I've got a vintage E.T. from 1982 with a moldy smell. Sadly the seller did not list that in his listing . I'm going to try this method to remove the smell! Hoping it works . Thanks for sharing !

I hope so! It worked really well for me. I find that a lot of second hand plush can have a mold problem. I think the key ingredient that helped was the stain remover. Good luck!

You’re welcome! I have such a deep rooted hatred for the smell of mold. This method is really the only thing I’ve found that works on plush and colored clothing. For whites, straight up bleach does the trick! 😂

@@SadieP my only question is best way to dry fast? The weathers been a little on and off and I don’t have a tumble dryer :/ I’m worried if I leave them a little damp it will become unhygienic again

​@@crimsonrosella8596I've had this same issue. Doesn't matter if I hand wash my plush or put it in the washer. After I think they're dry, I put them in a poly mailer.. then a month later, they wind up being moldy. :'(

I have this one bunny plushie and I washed it in the washing machine but in the middle of it (it wasn't damaging him or anything, we just decided to take him out) we took him out and decided to do it by hand he took at least 2 days to dry and now he smells moldy and even has some small stains on it that I assume are also mold he's not fluffy/furry so I'm even scared to put him through something again, can anyone tell me if this process is okay to do with older plushies? Also, is there a better way to dry them off or do we always have to hang them to dry?

You can use a hairdryer but be careful not to get too close or burn them. I like to use my hand as a guide, if it doesn’t burn me it won’t burn the plushie. A sunny day is also very good for drying plush. If it’s too large, it might be best to unstuff and then only wash the outside.

@@SadieP Ohhh I see, thanks! Unfortunately I really think I shouldn't have washed him, it's like he's very dry now and smells kinda moldy. Poor little guy...I even checked his tag to see if it was okay and it said it could be washed in the washing machine... Maybe I'll try to leave him in the sun a bit to see if the mold gets better, but next time I wash a plushie I'll make sure to dry them up a little bit with a hairdryer

​@@noctovania sunlight naturally kills mold, so maybe drying the doll outside in the sunlight so there's lots of sun and air circulation will help. Maybe do that after drying the surface with a hairdryer

A way I've dried upholstery is by putting some baking soda down on it, waiting 20 minutes, and then vacuuming it up. Baking soda soaks up liquids quite well. Just be careful with the vacuum if you do that. If you find it leaves baking soda behind, at least you can just do another wash to get it out and try again.

Have you thought of getting a real puppy? I have 2 dogs and they bring me so much happiness. I have PTSD and they have helped me so much. I was just thinking that since you are home a lot, you would have time for a puppy. And you could make videos of it growing up. I don't know, just an idea. 😊 check out the video of my pomeranian. He is so funny.
