Every painter gets runs sometimes. This video shows how to remove runs from the clear coat using a simple razor blade. It's important to slice the top of the runs off before sanding and polishing. Also a hard block is needed with an aggressive sand paper such as 600. Be careful you don't go down too deep. I used a guide coat to guage how far I sanded down for each grit.

Great video Tom, another method is to wrap masking tape at either end of the razor blade, stops it digging in. Worth a try mate.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto only need to have 1-2 layers so it doesn't dig in on the corners mate.

So scary to scrape out runs..I just leave them for the experts to notice. Really winds some people up. I’ve got a car that we painted in 1991, and it still has the runs from them. Excellent info as usual!

I started in the trunk area because I wasn't sure what would happen. It wasn't too bad, but I was very careful too. A pro could have fixed it in probably 30 minutes, ha ha. The car has a few drops really low on the rocker, but otherwise it's pretty clean. A few dust nibs here and there.

Well done. Nice strategy. It is a bit of an art to perfect a painted surface. As you demonstrated, if you use some common sense, and apply a dose of patience, results like you achieved can be the result. Thanks for running through the steps you took. 👍

One can also use a razor scraper to remove flaking clear coat on newer cars...just did it on an 07 Accent where the clear coat was flaking/peeling on non metal surfaces; e.g....mirrors, door handles, spoiler, etc. Real easy on flat surfaces...a little harder on curved parts...but doable.

Good to know. Can you re-clear after? I sold an Acura because the clear was failing.

Try using a sharpie marker over the runs..... block sand till the sharpie marks are gone, done.
@GarageTimeAutoResto

Yep, that would work. Similar to guide coat.

Another method is to use a piece of a tin file. Or put some fine putty over the runs, than you can blocksand the runs with 600 to 800 grit. And finish with 2000 wetsand

I would highly recommend Griot’s Garage Fast Correcting Cream for compounding and Sonax Perfect Finish for polishing! GG Perfecting Cream is pretty good as well. Chemical Guys’ compounds and polishes are less than stellar in my experience. Also, I have a paint thickness gauge if you would like to borrow it to reference how much clear coat you’re removing, I’m pretty close!

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation. You are welcome to come check it out anytime. I'd like to try the paint guage too.
