I am a homeowner pretty handy Electrician by trade, but my pavers were installed with poly sand and now I have to power wash and reinstall poly sand or an alternative. can I use just a plain sand or dose it have to be a special sand. If I do use the poly sand do I have to remove all the old poly sand from the joint?

You could use jointing sand. It is a little different than other sands in that the grains are more angular. You need at least 1 to 1.5" of depth to install new sand, but check with the manufacturer because it does differ.
