump & will be replacing the fittings attaching the lines into the pump as even after two days of soaking regularly with PB Blaster & warm weather both lines broke off inside the fitting. Now I'm just hoping I can remove the ring & save me the cost of replacing the tank. Boy, the timing for this is really poor for my family. Thanks for the encouraging video.

I've got a 2001 Silverado, it's a California truck and I live in Arizona so the lock ring has never had to be replaced, but to get it loose I used a BIG pair of Craftsman channel lock pliers. ;-)

I see that the fuel pump was still working, but all that struggle only to get the new lock ring out? I would replace the fuel-pump while in there just as preventive maintenance. I did it just last weekend on my 01 Tahoe and my lock-ring was badly rusted too. I spent about 45minutes hitting it from several spots until it came loose. I was almost prepared to order a new gas tank, lol. But fortunately the holding tabs were in good shape and no damage was caused to the tank.

Nice job. That lock ring was a tough nut! As to what you said about how these days replacement parts are dicey, I totally agree. Even good names! It's obvious that buying parts on eBay is going to get you chinese junk. But now, Amazon also has lots of counterfeit parts being sold in OEM looking boxes. Many people don't believe that about Amazon, but you can rest assured that Amazon does not thoroughly vet all their 3rd party sellers. Not as bad as eBay, but they can't be trusted either. I have 4 vehicles at my house, from 1994 up to 2006, Buick, Ford, and Chevy, with 75k up to 145k miles, and all of them are still runnng on the original fuel pumps. I have now procured replacement fuel pumps for them all from Rockauto, but as you said, I'm not going to take out the originals until they bite the dust. Any replacment , even GM Genuine and Delphi, will not be as good as the originals.

Hope the pump does not die in a week after you get it back in . I cut a access hole in the floor my astro / safari van to replace fuel pump . a few rivets, seal it up job done fast .No tank removal . makes changing pump a lot less work ? Good job .

Did the same thing with the S10 and years later it's still working. With new brake lines, front brakes, fuel neck, wheel bearings, master cylinder, battery, blower motor resistor you have to draw the line at some point. I think it's getting close to $1000 in parts.

Another option to get at fuel tank is to remove box bolts on driver’s side and loosen on passenger. Then tip box up and support with 2x4. No need for tank removal. Worked well. I had to beat my locking ring into submission...😁

Bad design. That valley keeps all the sand and salt in there. Not sure why you did not replace the pump assy while you had it out. Both my escalade and tahoe had fuel pump fail. Replaced the rings too. Delphi pumps have been good to me.

When the pump fails I will replace it. Did the same thing on the S10. Left the old fuel pump and it's still running. With the lift and a new lock ring, dropping the tank to replace a pump won't be a problem. Plus saved some money not buying a pump. With new brake lines, front brakes, fuel neck, wheel bearings, master cylinder, battery, blower motor resistor you have to draw the line at some point. I think it's getting close to $1000 in parts.

I know this is off subject but I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 RWD with a 1.5 leveling kit. I was thinking of putting custom wheels on there, I seen your 2000 you had. You put 20 x 9 rims on yours with 275/55/20. I was wondering if there is any way I could run a 20 x 10 with a smaller tire on my truck without having to cut or trim out the fender well?
@mossman381
@mossman381 5 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say what combo will fit when you change rim size. That usually changes offset. A smaller tire will help fit your fender but then you get a small sidewall. I don't like the small sidewall look. Any reason you want a 10"? The 20x9 is a great size for those trucks.
@tuckergarland9066
@tuckergarland9066 5 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks. The reason I was wanting 10’s were just so that they would stick out farther
@mossman381
@mossman381 5 жыл бұрын
The farther they stick out the more chance you have with hitting the fenders. And they throw stuff all over your truck. Pretty much say goodbye to ever having a clean truck unless you get a drought.

While you did a great job, my lock ring is in way worse shape than yours, and I don't know what to do. The outside tabs are gone, and my first attempt with a hammer resulted in chunks of the lock ring coming off. Not sure what to do. A new gas tank is almost $600. It's welded in place.

@@mossman381 actually, I have repaired these tanks using a new lock ring and drilling about six poles equally spaced around the outside perimeter, and then installing self tapping screws through the lock ring into the tank. It gets a good seal using the original rubber O-ring gasket that comes with the new fuel pump if somebody’s replacing the pump and then you can order the new nylon fuel line kit as well because if your ring is that Rusty your fuel lines are as well. I’m going to have a how to video on my channel coming soon on the same exact procedure as I am doing it on my project Escalade truck. GMT 400 platform.

Can’t you cause a fire using a vacuum like that?
@mossman381
@mossman381 10 ай бұрын
I can't say I have heard about that but if you sucked up a lot of fuel vapor, I could see that being a problem. When you are dealing with fuel you have to be very careful. I think I said that in the video. Fuel is highly flammable, and most people find that out after starting a fire. Please be careful if you are attempting this job. I would recommend having a professional do this job.

i dont think this is easier than a pickup. you actually have to drop the tank here. a pickup you just drop the bed bolts and slide the whole bed back to expose the fuel pump.
@mossman381
@mossman381 3 жыл бұрын
I guess that depends on the condition of your truck. If you have a rusty bed and rusty bed mounts it won't be so easy to unbolt the bed. And get the bed bolted back down.

Just did another one on a 2005 Silverado. Same problem with rust. I suppose they could have used all plastic pieces that screw on but you never know if they would have had issues with that too. It's easy to sit back and say something wasn't a good idea. They have to balance cost and quality.
